SCRIPTURE REFLECTION

Today we celebrate the “Feast of God.” The Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of our Catholic faith. Our readings today talk to us about this first amazing mystery. That our God is a communion of three divine persons in lovethe Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God created us and loves us as our Father. That’s what Moses is talking about in our first reading today. God is also the Son who came into our world to share his life with us. That’s what Jesus is talking about in our Gospel passage for today. And God is the Holy Spirit who gives us new life as children of God and causes the Trinity to dwell in our hearts. That’s what St. Paul is telling us in our second reading today.

These beautiful readings today show us the beautiful truth of our faith, the Holy Trinity. One way to think about it is that we all make the Sign of the Cross every time we pray. Christians have been doing that since the time of the apostles. So what are we really doing when we make that sign? We’re expressing our faith in the Trinity and our faith that the Trinity was revealed by Jesus on his Cross. We touch our head and we say, “In the name of the Father.” Because he is the first person of the Trinity and our Creator. Then we touch our hearts and we say, “and of the Son.” This reminds us that God the Son proceeds from the Father and came down from heaven to the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Then we touch our shoulders, moving from left to right as we say, “and of the Holy Spirit.” We do this because God the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son; and in his love, the Spirit fills us, body and soul, with the life of God.

Another way to think about the Trinity is the way that St. John described it in one of his letters. He said very simply, “God is Love.” The theologians and saints have helped us to see, that in his innermost heartGod is a communion of three divine Persons in love. Remember, the human person is created in the image of God. That means that you and meevery one of usare created in the image of the Most Holy Trinity. In the image of the God who is Love. So the Trinity tells us the meaning of our lives. It tells us that we are made to share in the life of the Blessed Trinity. We are made to live a divine life in this world. As children of God. As temples of the Holy Spirit. This is the basic reality of our Christian

lives. Jesus said that if we love him and keep his commandments, that God will comethe Trinityto make his home within us.

St. Paul wrote that we are the temples of the living God. That’s the truth. God is dwelling in each us by his grace! But are we aware of it? Are we living this truth? So this great feast today challenges us to examine ourselves. This feast calls us to really believe this and to really live with a greater awareness of this beautiful realityof the Blessed Trinity’s presence with us. The last words we hear from Jesus in our Gospel today are: “Behold! I am with you always.” This isn’t just a happy thought. It’s another way of expressing the beautiful spiritual reality of our lives. As we all remember, when Jesus was born, they called him Emmanuel. And as we know, that name means, “God with us.” The mystery of the Trinity means that we have access to Godall the time. No matter where we are, or what we’re doingGod is with us. We can talk to God all day long. Personally. In an intimate conversation. No matter how softly we speak, he still hears us. We can turn to him for help. For inspiration. All the time. It’s so beautiful that we can talk to God as our loving Father. That we can walk with Jesus as our brother. And that we can live by the light and the gifts of their Spirit of love. On this Feast of the Blessed Trinity, let us pray for the grace to deepen our awareness of the Blessed Trinity’s loving presence within our souls.

OUR MONTHLY AFTERNOON OF EUCHARIS-TIC ADORATION will take place this afternoon, Sunday, May 27. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will begin at 1:00 pm, immediately following the 12:00 Noon Mass. Evening prayer begins at 5:00 pm with Benediction. Please consider coming to the Church for some quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. This is a special time for each of us to be lifted up by the real presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. There are many fruits that come from Eucharistic adoration. Please come and join us!

COOKING FOR THE PRIESTS. Many thanks to NANCY and PERRIN HAFT for providing the priests with a delicious dinner two weeks ago. Thanks to PATTY BLUME and THE BLUME FAMILY for providing a delicious meal for the Cathedral priests last Wednesday evening. We are grateful for your kindness.

MASSES FOR MONDAY, MAY 28, MEMORIAL DAY are scheduled for 8:15 am and 10:00 am. Please note that there is no 6:45 am Mass nor a 12:05 pm Mass on Monday, May 28 and the Cathedral will be closed immediately following the 10:00 am Mass for the holiday.

SAINT OF THE WEEK. We celebrate the feast of SAINT JUSTIN THE MARTYR on June 1. Justin, who lived in the second century, had a quest for religious truth, not unlike Saint Augustine, that took him on a path through various philosophies and religions that eventually led him to become a Christian. He had a keen intellect and a desire to find the answers to the questions of his heart and mind. He became the first Christian philosopher and was able to combine the Christian teaching with the best elements of Greek philosophy. Justin desired to help others come to know Jesus Christ and see the truth of his teaching. He is known as the first apologistone who defends in writing the Christian religious against attacks and misunderstandings of the pagans. But one who desires to use the language and ideas of the culture to draw people to see the truth of Christian faith. He was convinced that a welldeveloped presentation of theology would win all thinking persons to Christ for he believed that God himself drew all human beings to himself by planting universal truths in them. He desired to lead the pagans and Jews to Christ by persuasive arguments and Christian philosophy. He gives a beautiful account of the Catholic Mass in his apology written to Emperor Antoninus in the year 155. You can read it in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1345. The basic format and structure of that Mass described by St. Justin in the second century has stayed the same until our own day! Justin was scourged and beheaded under the persecutions of Marcus Aurelius for his allegiance to Jesus Christ and the Christian faith.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WILL NO NOVENA TO OUR MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP on Wednesday evening, May 30 due to the Serra Catholic Graduation. The novena will resume on Wednesday, June 6.

WE WELCOME SERRA CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL to the Cathedral as it will conduct its graduation ceremony this Wednesday evening, May 30 at 7:00 pm. We congratulate all the graduating seniors of those two schools and ask God’s abundant blessings on them and their families.

WINE, CHEESE AND THE GOSPEL will next meet this Tuesday evening, May 29. Please note the change in day because Monday, May 28 is Memorial Day. Father Adam Verona will lead the evening. His topic will be “The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Church.” Father Adam will discuss the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the life of our Savior and in the life of His Body, the Church. For centuries Christians have found solace and comfort in the protection and intercession of our Blessed Mother. Father Adam will discuss the development and ultimate meaning of the Dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church concerning Mary and what they mean for the life of the faithful. This event begins at 6:30 pm in the parish social hall with wine, cheese and fellowship, followed by a presentation at 7:00 pm with time for questions until about 8:00 pm. All adults and young adults are welcome to join us for this opportunity to learn more about our Catholic faith.

MONDAY, MAY 28 IS MEMORIAL DAY. It is the day we as Americans honor the memories of the armed forces members who never made it to veteran status because they were killed fighting for their country in wars, police actions, peacekeeping missions or terrorist attacks. We remember the sacrifices of so many brave men and women who fought for the ideals and freedoms that we cherish and which are such blessings to our country and each of us. As Catholics we know that we remember the dead with great hope because of our faith in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the promise of eternal life for all who believe. It is fitting that we pray for all those who died in serving our country and remember them this day, lifting them up before God, praying that they will come to the fullness of life in the Kingdom of God. It is a day, as well, that we pray for our country, and ask God to continue to guide us in the way of peace, justice, life and freedom.

FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTIONS. Friday, June 1 is the first Friday of the month. The first Friday of each month was designated by our Savior Himself as a day to be consecrated to honoring His Sacred Heart. These were the revelations given to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque. As the object of this devotion is to make our Savior Jesus Christ ardently and perfectly loved, and to make reparation for the outrages offered to Him in the past, as well as for those which he daily receives in the Blessed Eucharist…Jesus Christ merits our love at all times, but alas! He is despised and outraged in the Sacrament of His love at all times, and so people should at all times make reparation to Him. We should make every effort to adore Jesus Christ in this august Sacrament, make a fervent act of love to Jesus in the tabernacle, thank Him for having instituted this Mystery of love, express our sorrow at seeing Him so abandoned, and resolve to visit Him as soon as possible and love Him unceasingly. Attendance at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is assuredly the best means of honoring and loving the adorable Heart of Jesus. Also prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, particularly making a holy hour or spending time in prayer during Eucharistic adoration, are great devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

THE PROMISES OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS TO ST. MARGARET MARY ALACOQUE:1. "I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life."2. "I will establish peace in their homes."3. "I will comfort them in their afflictions."4. "I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death."5. "I will bestow a large blessing upon all their undertakings.”6. "Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy."7. "Tepid souls shall grow fervent."8. "Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection."9. "I will bless every place where a picture of My Heart shall be set up and

honored."10."I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts."11."Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in

My Heart, never to be blotted out."12."I promise thee in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My allpowerful

love will grant to all those who communicate on the First Friday in nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving the Sacraments; My Divine heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.”

SAINTS AND STATUES OF THE CATHEDRAL (second in our series). There are statues of four Doctors of the Church on the wall near both side entrances. These statues were executed by Joseph Sibbel in plaster and painted a shade that suggests the color old ivory and they stand high on the pedestal (not easy to get the Lenten shrouds on them!). In the west transept (parking lot side) we have two Latin Doctors: St. Ambrose and St. Jerome. St. Ambrose was the bishop of Milan who is remembered for his courage in fighting the Arian heresy and in defending the Church’s rights against the government. His preaching led to the conversion of St. Augustine. St. Jerome was a biblical scholar who spent thirty years translating the Hebrew and Greek texts of the Old and New Testaments into Latin. His version is known as the Vulgate because he used ordinary not classical Latin. He authored many biblical commentaries and is seen holding the Bible. On the east transept (Craig Street side), we have two Greek Doctors: St. Athanasius and St. Basil. St. Athanasius was the bishop of Alexandria for 46 years and exiled from his diocese by the Arian supporting emperors five times. He is known as the Doctor of the Incarnation for defending the divinity of Jesus and the two natures of Jesus, human and divine, in one person and which he helped become part of the Nicene Creed that we pray every Sunday. He is seen crushing a book labeled Arius. St Basil was the Archbishop of Caesarea and another great force in countering the Arians and other heresies in those first centuries of the Church. He was the founder of Eastern monasticism as well.

IT WILL BE IMPORTANT FOR ALL PARENTS OF SECOND GRADE AND EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS FOR THE UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR (201819) to contact me personally about the preparation needed for the reception of the sacraments. Canon law requires that children receive their sacraments in the parish to which they are registered and belong. My permission, as pastor, is required and necessary for anyone who desires to receive their sacraments elsewhere. In addition, as the pastor, I must be able to verify that each student preparing for the sacraments is truly ready to receive them. This will require that I know each family and student, and that we will have the time to personally meet prior to the reception of the Sacraments.I invite all Cathedral parents of second grade and eighth grade students who will be preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Communion, as well as the Sacrament of Confirmation, to let me know as soon as possible. There is a form that will need to be completed and returned to me as soon as possible. It is important for me to verify that (1) the family and child is registered in the parish; (2) that the family attends Mass regularly and supports the parish; (3) that the child is in a program of formation that will prepare them for the reception of the sacraments; (4) and that we will be able to maintain contact through the coming year. There will be important meetings that all the children will be required to attend, as well as the Family Catechetical gatherings that take place every other month.

ALL HOMESCHOOLING FAMILIES in the parish must make contact with me as your pastor to review the homeschooling religion curriculum so that I can insure that your children are indeed being formed in the faith in conformity to the Church’s documents and guidelines. I am happy to meet with you annually and of course if there are homeschooling children that will receive sacraments, the same rules discussed above will apply.

GO, THEREFORE, AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS. The history of missionary activity in the Church is vibrant and fascinating. From the Apostles who first heeded the call of Jesus to “Go and make disciples of all nations” to famous missionaries like Saint Francis Xavier and the Jesuits or Saint Teresa of Calcutta and the Missionaries of Charity, there is a long tradition of those who have traveled far from home to bring the good news of Jesus to every corner of the world, even at the cost of their own lives. Today, the missionary work of the Church doesn’t have to take us to the ends of the world, but just to

the end of our street. The message of hope and new life of the Gospel is ours to share with family, neighbors, coworkers and strangers as we seek to continue the work of Jesus in the world today. At its heart, On Mission for The Church Alive! is an opportunity for us to be renewed in faith and sent forth to make new disciples in our parishes, our neighborhoods and throughout the whole world. Ask God for an abundance of his gifts to make this a reality in your life each day. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
