With Spring weather finally here, DCA continues to support USMA and the Corps of Cadets through one of the busiest times of the year. We have another busy weekend ahead of us with five clubs competing in their respective National Championships - Triathlon, Water Polo, Kara-te, Equestrian and Crew. We wish all of these teams the best of luck as they strive to excel and represent the United State Corps of Cadets with pride and dignity. In the midst of the busy Spring schedule, I'd like to thank the Cadet Hostess, Ms. Cynthia Hunter and her program coordinator, Ms. Kathy Keirsey for all of the hard work they do to en-sure events are successful. On 19 April, Ms. Hunter presented an etiquette briefing to the Class of 2018 in preparation for Graduation Week activities and on 29 April, she will conduct her an-nual military wedding and wedding reception etiquette course. Additionally, Ms. Hunter was instrumental in ensuring the King and Queen of the Belgians has a flawless event by providing support to BG Gilland and his family as they hosted the distinguished visitors here at West Point. This weekend and Lake Frederick, the Scout Masters will host one of the biggest annual events at West Point - the Boy Scout Camporee. This is a spectacular event that highlights opportuni-ties at West Point to a great group of young Americans. If you're looking for a great family event this weekend, bring the family to The Plain as the West Point Parachute Team hosts the Inter-service Academy meet. Always a fun event for spectators, get out to cheer on our cadets as they take on Navy and Air Force in sky diving competition!

Army West Point Powerlifting Team represented the United States Military Academy at the 2018 USA
Powerlifting Collegiate Nationals from 19 to 21 April, 2018.
This year’s competition was hosted by Texas A&M University at College Station, TX. The meet was held
in the Hall of Champions by Kyle Field.
The competition this year was incredible, as the sport of Powerlifting has grown in popularity.
Six members of the Powerlifting Team were able to secure top 10 finishes in their weight categories:
Morgan Willcox, ’18 (8th place), Brian Degori, ’19 (8th place), Denny Chung, ’18 (9th place), John Roll,
’19 (9th place), and Annette Yoon, ’18 (10th place).
All members of the team who competed were able to register a total this year for the first time in recent
history, making this a very successful meet for the Powerlifting Team.
This competition closes out AY18 competitions for the Powerlifting Team, which registered a win over
Navy in December for both the men’s and women’s team.
The team is now bearing down for the end of the academic year, focusing on beating the Dean, and
working on developing training plans as the focus shifts toward the military pillar for summer training.

MILITARY CLUBS Aviation The West Point Flying Team hosted the 5th Annual Service Academy
Spring Classic flying event 20-22 APR 2018.
Friday morning, competitors from Navy, Coast Guard, and West Point
met on the fields of friendly strife, searching for aircraft issues during the
preflight event, followed by precision simulator flights at Orange County
Airport.
The second day of competition brought chilly, but flyable weather allow-
ing the competitors to demonstrate their precision flying skills in power
on and power off landings, attempting to put the aircraft as close as pos-
sible to chalk lines placed on the runway.
After lunch, aircraft launched with teams of two: a pilot and a
“bombardier,” competing in the message drop event, where pilots flew
over two barrels placed in the grass adjacent to the runway, making two
attempts to try to get a weighted message container into the barrels.
Sunday morning brought light winds and a beautiful day to fly the naviga-tion event, predicting time over target and fuel burn as carefully as possi-
ble, then evaluating the pilot/navigator team’s ability to fly as close as
possible to their plan.
The day culminated with an awards lunch.
West Point beat Navy and Coast Guard for the 5th time with
some outstanding team and individual results. Significant Army
finishes are shown below.

Astronomy ACADEMIC CLUBS
On 21 APR 2018, the Cadet Astronomy and
Amateur Radio Clubs joined forces with the
West Point Black Knight Satellite capstone
project to launch two balloon satellites. Sev-
en cadets participated from the Astronomy
and Amateur Radio Clubs to launch various
experiments including a WiFi detector, an
inertial measurement unit, a Geiger counter and three cameras. Four cadets participated in launching test
payloads for the Black Knight Satellite – a 2-U cube-sat! This was the eleventh balloon satellite launch by
the club in 10 years. The launch site was slightly North-east of Binghamton, NY, and the “launch vehicles”
were a 3-kilogram latex balloon for Astronomy and Amateur Radio
Clubs, and a 1-kilogram latex balloon for the Black Knight Satellite. The
weather balloons were chosen to lift payloads contained within
Styrofoam coolers with a total average mass of 1.5 kilograms. The As-
tronomy and Amateur Radio Club’s mission reached an all-time altitude record of over 117,779 feet. However the actual peak altitude will not
be known until the payload is recovered from a site on the South side
of Poughkeepsie, NY, where it is tangled in the top of a roughly 60-foot
tree. 2d Aviation Detachment is conducting a recon of the site to de-
termine if remote retrieval of the payload is possible. Black Knight Satellite successfully retrieved their pay-
load just inside the southern coastline of Bridgeport, CT. Data and results from the on-board experiments
will be published pending analysis. Participating cadets include Cullen Johnson, Chase Lewis, Annemarie
Narvaez, Nicholas McDonald, Andrew Constable, Ethan McInturff, and Isaac McMillan from Astronomy
and Amateur Radio Clubs, sponsored by LTC Diana Loucks (PaNE), Dr. Paula Fekete (PaNE), and LTC
Stephen Hamilton (ACI). The Black Knight Satellite team participants were Cadets Carl Johnson, Brandon
Perry, Preston Pritchard and Cole Kunze sponsored by MAJ Matthew Sherburne (EECS). Also in attend-
ance were former USMA faculty Dr. Eric Myers, SUNY New Paltz, and Dr. Joseph Lynch, Director of Reli-
gious Education, US Army Garrison, West Point.

ACADEMIC CLUBS American Society for Engineering Mgmt
On 18 April 2018, sixteen Cadets and three Faculty members from the
American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) club, traveled to
Hoboken, New Jersey to visit a United Parcel Service (UPS) distribution
hub.
This particular UPS facility processes approximately 1 million packages a
day.
Cadets learned about the technology required to sort such a high volume
of packages and were briefed on the processes and challenges of running
such a complex operation.
They also learned about new advancements in technology and operations
management tools that UPS has dedicated capital expenditures toward
such as ORION technology to optimize driver’s routes.
The cadets toured the facility alongside students from Stevens Institute of
Technology and then had lunch together at the Stevens Institute of Tech-
nology campus. This was a great opportunity to connect with leaders and students in the
engineering management field in the New York City area.
HOBBY CLUBS Tae Kwon Do This past weekend the Army Taekwondo team travelled up to University of
Vermont to compete in the last ECTC taekwondo tournament of the year.
This tournament is the culmination of a year's hard work and dedication to the
sport.
The team performed well, with all sparing team advancing to at least the quar-
terfinals of their respective brackets. CDT Richard Sung earned bronze in the
men's yellow belt poomsae competition.
Additionally, Cadets Travis Phelan, Benjamin Turner, and Conner Sparks earned
the bronze medal in the men's advanced division.
Overall, the team was able to secure third at the tournament overall and third
for the end of the year standings.
The team had a successful year, exceeding the cumulative amount of points
from last year and placing better during tournaments throughout the season
than in previous years (taking second place twice).
On another note, this was the last tournament for the teams firsties, bringing their college taekwondo career to an end.
The firsties consist of, CDTs Eli Eichenberger, Tak Cho, William Xu, Anthony
Chargualaf, Travis Phelan, Jada Ferrer, Hevin Na, and Jordan Nettles.
They all fought well and demonstrated resiliency and courage out on the mats
this weekend, putting their warrior spirit on full display.
Win or lose, the firsties have left the team with a breadth of knowledge and
experience that they will continue to use to better themselves.
Good luck to the firsties as they take on a new challenge and join the operational Army to pursue their
military careers. And as always, One Team, One Fight!
Tae Kwon Do HOBBY CLUBS
Last weekend the Army Taekwondo team travelled down to American University in
Washington D.C. to compete at Collegiate Taekwondo Nationals.
The competition was tough but the team was still able to produce three national cham-
pions.
CDT Madison Curry became the men's heavy yellow belt national champion.
CDT Richard Sung became the men's yellow belt welter weight national champion and
CDT Travis Phelan became the men's green belt middle weight national champion.
Additionally, the team brought home many silver and bronze medals as well.
CDTs George Ngoh placed second in the men's yellow belt lightweight division.
CDTs Uzoma Ezeonyeka, Antonio Viera,Chris Dao,and Ara Gahan all placed third in
their respective divisions.
Notably, in the black belt Champion's division, Ashley Rivera earned the bronze medal
in her division.
Although they did not come home with the first place trophy, the team dominated
where it could and showed the strength of the Army West Point Taekwondo program
against other schools.
The team is excited where it is in its development, as new members are gaining experi-
ence.
The team will be ready to bring back the national championship trophy back to West
Point in the upcoming years.
Bass Fishing
The Bass Fishing Club entered three boats in the FLW College Fishing
Northern Regional Qualifier on Smith Mountain Lake, VA.
Our top team of Parker Meytrott '18 and Rocco Caywood '19 hauled in five
nice largemouth bass to finish in 14th place out of 110 boats.
Their 13 pounds-2 ounces narrowly missed a Top 10 finish and an automatic
berth to the National Championships by less than 1/2 pound.

HOBBY CLUBS Chess The tournament went well with CDTs Zade Koch and TJ Kilcullen tying for 1st
place in the U1700 section.
The team also had a number of positive interactions centered on the appearance
on the cover of the most recent issue of Chess Life.
• The 20-22 April 2018 Cadet Fly Fishing Trip to Frost Valley YMCA in the Catskill
Mountains for eight cadets and two staff and faculty had some wonderfully scenic fish-
ing opportunities, but was highlighted by a service project in support of Frost Valley. •
Frost Valley has a maple sugaring operation consisting of nearly 1200 tapped trees,
along with all the associated tubing to get the sap from trees to the sugar house. They
are in the process of updating their 15 year old gravity feed system to a new vacuum
pump system. The cadet fly fishing club helped them with one of the critical tasks. •
Cadets removed the lines from trees, disconnected the lines, and hauled them out of
the forest. The work site was the side of a hill, so cadets were constantly climbing up
and down the hill to retrieve the tubing and remove it. • Upon completion of the work, the ca-
dets did get to fish the wonderful waters at Frost Valley. Bisquit Brook,
Pigeon Brook, and the West Branch of the Neversink were great waters
but the cold water and sluggish trout did not cooperate.
Climbing This past weekend West Point's Rock Climbing Club hosted 9 Coast Guard Cadets and their
OIC for two days of collaborative climbing between the service academies.
On Friday (20APR) USCGA Cadets were oriented to the Class of '79 Wall and spent the even-
ing rehearsing proper climbing techniques, including belay and safety procedures. They were
hosted overnight by members of the USMA Climbing Club and even found time to try out the
IOCT.
On Saturday (21APR), they traveled with 5 West Point Cadets and 3 OICs to the Shawangunk
Mountains in Garnier, NY to apply climbing skills in a practical environment.
The inter-service coordination and comradery displayed brought great credit on both institu-
tions.
It reflected a culmination of efforts by both clubs with no shortage of personal courage or esprit
de corps proudly displayed. Both clubs come away with a better understanding of the other ser-
vice and academy and eagerly look forward to future opportunities to climb together.

Scuba
We called this trip "endurance theatre."
We started the day by seeing Uegene O'Neill's masterpiece play The
Iceman Cometh.
The play is nearly 4 hours long, and is an amazing collection of charac-
ter studies that highlight the talents of a star-studded cast.
The play was in previews, and opens next week.
The cadets were blown away by the play and the performances, and
after the show had a brief encounter with Mr. Clark Middleton who
was pleasantly surprised to learn that West Point has a theatre club.
Two of our cadets had the chance to see a different play (also in pre-
views) called Saint Joan.
It was a different take on the Joan of Arc story, and the performance got
rave reviews from the cadets.
After grabbing a quick dinner we were off to our second play of the
evening, Lobby Hero starring Chris Evans, Michael Cera, Brian Tyree Henry, and Bel Powley.
We particularly enjoyed Lobby Hero for its relevance to principles of
leadership and ethics.
It was a humorous and thoughtful look at core principles and what choices we make under pressure.
After the show, cadets got some autographs and took a photo with Mr. Brian Tyree Henry.
The Lobby Hero Twitter account liked and re-tweeted our stage-door selfie.

Jewish Chapel Choir
Baptist Student Union RELIGIOUS CLUBS
Nine cadets in BCM participated in the simulcast of Secret Church,
an annually Biblically focused sermon given by David Platt.
The cadets watched the simulcast at Mr. Cowan's quarters.
Most of the cadets who attended have active leadership roles in BCM and
the chapel ministries.
They learned Biblical doctrine and also experienced what Christians in
other countries which do not have religious freedom must endure.
It was a great event, and we plan to participate in next Spring's simulcast.
Members of the Jewish Chapel Choir traveled to Savannah, GA to par-
ticipate in the community’s commemoration of the 70th anniversary of
Israeli Independence.
The choir attended Sabbath services at Temple Agudath Achim.
Following services the choir performed secular and religious pieces in
English and Hebrew.
Cadets also held a question and answer session, during which members
of the congregation were able to satisfy their curiosity about West
Point and Cadet Life.
The choir also took the opportunity to tour Savannah’s historic waterfront district, walking the cobble-
stone streets and exploring the city’s small park squares, war monuments and fountains.

ON 17 March, 7 Cadets and 1 OIC from the Society of Hispanic professional Engineers (SHPE) traveled to New York City for a STEM outreach workshop at the Robert R. Goddard Junior High School (MS202.)
At the school, cadets were able to work and speak with over two hundred students on the importance of diversity in STEM and inspire them to consider further education in STEM and service to our nation.
Cadets facilitated a problem solving exercise with junior high students. Students had to design a bridge to certain specifications while optimizing their design to minimize weight. Cadets then conducted a physical training session during gym class that culminated with a discussion on service to the nation and the importance of physical and mental toughness.
Overall the single day event was low cost and high impact. The Cadets had a great opportunity to give back to the community and inspire our nation’s next generation while connecting with people from New York City. The SHPE club was also able to build a relationship with school administrators for future outreach events.

Thursday 26 April 18 4th Regiment Spring Fling was held on the Apron of MacArthur Long Barracks 1700-2000. Cadets barbequed
and took advantage of the great weather. They were playing Frisbee out on the lawn and enjoyed the activi-
ties provided. DCA supported the event with the Red Cross Therapy dogs, a variety of games from the store-
room, a mechanical bull and jousting challenge.
