the gift of adversity

from the chairman

My children, 24, 22, and 13 years of age are asking me more and more about success. They are curious how to be successful in life, love, and as a professional in their chosen career. I challenge them to remember our core understanding is that success is a process; not an end point or an amount of money or things. Processes have outcomes. Over time, as we refine our success process, those outcomes become more about celebrations, and less about set-backs. So it is important to remember that setbacks, hardships, being buffeted around by life, are a necessary part of learning to be successful!

I love the way Lyndell Hetrick Holtz describes it, “In 1998, I was oblivious to the fact that suffering offers us opportunities to find that God does not fit into the small box we try to keep Him in. I despised and kicked at the events in my life that might have led me to know Him

more fully. ...I refused to recognize that is in our suffering that we are best instructed about God’s true character. As we come to learn who He really is, we come to trust Him more and more as life gets increasingly difficult. Our adversity always leads us back to one question: ‘Can I trust Him, even in this?’”

Adversity humbles us. It refines us. It prompts the need for creativity and perseverance. It deepens the heart and expands the mind. It illustrates hell...a place we do not want to go anymore! We become a little smarter, and most importantly, a little wiser each time.

While I am not sure I could ever actively seek adversity and hard times, perhaps I can learn to embrace adversity and hard times as something that is leading me where I want to go. And, in my life, with a healthy and vital relationship with God, the experience will be that much more rich.

I have shared with most of you the story about my youngest daughter, Sierra. My wife Lisa and I have shared 43 surgeries, and 120 nights per year in the hospital with her leading to her liver transplant on November 26th, 2011. Recently, I told Sierra, as sincerely as I knew how, that I treasure her and all of the setbacks and struggles we have had with her health. They have changed me and my life in ways that I could never imagine. I am a deeper person, and my relationship with God was brought to its pinnacle through the process. I am so thankful for her and the strength and courage she taught me about through her life. I am better because she is in my life.

Business is a tough arena. I compliment each of our members for taking on that challenge. Remember success is a process and every step in the process adds to your treasure chest of experiences. Celebration and Setback… It’s all a part of the process of success in our lives, in our loves, and in our professions.

Our adversity always leads us back to one question: ‘can I trust Him, even in this?’

family and every vehicle as if it were our own...guaranteed!

For those of you who have already successfully started a business and are ready to take the next step, you may be wondering what you can do to help your business grow. There are many ways to do this, 10 of which are outlined below. Choosing the proper one (or ones) for your business will depend on the type of business you own, your available resources, and how much money, time and resources you’re willing to invest all over again. If you’re ready to grow, take a look at these tips.Open another location. This is often the first way business owners approach growth. If you feel confident that your current business location is under control, consider expanding by opening a new location.Offer your business as a franchise or business opportunity. Franchising your business will allow for growth without requiring you to manage the new location. This will help to maximize the time you spend improving your business in other ways, too.License your product. This can be an effective, low-cost growth medium, particularly if you have a service product or branded product. Licensing also minimizes your risk and is low cost in comparison to the price of starting your own company to produce and sell your brand or product. To find a licensing partner,

start by researching companies that provide products or services similar to yours.Form an alliance. Aligning yourself with a similar type of business can be a powerful way to expand quickly.Diversify. Diversifying is an excellent strategy for growth, because it allows you to have multiple streams of income that can often fill seasonal voids and, of course, increase sales and profit margins. Here are a few of the most common ways to diversify:• Sellcomplementaryproductsorservices• Teachadulteducationorothertypesofclasses• Importorexportyoursorothers’products• BecomeapaidspeakerorcolumnistTarget other markets. Your current market is serving you well. Are there others? Probably. Use your imagination to determine what other markets could use your product.Win a government contract. One of the best ways to grow your business is to win business from the government. Work with your local SBA and Small Business Development Center to help you determine the types of contracts available to you.Merge with or acquire another business. Two is always bigger than one. Investigate companies that are similar to yours, or that have offerings that are complementary to yours, and consider the benefits of combining forces or acquiring the company.Expand globally. To do this, you’ll need a foreign distributor who can carry your product and resell it in their domestic markets. You can locate foreign distributors by scouring your city or state for a foreign company with a U.S. representative.Expand to the Internet. Very often, customers discover a business through an online search engine. Be sure that your business has an online presence in order to maximize your exposure.

The Deer Park Chamber of Commerce takes a different approach in October to its regular monthly luncheon by offering its own program. Through Chamber 101, CEO Tim Culp wants to show members what the Chamber could do for them rather than what they can do for the Chamber. The Deer Park Chamber of Commerce has approximately 500 member businesses and individuals which in turn represents more than 14,000 employees.Mr. Culp will speak about our organization and it’s structure. The Chamber is made of up volunteers who are business leaders in the community who invest their time and finances to enhance the economic vitality in Deer Park. Through input from its members and member organizations, the elected board of directors steers the direction and sets goals for the Chamber.Join us on October 24, 2013 at 11:30 am at the Battleground Republic Grill to find out what your chamber can do for you.

1.Buy Local—Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms—continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community These include case studies showing that locally-owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base.

2.Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.

3.Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun—all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust

4.Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less trans-portation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This gener-ally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.

5.Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, pro-vide the most jobs to residents.

6.Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.

7.Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.

8.Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.

9.Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

10.Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic re-search shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entre-preneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

Think local first + Buy local when you can = Being a local!
