In 2014, Wexner Heritage Village continued to thrive and ensure our position as an essential component of this community – despite sweeping changes in the healthcare industry that threaten the traditional nursing home model – by concentrating on two key strategies: diversifying our services and building partnerships with Central Ohio’s leading acute care providers.

D I V E R S I F I C AT I O N

Wexner Home CareWe spent a great deal of 2014 developing what is now known as Wexner Home Care. Last autumn we announced that our home care practice and our geriatric care management services had been combined to create a single, integrated entity. The change made us the only provider in the region that ensures every home care client no-cost supervision of their case by a professional geriatric care manager.

Our geriatric care managers are trained professionals who promote a holistic, client-centered approach to the care of older adults facing health challenges. They work with Wexner Home Care clients and their families to identify ways to maintain quality of life and independence at home as well as a safe, supportive living environment. They make WHV an active partner in our client’s care, something their families have told us they appreciate.

The CottageLooking forward to 2015, we have put in motion plans to expand our memory care assisted living residence, The Cottage, from its original 10 suites to 18. As you may recall, the Cottage opened in 2011 and was fully occupied, with a waiting list, within months of opening.

We know that the demand for assisted living coupled with dementia-related care will only continue to grow over the next several decades, as more than 70 million Baby Boomers continue to age, because it provides a better quality of life and is more cost effective than traditional nursing home care. To be prepared, we are constantly exploring how we can best provide care and support for those with dementia and their caregivers.

Wexner OneCallWHV recently launched Wexner OneCall, a single telephone number potential clients and their families can call for help sorting out all their senior healthcare and housing needs. We took this step because our experience has been that many of the people who call us for help don’t really know what is available or how to find what they need. By matching the caller with the appropriate line of business from the start, Wexner OneCall lets us capture customers who, in the past, might have fallen through the cracks.

The number is manned by a staff member 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and all calls are returned within 24 hours by an experienced WHV associate who can connect potential customers with any of the WHV lines of business: home care, hospice, independent and assisted living, rehabilitation, memory care assisted living and long-term care.

Visiting Nurse AssociationIn August 2014, WHV partnered with the Visiting Nurse Association of Ohio to create a Comprehensive Wellness Program & Clinic inside each of our subsidized housing complexes for seniors – Heritage Tower and Bexley Heritage Apartments – which serve a total of nearly 200 residents.

The goal of the wellness clinics is to enable our residents to remain independently in their homes, out of the hospital and out of the much costlier nursing home, for as long as possible. OSU Wexner Medical CenterThe Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has recently extended for another year its groundbreaking partnership with Zusman Hospice as the exclusive hospice provider within the OSU hospital system. Starting in 2014, Zusman has maintained two hospice rooms at the hospital’s Ross Heart Hospital, which has increased hospice admissions and grown the organization’s census.

OhioHealthAlso in 2014, Wexner Rehabilitation was selected to join the OhioHealth Skilled Nursing Facility Continuing Care Network. That partnership allows WHV to share best practices with other area senior healthcare organizations and puts it on OhioHealth preferred providers list with the goal of reducing hospital re-admissions and creating more successful transitions from the medical to home setting.

When you put it all together, you can see that we spent 2014 focused on satisfying our objective of becoming an active partner in every patient’s care. It was a true team effort and I personally want to thank the Board of Directors, my corporate leadership team, the staff from across Wexner Heritage Village, our clients and their families, and our generous donors for their ongoing commitment. Wexner Heritage Village has been entrusted with looking after our community’s older adults at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives for more than 60 years. And, with all of your help, we plan on being around for at least another 60 years.

A Message from Eric WasserstromChair WHV Board of Directors

At this time last year, I remarked that just six months had passed since we reached the half-way mark in our community wide Campaign to Revolutionize Care, a five-year, $10-million fundraising initiative to support the strategic changes that guarantee Wexner Heritage Village’s position as Central Ohio’s premier senior healthcare and housing provider for years to come.

This year, I have the privilege of sharing with you the fantastic news that we have successfully reached our original $10-million goal – a full year ahead of schedule.

And already the benefit of the community’s investment in WHV is being realized in the form of increased efficiency through the use of electronic medical records; more specialized rehabilitation offerings, including those for patients recovering from cardiac conditions, stroke and respiratory issues; our groundbreaking partnership between Zusman Hospice and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Ross Heart Hospital; and more and better assisted living options for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Reaching such an important milestone is the result of a true community-wide effort to guarantee the well-being of our older adults for generations to come. We are truly grateful. However, we are not done yet.

Thanks to the generosity of Les and Abigail Wexner, who have agreed to add a third $1 million to their commitment to WHV in the form of a dollar-for-dollar match, we have the opportunity to bring the final Campaign total to $12 million. I am confident that a community of our size and with such a rich history of compassion and caring will not waste this unique opportunity.

Since this is the last time I will have the chance to speak publicly as Chair of the Wexner Heritage Village Board of Directors, I want to take a moment to thank all those who made my time as Chair meaningful and whose diligence ensures WHV is positioned to provide the comprehensive, high-quality senior healthcare and housing services our community has come to expect and our seniors deserve – my fellow board members, WHV’s corporate leaders, the staff in all areas of Wexner Heritage Village, our clients and their families, and our generous donors.

A special thank you is due to campaign co-chairs Jim Bowman and Randy Arndt. Their efforts over the long-run have made a huge impact on me and all who have had the pleasure of working with them over the years.

Finally, I want to wish Gary Rosenstein nothing but success as the incoming Board Chair. I hope you find your time as leader of this amazing organization as satisfying and fulfilling as I have. Congratulations.

Installation of WHV Board ChairGary Rosenstein, Incoming Chair

Gary has a long history of leadership in the Central Ohio business community as well as among various Jewish community institutions. In addition to his work with Wexner Heritage Village, he also recently co-chaired a sub-group of the Portrait of Jewish Columbus study committee of Jewish Federation of Columbus and was a member of the Congregation Beth Tikvah Community of Practice committee.

He is currently Vice President at Nationwide Advantage, a key initiative of Nationwide Financial Retirement Plans, part of Nationwide Insurance. Gary joined Nationwide in August 2005 and was previously Vice President, Business and Product Development for Nationwide Retirement Plans. He was also part of the leadership team that launched Nationwide Bank, serving as Chief Marketing Officer; and helped to drive growth of Nationwide’s Annuities and Life Insurance businesses as Vice President of Marketing.“We are very fortunate to have someone with Gary’s experience and talents leading the board as we finish developing and begin implementing our strategic plan for the next three years,” WHV President and CEO David Rosen said. “I am confident Gary has the vision and determination to continue to build on the successes of the last eight years.”

Prior to joining Nationwide, Gary’s roles included Vice President of Product Development, Marketing and Creative Services at Elmer’s Products, Vice President of Marketing at The Scotts Company and Brand Manager at The Procter & Gamble Company.

Gary received his MBA from the Wharton Business School, where he was distinguished as a Palmer Scholar, and graduated summa cum laude in accounting from the University of Maryland. He resides in Dublin with his wife Paula and family.

The Eleanor & Jack Resler Life with Dignity AwardRandall S. Arndt, Recipient

Presented by the Wexner Heritage Village Board of Directors, The Life with Dignity Award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to furthering the mission and values of Wexner Heritage Village. This year, the Board chose to honor member Randall S. Arndt. “Randy has been a true friend and advocate for Wexner Heritage Village,” said Board Chair Eric Wasserstrom. “His enduring commitment to this organization, combined with his effectiveness as a leader, has made much of the work that happens here not only possible, but exemplary.”

Arndt is a Partner in the real estate practice group of Ice Miller LLP. A Central Ohio native, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University in 1978 and a Juris Doctor degree from The National Law Center at George Washington University in 1981. Arndt grew up in Bexley, where he still resides, and graduated from Bexley High School in 1974.

In addition to currently serving as Co-Chair of the Wexner Heritage Village Capital Campaign, Arndt is a Lifetime Director of the Wexner Heritage Village Board of Directors and is a past Chair of the Board.

“Randy’s commitment to the Jewish community, as well as the greater Columbus community, runs wide and deep,” Rosen said. “He is very generous with his time and talents and truly sincere in his passion for a wide variety of causes.”

Arndt currently serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Columbus Jewish Foundation, Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Greater Columbus Arts Council and Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program. He is a past President/Chairman of Jewish Family Services, Columbus College of Art and Design, the

Community Relations Commission of the City of Columbus, the Columbus AIDS Task Force and the Netcare Corporation. Additionally, he has served as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Columbus Jewish Federation.
