In general schools are listed by county and, within each county,by municipal district, town or city. Amalgamated school boardareas, which in some cases overlap county boundaries, are listedseparately at the beginning of the directory.

Included as appendices are:

A — a list of schools having pupils enrolled in senior highschool grades;

B — a list of regional vocational schools;C — a list of locally—appointed supervisory personnel;D — a list of local school authorities and their secretaries;E — an alphabetical index of schools;F — a Directory of the Department of Education.

Schools within the larger urban municipalites are listed alphabetically. In other cases the schools are arranged so as toshow as nearly as possible their grouping as instructional units.In each system, sub—system or group of schools, the high schoolis listed first, followed by its feeder schools. To find theputative destinations of pupils attending elementary schools,read up except where otherwise instructed.

There is much local variation, however, in keeping with the increasing flexibility of the comprehensive school system. Different pupils of the same elementary school may proceed, according totheir requirements, to several secondary schools.

Indentation is used to indicate a school whose pupils proceed to thesecondary school named above it. Double indentation is used occasionally to indicate an elementary school which ‘feeds’ another elementary school which in turn ‘feeds’ a secondary school.

The columns which give the enrolments in commercial, auxiliary andspecial classes are not complete since in some cases separatefigures for these classes were not available.

Approximate enrolments are given as of September 30, 1971. The numberof pupils enrolled, and the number of teachers employed, may varyappreciably throughout the school year. The statistics in the Directory may therefore not tally exactly with the statistics in the AnnualReport of the Department of Education for the corresponding schoolyear, or in other directories. The figures in this Directory are notto be taken as official for statistical purposes.
