From Baltimore Washington International (BWI) Thurgood Marshall Airport Take I-195 westbound to I-95. Take I-95 south to Route 100 westbound. Continue on Route 100 to Route 29 northbound to I-70. Take I70 west to Route 32 exit. From the exit ramp, turn LEFT to Route 32 south and proceed about ½ mile to the traffic light at Route 144 Frederick Road. Make LEFT onto Route 144 Frederick Road (eastbound). Proceed about a mile to Sand Hill Road, and make a LEFT. Proceed about 0.7 miles, just over the I-70 bridge, to Scott Wheeler Drive. Make RIGHT, follow road/driveway into the complex. Academic building is to the left as you enter, straight ahead once in the parking lot.

From Baltimore City: Get to I-70 westbound by taking I95 south to I-695, the Baltimore beltway. Take I-695 exit west/northbound. From I-695 take I-70 west. Proceed as above.

From the South: From either I-295, I-95, or Route 29, take Route 32 exit and proceed West/North. Continue until the light at Route 144 Frederick Road, just before I-70. Facility Description The 46 acre James N. Robey Public Safety Training Center is home to both the How-ard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services and the Howard County Police Department Education and Training sections. The facilities provide classrooms, sim-ulation buildings, simulation props, and designated training areas for use in educa-tional programs for Howard County and other public safety personnel. There is also a large conference room available to host a range of meetings, seminars, and con-ferences.

During 2008, the Administration Building classrooms hosted 1,688 fire department bookings, for a total of 12,721 hours of classes. The Academic & Administration building houses ten DFRS and five HCPD offices, ten classrooms, four break-out rooms, a confer-ence center, a computerized driving simulator, a human patient simulator lab, two computer labs, a state-of-the-art weight and physical fitness training area, a defensive tactics instructional area, instructor and student showers and locker rooms, equipment storage rooms, and student/kitchen break areas.

Students have access to bathrooms, vending machines, a refrigerator, break areas, and lunch areas. Student bathrooms are located in the Academic building on the first floor, and in the Firegrounds classroom. There are also student locker rooms for those students that are enrolled in programs that authorize their use.

Classrooms vary in size, but each is designed to provide both students and instructors a comfortable learning environment. Instructors have access to a teaching computer with Microsoft Office 2010 software (including Power-Point), computer image projection, document image projection, fixed and lapel style microphones, Internet access, DVD and VCR projection, limited television projection, and a StarBoard “smart board” screen.

Student seating and desks in most cases has laptop power and wire-less internet.

There are several props available on the campus that allow for realistic scenario and simulation training.

The Kidde Fire Simulation Building is a computerized, propane driven, fire simulation structure that will allow for simulation of class A firefighting in four rooms, and includes space for simulated operations to include stand-pipe evolutions, ladder evolutions, electrical investigation, and other op-erational simulations. The building requires a knowledgeable simulator technician to be present when being utilized for fire simulation, in addi-tion to other Ignition officers and personnel to ensure safety and comply with department policy and NFPA guidelines. Additionally, outdoor props are available to provide live-fire simulation, including a grill, automobile, compressed gas cylinders, and Christmas tree.

An additional Fire Grounds Classroom building that houses an additional classroom (able to be used by students in protective gear), a rappelling and rope rescue prop, an indoor training area that can facilitate group practical training in foul-weather and the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), and elevator training prop, and storage of instructor protective gear, an air cascade, and other critical training equipment.

Additional training buildings are available for simulation, and include a gar-den-style apartment building, a 7-11 convenience store, a Columbia Bank, an outdoor alley/street, as well as other interior rooms that can be used to simulate various occupancy types. Some simulation areas have the capaci-ty to view and record IP video during the simulations.

Other training props that are available on campus include a breathing apparatus and search techniques maze, an area for auto extrication training, a driving practice area, and static props for confined space and trench rescue simulation scenarios.

Emergency response apparatus is currently housed in a large storage building on the campus.

The facility is available for use to support training that impacts public safety in Howard County, Maryland. Scheduling for use of the facility is handled through the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services or the Howard County Police Department, depending on the purpose of the course.

Teaching podiums have computers with Inter-net access, MS Powerpoit, microphones, re-mote clickers.
