Established in 1842 in the Episcopal tradition, Saint Mary’s is the fourth oldest girls’ boarding andday school in the country. Today, the School sustains a 100% acceptance rate to selectivecolleges and universities around the world.

The Director of Development is the school’s chief fundraising officer, serving as a high-profileambassador representing the Head of School, the Institutional Leadership Team, and the Board ofTrustees to alumnae, parents, grandparents, foundations, and other current and prospectivesupporters. She/he also provides leadership and guidance managing a current team of 5-6 full-time professional advancement staff. This is an ideal role for the experienced, successfuladvancement professional who thrives in a school that honors tradition as it moves confidentlytoward its 175th anniversary.

Position Overview – Director of Development

The Director of Development reports to the Head of School (HOS) and works closely with theInstitutional Leadership Team (ILT) and Board of Trustees (BOT) to advance the Saint Mary’sSchool mission through the successful implementation of robust fundraising initiatives andeffective relationship building with all constituent groups. She/he will provide visionary leadershipfor the Development Staff, assume responsibility for managing and expanding an existing donorbase of alumnae, parents, grandparents, and community members, and excel at the skillfulbuilding and maintaining of constituent relationships, both internally and externally.

Areas of General Responsibility:

General

Oversees a comprehensive development operation, including capital campaigns, majorgifts, annual giving, planned giving, foundation fundraising, constituent relations, donoreducation, and special events;

Designs and implements annual and long-range development plans;

Develops and manages development and capital campaign budgets;

Partners with Business Office to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of financial data.

Fundraising

Oversees the development and implementation of all programs within the Annual Fund;

Leads major campaign initiatives;

Oversees special-event fundraising programs;

Oversees the development of a comprehensive planned-giving program;

Facilitates the major gifts work of the HOS, BOT, Development Staff, and volunteers;

Oversees all major gift solicitations, maintaining a specific caseload of assigned prospectsand assuming a solicitor’s role when necessary and appropriate;

Collaborates with Development Staff to develop individualized solicitation strategies forprospects.

Constituent Relations

Leads staff and volunteers in developing and maintaining key long-term relationships withdonors and prospects;

Works with alumnae councils, parent councils, and other volunteer committees to createpositive and mutually beneficial relationships;

Oversees donor cultivation and recognition activities as well as other development-relatedfunctions.

Development Office

Provides oversight and support of Development Office Staff and cultivates a culture ofcollaboration and teamwork;

Creates office systems to support all development projects and operations;

Supervises donor and gift record-keeping;

Coordinates development research activities;

Oversees the management of databases and all records, files, and gift processing;

Oversees accurate reporting of data to school-related agencies, e.g., NAIS, CASE, etc.;

Oversees the process of issuing pledge reminders and acknowledgements.

Board of Trustees

Works with the Development Committee of the BOT and the HOS to develop strategies tomeet aggressive fundraising goals;

Attends all Board meetings and committee meetings as assigned;

Develops fundraising training for Trustees and other leadership volunteers;

Assumes responsibility for all Development reports to the Board, including the annualcomprehensive Development Report;

Assists the HOS and Governance Committee with researching and recommending potentialnew members.

Additional Specific Responsibilities

Partners with ILT and HOS in implementing new strategic plan;

Launches a major campaign initiative within the next three years;

Doubles the Annual Fund over the next three to five years;

In collaboration with ILT and HOS, integrates fundraising initiatives into larger 175thanniversary celebrations (May 2016-May 2018);

Leads initiatives to expand leadership giving;

Develops a robust donor education program that reaches all donor constituents andcreates a culture of philanthropy across all constituent groups;

Serves on Marketing Team and contributes to the design of all advancement initiatives.

Position Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree;

Minimum of ten years’ development experience working within a comprehensivedevelopment program;

Strong commitment to single-sex education and experience working with female donors;

Commitment to school’s mission;

Experience in planning, leading, and managing large-scale development projects, includingcoordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting onprogress to senior leadership team members and BOT;

Evidence of solid experience in major/planned gift solicitation and volunteer management;

Evidence of being results orientated; proven track record in setting and achievingambitious goals;

Skills in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising;ability to convey complex ideas through brief, simple materials; experience and credibilitywhen presenting materials to internal and external audiences;

Development Overview*

In June 2012, Saint Mary’s School concluded its largest campaign to date, the $30 million BeyondImagination Capital Campaign. The campaign funded a major renovation of Smedes Hall, adesignated Raleigh Historical Landmark; and created a new athletic field, as well as funded theconstruction of eight new townhomes for residential faculty. In addition to the investments madein facilities, campaign funds also supported implementation of a one-to-one laptop program.Remaining funds were added to the endowment, with a current estimated value of $20 million.

Since the campaign’s conclusion, about 26% of Saint Mary’s annual operating budget is fundedthrough contributed income. Annual giving raises $1.1-1.2 million and alumnae participation hasconsistently performed in the low- to mid-20th percentile with an average alumna gift of about$400. Leadership is unwavering in its confidence that alumnae annual giving over the next fewyears could double and lay the groundwork for Saint Mary’s next campaign, given what is known

There is an 8:1 student-to-faculty ratio withan average class size of 12.5 students. 32% of students receive need-based financial aid. Average teaching experience for faculty is 15 years.83% of faculty hold advanced degrees in their fieldsfrom universities including Harvard, Yale, Duke,Northwestern, University of North Carolina at ChapelHill, North Carolina State, Emory and others.

The Sarah Graham Kenan Library offers more than33,000 cataloged holdings, including print andelectronic books and media. In addition, students haveaccess to current print periodicals, an extensive boundperiodical collection providing great historic primary

History:

Founded in 1842 by the Rev. Aldert Smedes, an Episcopal priest,Saint Mary’s School has operated continuously on the same siteever since. With the support of the Episcopal Diocese of North

During the Civil War, Saint Mary’s became a safe haven for relativesof both Union and Confederate generals, including Robert E. Lee’sdaughter and the family of Jefferson Davis. Smedes kept the schooloperating throughout the war. In 1865, General Tecumseh

Sherman’s Union troops camped in The Grove on front campus, and Sherman visited Smedes inthe main building.

Today, Saint Mary's School is an independent, Episcopal,college-preparatory, boarding, and day school dedicated toacademic excellence and personal achievement for girls ingrades 9-12. Saint Mary's School remains true to AldertSmedes' time-honored mission of providing an excellenteducation for young women.

Saint Mary’s residential 23-acre campus is within easy driving distance of world-renownedResearch Triangle Park and the Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Raleigh is the capital of the state of North Carolina and is known as the "City of Oaks" for its

The twentieth century saw the opening of the Research Triangle Park in 1959, one of thecountry's largest and most successful research parks, and a major center in the United Statesfor high-tech and biotech research, as well as advanced textile development. With the jobs itcreated the region and city saw a large influx of population, making it one of the fastest growingcommunities in the United States by the early 21st century. In addition, the city is a major retailshipping point for eastern North Carolina and a wholesale distributing point for the groceryindustry. Raleigh's industrial base also includes banking/financial services; electrical, medical,electronic and telecommunications equipment; clothing and apparel; food processing; paperproducts; and pharmaceuticals.

The city is home to numerous cultural, educational, and historic sites. The Duke Energy Center forthe Performing Arts in Downtown Raleigh features three theater venues and serves as the homefor the North Carolina Symphony and the Carolina Ballet. Walnut Creek Amphitheatre is a largemusic amphitheater located in Southeast Raleigh. Leadership:

Monica M. Gillespie, Ph.D.Head of School

In May 2012, the Board of Trustees of Saint Mary’s Schoolannounced the appointment of Dr. Monica M. Gillespie as the13th Head of School.

Dr. Gillespie brings to Saint Mary’s nine years of head of schoolexperience, a passion for educating girls, deep appreciation forthe Episcopal heritage of Saint Mary’s School, and a distinguishedbackground in education.

Previously, Dr. Gillespie served as the head of school at St. Paul’sSchool for Girls (SPSG), an Episcopal all-girls school outsideBaltimore with 415 girls in grades 5-12. While at SPSG, working

with her leadership team, she carefully navigated the difficult recession years, posting operatingsurpluses each year of her six-year tenure. She oversaw the expansion of a sister school programto include seven schools around the world. Additionally, she expanded the arts and worldlanguage curricula, made strides in efficiency and in program to establish SPSG as a MarylandGreen School, focused on girls’ leadership development, and increased philanthropic support.

Prior to serving St. Paul’s School for Girls, Monica was, for three years, head of school at St.Luke’s Lutheran School in Culpeper, Virginia. Earlier in her career, for a total of eight years, shetaught, coached, advised, and served in the residential communities at two single-sex boardingschools, Westover School in Connecticut and Woodberry Forest School in Virginia.

Dr. Gillespie earned her B.A., M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Virginia, with herdoctoral dissertation focused on independent school leadership. As an undergraduate she playedvarsity soccer, lettering all four years. She currently serves on the board of the NationalAssociation of Episcopal Schools (NAES).
