Background

The Georgia State University Pathological Gambling Intervention Project is has been charged with developing tools and mechanisms to engage faith based counseling centers and collectives. It is also the intent of this working document to facilitate statewide collaboration across professional populations and increased use of evidence based treatment methods. Many residents are likely to seek assistance from their church or other spiritual resources before seeking an unknown professional counselor. Many churches have developed ministries to address mental needs for work with establish pastoral counseling centers to respond to the growing behavioral health concerns of their parishioners. Though our work to reduce incidence of mental health disorders like pathological gambling, we have researched alternative ways that the community can respond. Lack of specificity for the needs of veterans issues and low awareness of PG incidence has indicated the importance of collaborative responses. Data were collected using print and electronic resources at Pitts Theological Library, directories of pastoral professional associations, online directories (e.g., Church Angel Christian Counselors Directory) and Internet searches using retrieval operators such as “religious,” “faith-based,” or “spiritual.” Direct contact with each of the identified organizations will be initiated in order to increase the level of detail of our contact information in updated versions of this directory. Bi-annual updates will be made to this document to ensure that the information remains current and to ensure diversity is represented among the various spiritual counseling centers and collectives.


Acknowledgements

Special thanks are expressed toward the staff of the Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases (MHDDAD) for their continued support of increasing access to pathological gambling intervention and treatment resources. MHDDAD provides treatment and support services to people with mental illnesses and addictive diseases, and support to people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities. MHDDAD serves people of all ages with the most severe and likely to be long-term conditions. The Substance Abuse and Mental Services Administration is also acknowledged for their provision of pathological gambling treatment kits for counselors.
