The first twenty years of life are marked by novelty and intensity. The first word, the first insecure step, the first day in school, the first friendship, the first love; these are the years when we are discovering ourselves, the surrounding world, forming our visions of future, and ways to fulfill them. The initial years in the life of a scientific institution are similar: the first years of discovering its own identity, finding the space in the scientific community, the formation of research teams, the first projects, but also the first evaluation of the institute and confrontation with the results of peer institutes. The need for a national institution, focusing on research in zoology and associated scientific disciplines, was fulfilled in 1990, when based on the initiative of several researchers, mainly from the Institute of Experimental Biology and Ecology, Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), the Institute of Zoology SAS was founded. The first 20 years of its existence were notable for the consistent increase in professional quality of scientific workers, improvement of equipment and material furnishing, and frequent participation in international cooperation through scientific projects. Currently, the Institute of Zoology SAS produces high quality scientific publications comparable with those of well-known European or international institutes focusing on zoological research. The high scientific value of publications produced by the research staff is demonstrated by the Impact Factor (IF) ratio; the average IF of our publications is almost double the median in zoology. The potential of the institute is corroborated by its scientific output, ability to obtain research projects and grants, but also by continuing extension of laboratory space and acquisition of state-of-the-art laboratory devices. After 20 years of existence of the Institute of Zoology SAS, we can state that the extensive faithful work and effort of researchers as well as unyielding perseverance brought the well-deserved success. The institute is a valued member of the family of academic institutes. For all this, the words of sincere gratitude and deep appreciation belong to all the present and past staff. I wish all the employees of the Institute of Zoology SAS a lot of success, creativity, and optimal social and economic conditions for work and development of the institute in the years to come. This publication is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute of Zoology and includes its structure, personal representation, main scienti! c activities and results during the last ten years (2000 – 2009).

The Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences was established in 1990, after transformation and division of the Institute of Experimental Biology & Ecology, Slovak Academy of Sciences. It originally consisted of three departments: Soil Zoology, Ecosozology & Monitoring and Zoocenology. In 1991, the Departments of Ichthyology and Hydrobiology (formerly Institute of Fishery Research and Hydrobiology) were integrated into the Institute of Zoology. In 1993, the Institute was extended by inclusion of the Department of Entomology (formerly belonging to the Institute of Experimental Phytopathology and Entomology, Slovak Academy of Sciences) and Department of Vertebrate Ecology (formerly part of the Institute of Agricultural Landscape Ecology, Slovak Academy of Sciences). The Department of Virus Ecology which included several employees of the Institute of Virology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, was established in 1995. Its transformation later resulted in the constitution of a joint department of the Institutes of Virology and Zoology. At the end of 1995, Insitute of Zoology SAS had 6 departments and this structure maintained till May 2008 when the organization structure was changed. Recently, IZ SAS consists of 3 sections which re# ect main research streams provided by the institute.

The scienti! c programme of the institute is based on the study, analysis and interpretation of taxonomy, chorology, ecology, ethology, animal physiology, parasitology and the problems of zoonoses. The subjects of animal society structure and its changes within ecosystems by the di" erent rates of human in# uence are studied. Long–term monitoring of the Slovak biota is carried out.

The spectrum of studied vertebrate and invertebrate groups is broad. The list contains small mammals, birds, amphibia, ! shes, several groups of insects, spiders, crustaceans, mites, parasitic arthropods, molluscs, etc.

Applications of the results of basic research to gain protection of the environment and information for agriculture, forestry and health services are an important part of the institutional activities.

Currently, is there a link among the various research groups of the Institute? We are deeply devoted to the study of living organisms in the world which is profoundly in# uenced by us. The main mission of the Institute of Zoology can be summarized as follows:

A study of animal biodiversity and animal genomes in the dynamic changes of the environment with the aim to understand recent trends in advance, to prevent the destruction and to serve for future human comfort.

Scienti) c Sections

Section of Animal Ecology

Scope

The dominant activity of the Section of Animal Ecology is investigation the processes that control the distribution and abundance of terrestrial and aquatic animals. The main areas of focus are: terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates (Arthropoda – Arachnida: Mesostigmata; Entognatha: Collembola; Insecta: Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera; Malacostraca: Decapoda; Mollusca – Bivalvia) as well as vertebrates (Chordata: Osteichthyes, Sauropsida, Aves). Ecological processes are investigated at di" erent geographical (region, landscape and habitat) and organismal (DNA, proteins, individuals, populations within species and species communities) levels. Except for the attempt to understand recent ecological processes, phylogeography in insects and freshwater ! shes and paleobiogeography in insects, molluscs and freshwater ! shes strive to explain the geographical patterns of genetic variability and divergence of species from the historical perspective. At the organismal level, the main aim is to understand processes underlying the structure and dynamics of populations within species as well as the interactions between them, employing freshwater communities of invertebrates (zooplankton and zoobenthos), freshwater ! shes, reptiles and birds as study models. Another important activity of the Section of Animal Ecology is the research focussed on selected problems of evolutionary ecology, the goal of which is to understand the interactions between individuals and their environment in the context of evolution and maximization of the individual’s reproductive success. Behavioural ecology, ecophysiology and immunoecology belong to the dominant areas investigated within the framework of evolutionary ecology, using spiders, mantids, reptiles and birds

as model systems for the topics of sexual selection (mate choice, sperm competition), life history theory, and host-parasite interactions. An important part of research is the application of ! ndings of the e" ects of naturally occurring abiotic and biotic factors on population distribution, abundance and dynamics for nature conservation, with speci! c taxa (zooplankton, zoobenthos, arthropods, molluscs and birds) used as bioindicator systems. The e" ect of anthropogenic factors (habitat loss and fragmentation, construction of waterworks, agricultural activities) on the distribution, abundance and genetic variability of populations is also studied in line with nature conservation. The members of the section participate in the implementation of the directives related to the protection of habitats and species. In order to address the speci! c ecological questions, the methods of taxonomy, geography, geology, hydrobiology, mathematics, biochemistry, physics, botany, animal physiology and molecular biology are routinely employed by the members of the Section of Animal Ecology.

Section of Medical Zoology

Scope

Research activities of the Section of Medical Zoology are directed towards several areas. The investigation of host – parasite – pathogen relationships is the most important ! eld. Small mammals (Rodentia, Insectivora) and birds (mainly Passeriformes and Coraciiformes) represent the model groups of hosts. The studies are focused on the analysis of parasite – host relationships of several ectoparasite groups (Ixodida, Mesostigmata, Siphonaptera, Anoplura, Diptera) to small mammals and birds. In addition, endoparasites (blood parasites, helmints) of small mammals are investigated. Parasite host speci! cities are evaluated and the in# uence of sex, age and population densities of the hosts on parameters of infestation (abundance, prevalence) are analysed. Investigations of the ecology of ticks and tick–borne pathogens are among the other important activities. Studies are also directed towards biologically active compounds in salivary glands of hematophagous arthropods (mainly ticks) and their role in modulation of host hemostasis and immunity and in pathogen transmission. Tick salivary compounds are explored for vaccine targets that could be used against

ticks and would block pathogen transmission from the vector to the host. Studies on the role of small mammals as reservoirs for a number of pathogens in natural foci of diseases are carried out. In cooperation with other institutes in Slovakia and abroad and by using various methods (serology, cultivation, molecular diagnostics) the role of mammals as reservoirs of hantaviruses, chlamydiae, leptospirae, borreliae, protozoa and several groups of helminths is studied. Pathogen genetic variability from di" erent biological sources and di" erent geographical areas is analysed and evaluated. Study of the richness of species of mites (Mesostigmata) in Slovakia and their taxonomical, ecological and zoogeographical aspects are also among the research activities of the Section. Habitat preference in mites, their hypsometric distribution, relationships to hosts and nests are investigated. Studies containing identi! cation keys, description of the recorded taxa, revisions of unclear species and ecological and chronological evaluation are gradually elaborated.

Section of Molecular and Applied Zoology

Scope

Scientists of the Section of Molecular and Applied Zoology study functions of neuroendocrine and secretory organs during the development of model insect species and ticks. They utilize various biochemical and molecular methods for the identi! cation of bioactive and antibacterial peptides from relevant organs. A combination of multiple molecular, immunohistochemical and electrophysiological techniques has been used to study expression and function of these peptides and their corresponding genes. PCR methods have been used for molecular analysis of selected insect taxons. Discovery of novel endocrine system producing ecdysis triggering hormones has leaded to establish the working group focusing mainly on functional analysis of complex steroid-peptide-receptor cascade controlling insect ecdysis. Moreover this research group conducts a comprehensive study on neuropetides in the silkworm Bombyx mori and the hard ticks (Ixodidae). Techniques of reverse genetics (RNAi, transgenic insect lines) are currently applied to elucidate functions of speci! c bioactive peptides and their receptors in the model species of insects (B. mori and Drosophila melanogaster) and hard ticks (Ixodes spp. and Rhipicephalus appendiculatus). Next scienti! c group of the Section is focused on the identi! cation of di" erent insect active compounds. Insects produce variety of biologically active compounds, including hormones, defensive substances and venoms. Maggot therapy – the treatment with the # y larvae – is another good example of the utilizing of bio-molecules produced by insects to cure patients su" ering

from chronic wounds which frequently result in amputation. Maggot therapy is carefully controlled, arti! cially induced myiasis, in which the medical practitioner aims to balance the positive e" ect of maggot activity on necrotic tissue (benign myiasis) against their potentially negative e" ects on healthy tissues (malign myiasis). The principal aim of this research is to analyze physiological and biochemical merit of saprophagous # ies saliva and other secrets/excretes to the healing process of chronic non-healing wounds (diabetic foot, venous ulcers, etc.) and to establish maggot debridement therapy (MDT) as the standard method for the treatment of chronic non-healing wounds in Slovakia. Next important activity of this Section is the utilization of mass insect rearing for agricultural purposes. Mass breeding of the # y Musca domestica represents an important and very e" ective approach for biodegradation of manure produced by domestic animals. The main objective of this research was to establish a sustainable, alternative method for the management of slurry and manure. In order to do so a natural decomposition process of animal organic matter is applied in order to achieve industrial scale decomposition. This decomposistion process is carried out through a series of dipterans that are capable of transforming slurry and manure into a high quality organic fertilizer to be used for soil correction. Next activity of the Section is focused on the sterilization of mass bred tse-tse # ies Glossina sp., used for eradication of these important vectors of pathogens causing serious diseases of cattle and humans in Africa.
