West Houston Medical Center Podiatric Surgical Residency Program (PMSR/RRA) was established in 1975, originally know as Harris County Podiatric Surgical Residency Program. The program has graduated over 150 podiatric surgeons. The program consists of over 40 active podiatric attendings and 20 surgeons of various medical specialties, including plastics, general, and orthopedic surgery. We are a high volume program with an average of over 3500 foot and ankle cases per year. Many of the faculty serve in leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels. These include the TPMA, APMA, ACFAS, and ABPS. We are located in Houston, Texas, the fourth largest US city with numerous educational and social activities. Houston houses the largest medical center in the world.

Hunt Regional Medical Center offers a PMSR program with an emphasis on forefoot and rearfoot reconstructive surgery, and trauma. Hunt Regional is located just outside of the DFW metroplex, with residents participating in surgical cases both in Greenville and through the metroplex giving residents a wide variety of cases, including 35 supervising physicians with whom to gain knowledge from. Secondary institutions include Baylor Garland, Baylor Irving, Breckanridge Surgery Center, Irving-Coppell Surgical Hospital, Las Colinas Surgery Center, Medical City Dallas, North Central Surgery Center, Baylor Surgicare, Park Cities Surgery Center, Plano Surgery Center, Rockwall Surgery Center, Legacy Surgery Center, Faith Surgical Center and UTSW Medical Center-Parkland. Our program offers residents the opportunity to complete missionary work in San Miguel Mexico and support our Hospital Residency Clinic in Greenville. Academics include weekly meetings, bimonthly practical labs in suturing, ankle fixation, forefoot osteotomies, external fixation, taping, strapping, and saw bones, monthly journal club, cadaver labs, workshops, and Present lectures. Residents also attend post-op clinic every Monday as a chance to follow patients through their post operative course, as well as long term follow up. Clinical work also grants residents the opportunity to provide patients with routine care. While on call, residents will see adult and pediatric patients presenting with open fractures of all kinds, including ankle fractures, Lis Francs fracture/dislocations, calcaneal fractures, diabetic infections, etc., with all ankle trauma offered to podiatry. Surgical cases include bunions, hammertoes, lesser ray surgery, I&D’s, ankle fractures, ankle arthroscopy, Charcot reconstruction, pediatric and adult flatfoot reconstruction, tendon transfers, amputations, Achilles repairs and more. Rotations in medicine, emergency room, pathology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, and wound care are done at Hunt Regional. HRMC will have a completely equipped skills lab in 2013. Salary Structure: PGY3 $46,000.00, PGY2 $44,000.00, PGY1 $42,000.00 annually. Benefits include health insurance, meals, lab coats, book stipend up to $500.00 annually, CME up to $2,500.00 annually, including annual ACFAS meeting to present posters/papers. The podiatric surgical residency training program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) has been a fully integrated program within a state funded academic health science center for over 40 years. Podiatric Medicine & Surgery is a Division in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

The primary locations for training are the University Health System (County Hospital), South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Texas Diabetes Institute, Medical Arts & Research Center and all the private hospitals and surgery centers where members of our clinical faculty who are in private practice work.

The training involves an extensive combination of inpatient and outpatient services with excellent surgical training in diabetic foot and ankle surgery, trauma, podopediatrics, and elective/reconstructive forefoot, rearfoot and ankle surgery. Our focus is to train podiatric physicians and surgeons keeping in mind the mission of an academic health center, which is teaching, research, and service.

Individual assessment of residents’ performance is based on six core competencies: interpersonal skills, professionalism, patient care, knowledge, system-based practice, and practice-based learning and improvement.

John Peter Smith Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center providing extensive training in rearfoot reconstruction, foot and ankle trauma, amputations, forefoot surgeries as well as the management of diabetic wounds and complications. JPS has over 500 inpatient hospital beds and more than 100 Emergency Room beds, our residents manage patients throughout their course of treatment. As a resident you will have unique opportunity to provide care for our patients throughout the continuum of their medical needs. Handling all isolated foot and ankle issues, our residents see patient in both the Emergency Room and Outpatient Clinic, actively participate in their surgeries, post-operative recovery and ultimately return them back to their normal lives. The Podiatry Residency is based in the Department of Orthopedics at John Peter Smith Hospital with 2 residents per year, 3 full-time staff and more than 200 outpatient clinic encounters weekly. We also have a unique relationship with orthopedics allowing our Orthopedics residents to rotate on our service to receive their foot/ankle experience. During their training at JPS our residents also have the opportunity to branch out to physicians in the Dallas-Fort Worth area for additional procedures.
