Director’s NoteAt first glance the Taming of the Shrew seems nothing more than a story of feminine suppression in a male dominated society and indeed many have staged this comedy to that intent. A closer look beyond the chauvinistic practice of arranged marriages reveals a potent medicine for our current cultural ailments. To see it though we must ask larger questions such as why is Katharine shrewish? And subsequently (spoiler alert) why is she eventually transformed into a peaceable Kate through Petruchio’s offer of marriage? By the time Petruchio arrives on the scene Katharine has developed some anger management issues as she chaffs against labels and a patriarchal society that has cruelly defined her as a stale shrew. There is a truth that a misbehaving child is a discouraged child and living in the shadow of the lovely Bianca could certainly be discouraging especially if you knew she wasn’t perfect. Consider that Kate is the daughter that obediently marries at her mother’s behest while Bianca marries without her mother’s permission behind her back. No wonder when Petruchio boldly offers Kate a way out of her “unmarriageable" infamy and insists that she is not a shrew and instead offers her a new name with the chance to begin again, no longer as Kate the curst but as Kate the blest, the prettiest Kate in all Christendom, she accepts his offer of freedom from her reputation and family.

Another thought to consider is that Shakespeare was very familiar with his bible and the allegories therein. He would have known the parable of the bridegroom and that biblically marriage represented the union of God and humanity. When we view Petruchio through this lens and see him as a Christ archetype there is so much more to Katharine’s conversion to submission and obedience and her redemption from shrewish spinster. I know, I know this can be hard to swallow nevertheless consider that obedience to true principle is not bondage but instead the key to liberty and freedom. For example, if we obey our running routine we are free to run faster and farther than if we chose to skip our workout. When we master obedience it becomes our powerful servant. Are there ways Kate is actually served when she chooses to hold her tongue and submit to another’s will? Thoughts to ponder as we watch the story so beautifully unfold in this colorful backdrop of India.

So sit back and relax as Take Note Troupe shares this timeless tale of liberation from the labels that limit and redemption from the regret of the past. To her Kate!
