The Year of the Eucharist

October 10, 2004 – October 29, 2005

“The Eucharist: source and summit of the life and mission of the Church” - Pope John Paul II

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 10, 2004 - On the feast of Corpus Christ, John Paul II announced a "Year of the Eucharist" that the Catholic Church will observe from October 2004 to October 2005. The Pope explained that the Year of the Eucharist will begin with the International Eucharistic Congress, Oct. 10-17, in Guadalajara, Mexico. The year "will end with the next ordinary assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which will be held in the Vatican from October 2-29, 2005. John Paul II, who reminded the faithful that the "Church lives from the Eucharist," has made this sacrament the focus of his pastoral concern, as reflected in his 2003 encyclical, "Ecclesia de Eucharistia."

Coming Soon, October 2004: Human Resources Department to Launch “iCOD” to all TCDSB employees,

under Ontario Regulation 521/01

Offence Declarations Process Ontario Regulation 521/01 required all school boards to collect a criminal history of all existing and new employees by July 31, 2003. In addition to this requirement, this legislation further required school boards to collect offence declarations from all employees by September 1 annually, commencing 2004. In order to initiate this undertaking and on-going annual process, the Board has engaged in the purchase of an easy to use, Internet accessible, web encrypted application called iCOD that will enable employees to submit their offence declarations in a highly secure, private and confidential manner. They may do so in the privacy of their homes, at their place of work or at a public library through any web browser that supports 128-bit encryption as used in PC banking. The iCOD solution was developed by SRB International, the IT vendor that supports all ECNO (Education Computing Network of Ontario) applications and the Board’s Trillium Student Information System. iCOD is currently being utilized by nine other school boards in the province. As well, the OESC (Ontario Education Services Corporation) has worked very closely with SRB International throughout the development and completion of this application. On behalf of the Board, Deloitte Consulting Services has audited and validated the security features and effectiveness of this application. This was completed in August 2004. Board access to offence declarations will only be available to the Superintendent of Human Resources and Legal Counsel. The iCOD application will be opened up to all staff, including those on leave or secondment, starting in October 2004. Offence declarations must be completed by all staff. On-line help, the Help Desk and the HR department will be available to assist staff. Further instructions will be provided via the Director’s Bulletin and e-mail in early October.

Remembering students of Beslan, Russia JUSTIN SKINNER North York Mirror Oct. 3, 2004 Horrified by last month's hostage crisis in a Russian school that saw more than 300 people killed, including 156, students at North York's Our Lady of Assumption are sending their wishes, thoughts and prayers to the affected community.

Chechen and Inqush rebels took over the school in Beslan, Russia, on Sept. 1, trapping hundreds of students and school staff inside. The crisis ended with a massive shootout on Sept. 3, but the aftershock continues to affect the Russian community.

POEMS

Students in each of the Our Lady of Assumption's classes wrote poems and other messages to add to a large bulletin board showing the suffering of those in the Beslan school.

"It was such a tragic event and it was sad that it was kind of swept under the carpet," said Our Lady of Assumption teacher Margaret Dovigo. "After 9/11, everyone poured their feelings out for the tragedy, but there didn't seem to be as much thought devoted to this incident."

Dovigo helped rally the students at the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue area school into action, though most were more than willing to do what they could to help out without much prompting.

"The incident really touched us, being a school ourselves," Dovigo said. "This tragedy has touched so many people. Anyone who has children, works with children or has the least bit of empathy has to be horrified at what happened."

Our Lady of Assumption's bulletin board consists of a large Russian flag adorned with newspaper clippings and a collection of thoughts and prayers from students from the school. They intend to send it over to Beslan along with funds raised from a dress-down day being held by the school.

PICTURES

"Some classes drew pictures, others wrote poems expressing their wishes and feelings for the students and teachers who were involved in the hostage-taking, but everyone was eager to contribute," Dovigo said. "Every single class participated, which really brought our school together."

In addition, the project has helped the students gain more of an appreciation for world affairs and showed the students' compassion for their fellow humans in distant corners of the globe, she said. "I'm very proud of what our students have done," Dovigo said. "They had an understanding of the terrible tragedy that took place and wanted to do something to show that their thoughts were with the people in Russia."

Once the money has been raised from the school's dress-down day, Our Lady of Assumption will send the package to Beslan.

Construction for high school set to begin Blaze buster TAMARA SHEPHARD, Etobicoke Guardian, Oct. 6, 2004 Eight years later, a $29-million school flush with natural light, large classrooms and open spaces for students to congregate will soon be home to 900 Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary students. The award-winning architectural design respects previous improvements at Colonel Samuel Smith Park, and includes "view corridors" to Lake Ontario and Meaford Avenue as indicated in the city's urban design guidelines, project architect Paul Stevens said. Stevens presented his architectural plans for the new school Monday night to parents on Redmond's Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC) following news the project had received a political green light.

Last week, Toronto Council granted approval for the city to enter into lease agreements with the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) for 2.4 hectares of property known as the Lakeshore Grounds.

"We want to be more excited, but we can't quite believe it," one mom said in response to the news and the plans Monday night. Some parents expressed frustration at the time it took to get the approvals, saying some of their children won't graduate from, or even attend, the new three-storey school before finishing their high school careers. Stevens expects the school to be completed in May 2006, in time for fall classes. Shovels should hit the ground within weeks.

Angelo Sangiorgio, superintendent of facilities with the TCDSB, undertook the project eight years ago, wading through an inches-high pile of cross-leases on the property, he said. Two leases held up the project, he said -- one for the school's parking lot, the other for a 400-metre running track, property held under easement by Humber College.

Sangiorgio recognized the efforts of Ward 6 (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) councillor Mark Grimes and TCDSB Ward 2 trustee Ann Andrachuk in expediting the process this year to move the project forward. The work was worth the effort, he said: "You won't find another site like this anywhere in Toronto."

The new school will be located adjacent to the green lawns and towering trees of Colonel Samuel Smith Park, The Assembly Hall and Humber College buildings. "Like Humber College, it (Redmond) becomes likes a series of buildings in a park," Stevens said.

The school will feature clay brick in a terra cotta colour similar to Humber College buildings' façade, and large horizontal clear glass windows to "capture panoramic views across the park." Located on a corner site of the Lakeshore Grounds, "discreet parking" will be located on the west side of the building, he said. An additional 70 parking spaces will be situated some 50 metres away at the power plant. An existing apple orchard, of interest to local environmentalists, is located primarily outside the school board's property, Stevens noted.

Last year, Stevens' firm ZAS Architects won a U.S. Design Share award in the design concept category for Redmond's design, describing it as "collegiate", "compact" and "dynamic", he said. Portables are not in the new school's future, Sangiorgio said, in response to a question from a parent. The school board has a right to expand by 70,000 square feet with a "permanent building," he said. "Portables on that site would be a difficult sell," he said. "The site just wouldn't permit it."

But new programs will complement the high school's new design, Redmond principal Dianne Parwicki said in an interview before the meeting. Hockey, rugby and lacrosse are among the offerings.

"Currently, a number of people in the area spend lots of money to send their children to private schools for arts and sports. We want to give them the opportunity to send their children to a Catholic school without paying for that additional programming," she said. The new Redmond principal said staff had been "very demoralized up until now, with the promise of 'next year, next year.'"

For 18 years, the separate board has leased the former Alderwood Collegiate on Valermo Drive from the Toronto public school board. The 50-year-old school's physical condition continues to deteriorate. "It's looking very decrepit," Parwicki said. "It's not painted, the windows are poorly insulated, so it's very cold in winter. Nobody wants to be educated under such conditions."

Father Redmond school is finally getting new home TAMARA SHEPHARD Etobicoke Guardian Oct. 3, 2004 Father John Redmond Catholic Secondary School is finally getting a new home. Last week, Toronto Council granted approval for the city to enter into lease agreements with the separate school board for portions of property known as the Lakeshore Grounds. Board officials and the school community report a new facility is desperately needed. Presently, the board leases a public board school on Valermo Drive that is aging.

Issuance of a building permit for a new school building is imminent, Toronto Catholic District School Board superintendent of facilities Angelo Sangiorgio said in an interview. "Everyone's ecstatic," Sangiorgio said in response to city council's approval. "The community is very pleased."

A meeting to discuss plans for the new school with the school community will be held at Father Redmond tomorrow night.

The new Father John Redmond secondary school will be built adjacent to Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning's south campus. More than 700 students attend the Alderwood high school.

Ward 6 (Etobicoke-Lakeshore) Councillor Mark Grimes inherited the Father Redmond file after last fall's municipal election. Grimes called the matter "an entangled mess" in an interview, adding he approached both the city commissioner's and the mayor's office to expedite the project.

The development also includes the construction of a much-needed community children's facility in the Lakeshore. Humber Institute recently opened its new 400-bed residence on a site adjacent to building site for Father John Redmond.
