Course Aim:To enable people to develop an

understanding of disability that is based on the Social Model of Disability and to identify areas within their community, organization, venue, etc. that could be changed to promote the participation of people with disabilities.

Objectives:To realize and recognize famous people who

have a disability;To identify language which is offensive to

persons with disabilities and use more acceptable terms;

To begin to question and challenge attitudes and levels of awareness regarding disability;

To critically examine the Medical Model and introduce the Social Model of Disability.

Famous People (20 min)Facilitators provide a list of famous people

(PowerPoint);Participants work in pairs;Each pair discusses if the famous people they

are given have a disability and what kind of disability they have;

Each pair shares what they discuss to othersFacilitators wrap up the session.

Word Power (20 min)Participants work in pairs;Each pair will be given a word to discuss

whether it has a negative/positive /neutral meaning/image;

Each group presents their discussion;Let participants give feedback;Facilitators wrap up the session

Attitudes and Awareness (20 min)Divide the participants into groups of 3-4;Facilitators give a group a message

regarding beliefs/prejudices/misperception on disability to discuss if they agree with the message or not and why;

Each group sends a representative to report their discussion;

Facilitators wrap up the session (PowerPoint).

Medical Model and Social Model of Disability (30 min)Facilitators present the concepts of medical

model and social model of disability (PowerPoint);

Divide participants into groups of 3-4;Each group will be given a medical-model

sentence to discuss and later change it to a social-model one (markers and flip charts);

Each group presents their sentence;Facilitators wrap up the session.

Summary 1. To be famous people, Self determination and clear goal setting are key factors whether who you are , person with or without disability;2. Language carries intent how we think about people or things is reflected in language that we use and this translated into action;3. There is a huge different between attaching a label to another person and choosing how to describe and mane oneself because one action disempowers , the other empowers;4. Attitude is a root of barriers;5. Awareness toward Disability rights is very helpful to society to rethink about social services that they should realize to their qualities , their choices and their contribution to human resource development and view persons with disabilities as consumers rather than recipients.;6. Social Model encourages everyone to review their attitude and understanding to disability and to address what changes they might make towards overcoming the barrier that exclude persons with disabilities form full participation in society.

Why we have to do DET at ESCAP ?

United Nations Inter-Agency Support Group for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (IASG) established to support the implementation of The UN Convention ( kindly see next 2 slides), regarding to this, DPI/AP along with Social Development Division (SDD),UNESCAP set up inter working on the implementation of CRPD in ESCAP body.

There are 2 majors components as ;1. Attitude and Awareness by Disability Equality Training (DET);2. Improvement physically barriers by Accessibility audit.

Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Implementation within United Nations: Inter-agency Support Group

United Nations Inter-Agency Support Group for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (IASG) established.

First meeting was held in December 2007 Through the IASG, the United Nations will support the States

parties, based within a framework of coordinated planning and action.

The IASG will ensure that the programmes and policies of the United Nations are inclusive of persons with disabilities, and will work to strengthen recognition of and respect for the principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Membership of the IASG: United Nations departments, regional commissions, agencies, funds and programmes whose work is relevant to the Convention.
