The Adult Learning and Literacy Unit: o funds agencies and organizations to provide a continuum of adult learning in Manitoba through

adult literacy programs and adult learning centres o administers General Education Development (GED) testing and certification.

Adult learning and literacy programs are: o tuition-free o located in all regions of Manitoba.

Adults enrolled in adult learning and literacy programs can:

o improve reading, writing, communication, and numeracy skills for work, school, home, and community life

o earn high school credits and/or high school diplomas to access education and employment opportunities.

Adult Literacy Programs offer:

o beginning to advanced literacy programming (Stage 1 – 3) for adult learners in reading, writing, document use, oral communication and numeracy

o assessment and instruction based on the Manitoba Stages Framework o preparation for the General Education Development (GED) certificate.

Adult Learning Centres offer:

o high school credit courses and issue high school diplomas on the basis of provincial high school graduation requirements. Courses are taught by Manitoba certified teachers and follow Manitoba Curriculum Frameworks

o the option of earning up to 4 course credits tuition-free after graduation to obtain the prerequisites to pursue further post-secondary education, training, or employment opportunities.

o recognition of prior learning services o non-credit instruction that addresses the upgrading needs of learners prior to enrolling in high

school level courses.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The Aboriginal Community Campus is a division of the Centre for Aboriginal Human Resources Development. The Campus offers educational programming year round, with a continuous intake schedule. Academic programming for all levels of learners is available. In the Upgrading program, participants are assisted with upgrading their English and Math skills to a Grade 10 level. The academic program offers educational programming for participants to obtain their Mature Student High School Diploma. Intake Schedule: Continuous Other, please explain Literacy: Continuous intake as space becomes available. Intake hours are Monday to Thursday, noon to 5pm ALC (high school credit program): August and January for semester courses; August, October and March for trimester courses.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Adult Education Centre is an adult-focused high school helping Manitobans age 19 and older to achieve their high school diplomas or upgrade their credits so they can move on to further education or better career prospects. The program offers classroom-based learning in a two-semester program with a variety of high school credits. Each credit requires two three-hour classes per week, either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. The program also offers learners Trimester courses for those needing to complete Applied Math 40S and/or English 40S by December. The literacy program allows learners to gain the necessary foundational skills in Math and English to move on to the credit system.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: AEC is part of the Seven Oaks School Division and offers vocational programming. The Centre can refer learners who are interested in a trade, to one of the programs so that learners can work on their academic compulsories as they learn a trade.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Offers a full-time Adult Literacy Program with weekday classes from September to June and weekly theme based classes in July and August. Classroom instruction supports English, numeracy and computer skills learning for students. Offers high school credit courses which include grade 10 and 11 English, Grade 10 and 11 Math, and Career Exploration for individuals transitioning to adult learning centre programming and who require literacy supports. Referrals are received from EIA case coordinators, other adult literacy programs and adult learning centres. Self referrals are addressed on a case by case basis.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: The program incorporates wrap around services for eligible individuals including Wellness Support services. Staff works in close collaboration with the Department of Families.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Students can complete their high school diploma or upgrade high school courses to prepare for college programs or employment requirements. Programs offered include the Mature Student High School Diploma (MSHSD), additional credits (high school course upgrading), and Integrated programs (combining MSHSD and post secondary programs) in Comprehensive Health Care Aide and Education Assistant. Also available is an option called “FlexLearning”. Students will be able to take courses through independent study (working on their own) with support available from an instructor at the Adult Collegiate. Students studying in this way do not have to attend school every day. However, there is an instructor and classroom available every afternoon for them to receive instruction, help, and a place to study.

This Adult Learning Centre Programming is a unique learning experience, designed with a flexible, supportive, friendly environment to help students achieve personal, educational and career goals. Upon completion of this program, students will be eligible to receive their Mature Student High School Diploma. Also available: Dual credits are selected college courses that will count for both college credit and high school credit. Intake Schedule: Continuous Other, please explain The program accepts new learners throughout the entire year. Please call, email or visit to make an intake appointment. On the day of the intake, learners bring photo ID and any educational documents that may be relevant to their goals, i.e.; high school transcript.The intake involves an informal interview where information such as name, address, phone number and academic history is collected and short and long term goals are discussed. The intake lasts about 30 minutes. Once the intake is done, learners will need to complete assessments according to their goals. These can be done the same day as the intake or scheduled for another day. The assessments may include such things as writing and math baselines, Read Forward or the CAAT. Programming will begin once the assessments are completed.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs:

BLC offers an adult literacy program and an adult learning centre program in downtown Brandon. Programming is customized to learners’ needs and schedules and allows learners to work at their own pace. The facility is wheelchair accessible and is set up, as much as possible, in a homelike, welcoming atmosphere. The open concept allows learners to work in small groups, independently on their own or one-to-one with our instructors. There is a study room for learners wanting a quieter place to study or to complete assessments.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Le Centre d’apprentissage franco manitobain s’adresse à la clientèle francophone et permet à l’étudiant adulte d’obtenir un diplôme d’études secondaires pour adultes. Le programme s’adresse à des adultes âgés de 19 ans et plus et ce sans limite d’âge. La durée de études est de 2 ans. Les cours se déroulent en salle de classe de 18h à 21h et sont donnés du lundi au jeudi. L’objectif est d’aider les apprenants à acquérir les habiletés potentiellement transférables d’un emploi a un autre pour leur permettre de s’adapter sur un marché du travail en constante évolution. Le Centre offre des cours de Chimie, Français, Mathématiques, Biologie et d’anglais pour ne citer que ceux-ci.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The program offers a continuum of learning from basic literacy to GED preparation. The range of programs include literacy, writing in the workplace, workplace communication documents, numeracy skills, computer literacy, and GED preparation and testing. Programming is offered in a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment. Instruction can be independent, one to one, or in small group sessions. The program is inclusive and wheelchair access is available.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: Learners can improve their employability skills from blocked-sessions offered in October and in April. These sessions are two-hour sessions offered twice a week over a five-week period.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: CrossRoads offers the following Grade 12 (40S) high school credit courses: Pre-calculus Math, Applied Math, Essential Math, Language Arts Transactional, Language Arts Comprehensive, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Career Development, and Applied Business Technologies/Computer Education. We concentrate on the needs of learners who intend to earn their High School Diploma or need to upgrade existing skills for university/college program. Students may be eligible to register in a variety of independent credit courses and apply these courses toward their Grade 12 Mature Student High School Diploma. The following Grade 11 (30S) courses are also available: Pre-calculus Math, Physics, and Language Arts Transactional. We offer a limited number of summer courses during July and August. From September to June, our regular day program includes three terms that operate on a 12-week schedule, Monday to Thursday. We are also introducing an extended term option during our day programming which will run September - March and will include Essential Math 40S and English 30S. Our evening program includes two terms that operate on an 18-week schedule on alternate evenings (M/W; T/Th). Teacher-directed classes are the method of instruction. Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: General academic upgrading using the three levels of the Manitoba Literacy Stages Framework. Learners work in a classroom setting using the Stages materials plus additional resources that enable them to increase their literacy skills so they are better able to pursue further education or employment opportunities and also enhance their participation in the community. There is a separate classroom for each Stage level. The program has a Stage 3+ class that helps those wanting to go on to an ALC or increase their English skill level. Numeracy/Math skills classes are also offered during the week.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The GOAL program is a FREE literacy program for adult learners 18 and older. Students work on Adult Learning and Literacy curriculum (STAGES) and on independent programs of study to achieve personal learning goals. Teachers offer assistance in GED preparation, basic computer skills, math skills and Stages curriculum.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: In addition to the Adult literacy program, the agency offers a wide variety of programs including counseling services, employment services, children's programming, Newcomer settlement services, traditional Indigenous parenting program, men's and women's therapeutic groups, community gardens, wellness workshops, after-school programs and drop-in services at 545 Watt Street. There is also access to computers, phones, faxing and coffee. All services are provided at no cost. Also offered throughout the year are a variety of workshops and special events such as grief and loss groups, multi-cultural community celebrations, community lunches and summer family fun days.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Faith Learning Centre offers a Mature Student High School Diploma program to adults who reside primarily in the Winnipeg Inner City. The admission process includes an assessment of English and Math skills for proper academic placement. Students can start with upgrading courses if needed to transition into high school credit courses. Students who are ready to start credit courses are registered in grade 9 to 12 credits. A total of 8 credits are required to graduate with a Mature Student High School Diploma, 4 credits at grade 12 level and 4 credits at any other senior level 9-12. Classes are offered daily from Monday through Friday, each class consists of 1 ½ hours per day during three terms of the year.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Jobworks Adult Learning Centre operates on a trimester system: 1st Trimester - September to December; 2nd Trimester - January to April; 3rd Trimester - May to August. These dates coordinate with entry dates of many college/university programs. The program offers the following Grade 12 (40S) courses: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics (Pre-Calculus, Applied, and Essential), Global Issues, Psychology, Cinema as a Witness to Modern History, and English (Transactional, Comprehensive, and Technical). The program also offers Grade 11 English Comprehensive (30S). Chemistry, Biology, and Physics are taught in a fully equipped science lab. Courses offered can be used as credits towards a High School Diploma or for upgrading for post-secondary education.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Literacy programming is offered at the Winnipeg Remand Centre, Headingley and Milner Ridge Correction Centres. In addition, services are provided to clients from the community who are working men (18+) involved with the criminal justice system. One-to-one tutoring is offered at the Winnipeg Remand Centre to inmates of all educational backgrounds and literacy levels. The program provides academic upgrading and helps to improve basic literacy/numeracy skills. The Peer Tutor Program is taught at the Headingley and Milner Ridge Correction Centres. This program prepares participants to teach reading, writing, math and problem solving to their peers.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: The John Howard Society produces a series of personal development literacy workbooks on topics of interest to our clients. These are available for purchase by other literacy programs or learners outside of our agency. Visit www.johnhoward.mb.ca website to order. Get The Story Out is a program for incarcerated fathers who wish to maintain a connection to their children through reading. Fathers read a story while volunteers record and produce a CD, which is mailed to the child along with the book. The Inside Scoop is a newsletter filled with poetry, stories, editorials, and artwork submitted by incarcerated men and women and sent to correctional facilities across Canada.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The Kelsey Learning Centre (KLC) Literacy/Adult Learning Centre programs take the learner from where they are at to preparing to earn a Province of Manitoba Mature Student High School Diploma. Mature Student High School Diploma credit courses are classroom-based with mandatory attendance. The KLC staff are highly qualified and nurturing. Staff create a non-threatening environment and build an atmosphere where it is safe to learn from mistakes. Leaners who have faced past negative educational experiences, build self-confidence, self-esteem, and most importantly a "can do" attitude and approach to learning and life.

The Dauphin Friendship Centre recognizes that the learners have barriers and are flexible with the learners’ needs. The program offers free school supplies and one-on-one instruction.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: The Dauphin Friendship Centre has several programs on location and refers clients and learners to the programs that are offered at the Centre. Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: A comfortable, safe, respectful and encouraging setting is provided where adults returning to school are able to progress. The Program is individualized and utilizes resources that are suitable for the skill level and goals determined for each learner at registration. Learners requiring gap training to register in credit courses at adult learning centres can access specific writing and higher level numeracy instruction. The teacher and educational assistants are knowledgeable and patient and provide assistance to help each learner experience success. The Monday/Wednesday evening literacy classes are specifically for learners with an EAL background who already have a Benchmark 4 level. The Tuesday/Thursday classes are for learners requiring Basic Literacy, upgrading, prep for credit courses at Adult Learning Centres, GED prep, upgrading for entry to college courses, training courses, or improving literacy and numeracy skills for their work. Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Program offers a Certificate in Literacy and Learning which is awarded by the Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre in accordance with MALLA stages. The Certificate is available at three different stages of learners’ development. The ABE program offers individual and group instruction to anyone 18 years of age and older. The maximum enrolment is twelve learners per class. The program is designed to accommodate the needs of learners to improve their basic skills in a comfortable and supportive environment. The learner’s education levels are determined at the time of application. An assessment may be conducted by an assessment officer.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Central Manitoba Adult Literacy Program offers Literacy programming for learners needing to improve their academic skills. The Literacy Program is divided into 3 levels: Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 that align with the Essential Skills Levels. The Stages focus on improving Essential skills in Reading Text, Document Use, Oral Communications, Writing, Numeracy, Working with Others, Thinking Skills, Continuous Learning, and Computer Use. Completion of Stage 3 may result in receiving up to two high school credits towards a Mature Student High School Diploma. Portage Adult Learning Centre offers a wide variety of high school level courses to meet the requirements for the Mature Student High School Diploma (MSHSD) as well as the prerequisites for college and university. This Centre offers both quarter and full semester classes, as well Tuesday evening classes.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Both McLeod and Transcona ALCs offer classroom-based high school credit courses towards the Mature Student High School Diploma and for graduates wanting to upgrade their credits for work or post-secondary education/training. Courses are available at the Grade 10, 11, and 12 levels. At McLeod there is also a pre-high school English and Math program to prepare adult learners for high school credit courses. The literacy program allows learners to gain the necessary foundational skills in Math and English to move on to the credit system.

Morrow Day Care is located in same building and prioritizes daycare spots for St. Vital students. Teenstop Jeunesse also provides on-site services including a Drop in Centre and a community transition worker. Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The Seven Oaks ALC delivers a flexible and comprehensive program, designed to meet student expectations. The Centre offers pre-requisite courses which allow students to graduate and move on to post-secondary institutions. During a registration appointment, each student completes an education plan that meets their academic and personal needs. The main focus of the ALC is on Essential Math 40S or Applied Math 40S and three different English 40S courses. The program offers a selection of optional grade 12 courses: Applied Business Technology, Drama, Art, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Topics in First Nations and Life Work Transitioning. Physical Education, Community Service and Cultural Exploration are offered on an independent basis. Courses are subject to change. Preparatory (pre-Grade 12) courses in Math, English & Science are available to provide students with the background and experience needed to be successful in the grade 12 courses. The centre is open on Fridays for students to work on assignments, use computers to complete final copies of work or for workshops and presentations.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: Students can access vocational programming offered in the Seven Oaks School Division. This includes Aviation Trades, Health Care Aide, Culinary, Hospitality, Automotive Trades, Plumbing & Pipe Trades, Early Child Care Educator, Electrical Trades, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Sustainable Energy, Building Trades, and Performing Arts Production and Industry. Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Steps to Success provides adult literacy programming for individuals to improve their reading, writing, document use, and oral communication skills for work, education, or life in general. Steps to Success also provides workplace essential skills training

as well as GED tutoring.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: Steps to Success operates under the YWCA Thompson. The YWCA Thompson also operates the Assessment Centre, which provides academic assessments and career exploration. Additionally, the YWCA offers a Women's Centre which provides counselling and support for women and their families; and a transitional program to help people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: STEP is a full-time, Monday - Friday literacy program for individuals who are reading below a grade 6 level. Small class sizes are perfect for students who require more one-on-one assistance. Volunteer tutors are also available both inside and outside of class time.

Additional Programming/Services Offered by Agency: STEP works closely with WKRP (a work readiness program) for students who are interested in improving their employability skills. Computer classes are offered once a week as part of the literacy classes. Through The Salvation Army, learners can receive practical assistance such as emergency food assistance, personal hygiene items, school supplies and daily beverages and snacks.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: . This centre is designed to provide adult learners with the opportunity to complete their g high school Diploma, improve employability skills, or obtain necessary credits for entrance into post-secondary educational institutions. The Centre serves members, retirees, family and friends of local 832. The centre has five classrooms and one computer lab. The Adult High school program is offered in partnership with MITT and is one of the four main program streams that are offered at UFCW Training Centre.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The UCN Adult Learning Centre offers many options for learners who want to upgrade their academic skills, complete a high school diploma, or increase their competitiveness in the job market.

UCN ALC offers small classes with friendly, qualified teachers who are dedicated to their students. Day and evening course options are offered to meet the needs of full time or part-time students. In addition to classroom-based options, students can also participate in a flexible, individually-paced course options.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: Students work at their own pace and on their own schedule either in class or at home with materials provided from the school. Teachers are available throughout the day and offer assistance to students either in groups or one-on-one. Students working from home are able to phone in to speak with instructors for help or attend class in-person for help.

Description of the Adult Literacy and Adult Learning Centre Programs: The WELL program is an adult literacy program offering upgrading in the areas of reading, writing, and oral communication. Laptops are included in class activities. One-on-one and small group instruction is available during each class. There is no cost to participants.
