SHELTERED HOUSING DIRECTORY This directory is designed to help you find what accommodation is available for older people in the Swansea area. It covers accommodation owned by the Local Authority and the Housing Associations. The “questions/answers section” below gives a brief introduction as to what Sheltered Housing is. What is Sheltered Accommodation? Sheltered Accommodation is the term used to describe a group of bungalows or flats which are suited to the needs of older people. This may be because of the way they are designed, services they offer or their location. How many bedrooms would I be eligible for? Single persons or couples are eligible for a one bedroom property unless you need the extra room to store bulky Medical Equipment, need separate bedrooms for Medical Reasons, or in some cases where a carer is needed on a regular basis. You will need the doctor to support this and state the reasons for needing an additional bedroom. How old do I have to be to live in Sheltered Accommodation? Usually over 55 or 60. However, some organisations will accept applications from younger people. You need to ask the relevant landlord. Can I have a pet in Sheltered Accommodation? This varies. Some landlords allow the keeping of a small dog or cat providing it doesn’t cause a nuisance. You need to ask. What do I do if I am interested in applying for Sheltered Accommodation?
