DIRECTORY OF PRINCIPAL CRUSHED STONE PRODUCERS

IN THE UNITED STATES IN 2007 A total of 1.60 billion metric tons of crushed stone valued at $13.9 billion, free on board at plant, was reported produced in the

United States in 2007 by 1,447 companies with 3,562 operations and 3,710 active quarries. These companies also reported operating 193 sales yards in 30 States.

Most of the crushed stone produced in 2007 came from operations with output larger than 200,000 metric tons per year; 1,626 operations, representing 56% of the total number of active operations, produced 93% of the total tonnage.

The 10 leading producing States were, in descending order of tonnage, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Missouri, Georgia, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and Tennessee, which accounted for 53% of the total output of crushed stone.

The companies listed in table 1 are not included in table 2 when the company is not a leading producer in a given State.

These 10 companies listed in table 1 with a total of 898 active quarries accounted for about one-half of the total output of crushed stone in the United States. In addition, these companies operated 183 sales/distribution yards.

The 10 leading quarries and the owner companies, in descending order of total output of crushed stone, were the following: 1. Vecellio & Grogan, Inc., White Rock, Dade County, FL; 2. Texas Crushed Stone Co., Inc. Georgetown, Williamson County, TX;

7. CEMEX S.A.B. de C.V., Balcones Quarry, Comal, TX; 8. Tower Rock Stone Co., Ste. Genevieve Quarry, Ste. Genevieve, MO;

These 10 quarries accounted for 5% of the total output of crushed stone in the United States. A total of 86 underground mines produced 68.6 million metric tons of crushed stone in 2007. Underground mines were located in

18 States. The leading States were, in descending order of underground crushed stone tonnage produced, Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Nebraska, and Iowa. Their production represented 72% of the total U.S. crushed stone produced from underground mines.

The leading crushed stone producers in each State in 2007 and their active quarries and sales yards are listed in table 2. The top 100 producers of crushed stone in the United States in 2007 are listed in table 3. Companies listed in table 3 may not be listed among the principal producers for a particular State even though they may have a quarry in that State.
