Tom Oliver has practiced in the transportation arena for over 20 years, representing transportation companies in all phases of litigation. He focuses over two-thirdsof his practice to the defense of motor carriers in both court and regulatory systems. Tom primarily handles litigation in the state and federal courts of Alabama,but has routinely advised motor carriers and their insurers in jurisdictions throughout the United States. I have been doing rapid responses for more than 25 years. Over the last 10 years, my firm and I have handled an average of around 50-60 rapid responses per year.I have been on 24 hour call for my clients for the last 25 years and I have developed relationships with most of the accident reconstructionists, transportation ad-justers, and other transportation rapid response resources in this State. My firm and I are typically able to begin a rapid response within minutes of receiving no-tice from our clients and make it our practice to coordinate a reconstruction of an accident, a Level 1 inspection of Commercial Vehicle, an ECM Download,interview of known witnesses, and all required post-accident drug testing within 24 hours of receiving notice of the accident.


I have spoken at numerous TIDA, USLAW, and DRI seminars as well as programs put on by numerous trucking companies and insurance carriers.


I initially started doing transportation defense work more than 25 years ago. I currently devote roughly 50% of my practice to defense of Transportation compa-nies and their drivers. My firm has tried more than 50 transportation cases to verdict, many of which were for wrongful death and/or complicated injuries (suchas brain injuries, paraplegic, and quadriplegic cases. I was on the board of directors of TIDA for nine years (the maximum allowable). I have spoken extensively atseminars and training sessions that focused on issues particular to the commercial transportation industry. Spike has more than 25 years of civil trial defense experience with more than 200 jury trials. He heads up the West Palm Beach office of Wicker Smith and is in-volved in most serious trials including death and catastrophic injury cases. Though he has always been involved in trucking cases, over the past five years, it hasexpanded to approximately 60 % of his practice. Among the cases he has tried, Spike represented a truck that turned in front of an oncoming motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle fractured most of the bonesin his body and claimed brain damage. Because of thorough discovery and surveillances, he was able to settle the case for 1 million after demands of many timesgreater. He also tried a bad burn case in which the plaintiff was killed and there was an allegation of a failure to warn of a disabled truck. Just prior to the verdict,the plaintiff’s attorney accepted the offer that was made at the beginning of litigation.

Jamie Lane is a partner in the firm’s Chicago office concentrating his practice in Commercial Transportation. He is an experienced trial attorney, having tried over90 trials to verdict in many Illinois venues including Cook, its surrounding counties and southern Illinois districts including Madison County. Recent verdicts in-clude defeating multiple claims of catastrophic injuries including those of a plaintiff with over $1.0 million in medical bills, claim for traumatic brain injury andextensive orthopedic injuries of 24 year old bicyclist, as well as numerous claims of total disability, spoliation of evidence, and punitive damages against a nationaltransportation companies.

For over sixteen years, Jamie has been concentrating his practice in the representation of motor carriers and their insurers in state and federal jurisdictions. Inaddition to litigating matters at trial, he counsels them in all aspects of their business including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. He is a member ofSmithAmundsen’s Commercial Transportation Rapid Response Team which is responsible for coordinating the securing of evidence, experts, and responding tocatastrophic losses throughout Illinois and northern Indiana. Jamie also performs monitoring work and associates as counsel at the request of excess lines in cat-astrophic losses.

Jeff O’Hara has represented a number of the country’s largest motor carriers. He previously supervised major claims investigation and general litigation efforts na-tionally for a publicly-traded power and energy company, including its transportation fleet.

As of June 2010, Jeff has handled over 65 jury trials, with 52 verdicts. The Supreme Court of New Jersey re-certified him as a Certified Civil Trial Attorney in 2006– a recognition he has enjoyed since 1999. Ms. Jackson focuses more than half of her practice on transportation law. She has extensive experience investigating, preparing, and trying a variety of complexdisputes to verdict before judge and jury in all forms of civil trial practice. Prior to joining LeClairRyan, she served 10 years as an attorney in the U.S. Army JudgeAdvocate General’s Corps. During her Army career, she accumulated significant trial experience as a prosecutor and senior prosecutor. She tried numerous juryand bench trials, including high profile murder cases. In her final assignment, she served as a professor of international and operational law at the U.S. ArmyJudge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia. There she taught military and civilian lawyers intelligence law and interrogation op-erations, legal aspects of information warfare, and the legal implications of military support to civilian authorities and disaster relief efforts.

Paul Loftus has devoted his career to transportation litigation. Paul has actively defended transportation clients in major transportation accidents ranging fromderailments, hazardous materials releases, and worker claims, to maritime incidents. Mary Sanders has been defending national and regional trucking companies for over twenty years. In addition, she represents coal haulers, timber haulers, rockand ashphalt trucks and commercial auto claims. Her trucking experience also includes claims of chemical exposure, product liability, and driver training. Thesecases involve third party liability personal injury claims, dock claims, cargo claims, tariff claims before the Public Service Commission and claims of propertydamage before the West Virginia Court of Claims. Samantha Ip is a partner of the firm and has been nationally recognized for her legal work.
