MAGIC MILLIONS YEARLING CATALOGUE RELEASED - PAGE 12
Inglis remains committed to conducting
live Great Southern and Melbourne Gold
yearling sales in Victoria next month
despite the state government being
forced into reneging on a planned relaxation of
coronavirus regulations after a sudden spike in
Covid-19 cases in the past week.
Sebastian Hutch, Inglis’ general manager
of bloodstock sales and marketing, yesterday
moved to allay fears that the proposed
Oaklands Junction auctions were in doubt
due to Premier Daniel Andrews’ stern
action at the weekend to clamp down on
the movement of people, particularly in
Melbourne.
Inglis’ Victorian sales complex is located
to the north west of the city in Hume City
Council, one of six local government areas
identified by authorities as a Covid-19
hotspot. Continued on page 2>>

Inglis has been engaging with Hume
City Council to ensure its Oaklands Junction sales proceed where there
are 226 weanlings catalogued for the July 12 Great Southern Sale and
another 454 yearlings entered in the Melbourne Gold auction.
The yearling sale had already been pushed back from April because of
the Australia-wide lockdown caused by the pandemic.
Since the coronavirus crisis
began, Inglis has conducted the
Australian Easter Yearling Sale
and Chairman’s Sale as virtual
auctions, while the industry has
also embraced online technology
to continue to trade bloodstock,
but Hutch was mindful of the
importance of an on-the-ground
market taking place, starting with
the company’s four July sales in
quick succession.
“Inglis has made a huge
investment in technology, which
has been valuable in what has
been a difficult period, but
naturally there’s a huge appetite
for live sales to resume and we’re very much on track for that to be the
case in July,” Hutch told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“We’ve got Covid safe plans that we’ve discussed with relevant
authorities for the sales in NSW and Victoria and we want the sales to go
ahead as we recognise their importance to the market.
“We’re conscious of our responsibilities for people’s safety as well, but
certainly in terms of discussions we’ve had with relevant authorities we’re
very much capable of satisfying their requirements.
“As long as patrons respect the guidelines that are put in place
at the complexes, we’re very confident that the sales will be straight
forward.”
The Riverside Stables-scheduled Australian Easter Yearling Sale
Round 2, the Scone Yearling Sale (July 5) and the Australian Weanling
Sale (July 8) were confirmed as live auctions in May and that still remains
the case, but the increase in the coronavirus infection rate through
community transmission in Victoria heightened vendors’ concerns about
the prospect of the Melbourne sales not being able to go ahead.
Victorian vendor Paul King of Ponderosa Park says buyers would
not be prepared to speculate on higher-end weanlings if they could
be inspected and believes it is imperative that a live auction takes
place.
If the sale was postponed or cancelled, it would put an enormous financial
strain on King and his wife Sue’s business.

“We’d really struggle if we had to hold
onto them all as yearlings because our whole program revolves around
selling them as weanlings,” King said.
“There’s service fees to be paid, we have to breed again this year and
we probably can’t hold that many horses on the farm.
“We have 27 going to Great
Southern including some Gold
yearlings who were supposed to
(be sold in April).
“Everyone knows what it costs
to feed just one horse, let alone if
you’re holding an extra 27 or 28.”
King plans to offer 19
weanlings by sires including Deep
Field (Northern Meteor), More
Than Ready (Southern Halo),
Capitalist (Written Tycoon),
Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) and
Toronado (High Chaparral) with
select sale pedigrees.
He said: “Our business model gives buyers the confidence that we are
sending our very best. We’re not like the bigger guys who just pick through
them and just send the rubbish. With our weanlings, we only sell our best.”
Mane Lodge’s Neil Osborne also has eight weanlings catalogued
for the Great Southern Sale, including a Headwater (Exceed And Excel)
half-sister to the Group 3-placed Lone Eagle (Zoffany), and admitted the
uncertainty surrounding the overall market and the Melbourne auction
was far from ideal.
Osborne, who also trains and operates an agistment property at
Sutton north of Canberra, had specifically targeted Great Southern in
a bid to decrease his numbers to a manageable level before next year’s
yearling sales.

“Looking at the results, I thought the
Great Southern was an exceptional weanling sale and the buying bench
was a lot broader down there than in Sydney,” Osborne said.
There has been a suggestion that the Great Southern and Melbourne
Gold sales could be moved to Inglis’ Sydney complex to alleviate coronavirus
concerns, a move that would be supported by Osborne and King, but Hutch
last night said Oaklands Junction remained the likely venue.
“At this stage, there’s no plan to relocate any sales from Victoria to
NSW,” he said.
“Obviously, we have the capacity to do that if it is absolutely necessary,
but nothing’s happened in the past few days that means we would need
to do that.”
July shapes as a busy period for breeding industry participants with
back-to-back auctions in Sydney and Melbourne before the postponed
Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale takes place later in the month
as a live auction.
“The challenge of the schedule, as it now exists, is that there’s a lot
of horses being sold in a relatively short space of time. We’ve tried to
configure the sales so that it evolves in a smooth fashion,” Hutch said.
“There’s a lot of horses and people are going to have to be very diligent
and very professional in how they get through them in regards to the sales
in NSW and Victoria, or both.
“But it’s going to present positive challenges for people because
there’s the potential for value to
be found and those people who do
their work will find a bargain.
“Similarly, vendors who
present their horses to a high
standard, are well prepared and
are prepared to be as open and
transparent as possible for those
buyers who aren’t in a position to
attend the sale, they will hopefully
get rewarded.”
Meanwhile, people planning
on attending the Easter Round
2 and Scone Yearling Sale at
Riverside Stables in Sydney on July
5 and the Australian Weanling Sale
three days later must pre-register.
Similar protocols will be in force for the Great Southern weanling and
Melbourne Gold sales.

GOLD COAST NATIONAL YEARLING SALE I 27-28 JULY
By Tim Rowe
Aquis Farm will launch the stud career of Group 3-winning
juvenile Bellevue Hill this year with the lightly-raced
sprinter to stand in the Hunter Valley alongside another
son of Pierro (Lonhro), the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)
winner Pierata.
The former Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Bellevue Hill,
who was victorious in the 2019 T L Baillieu Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at
Rosehill, becomes the 19th stallion at Aquis Farm’s burgeoning three-state
stud operation.
Bellevue Hill, one of only two sons of Coolmore’s potential champion
sire-in-waiting Pierro ($137,500) to retire to stud so far, will stand at an
introductory fee of $11,000 (inc GST) at the Murrurundi property in the
Hunter Valley.
Pierata’s first season fee of $44,000 (inc GST) was announced last
month.
Chief executive Tony “Tubba” Williams believes Bellevue Hill
complements Pierata on Aquis Farm’s NSW roster by offering breeders
access to a dominant sire line at an affordable fee.
“To my knowledge, Bellevue Hill, a son of Pierro, is the only Group-
winning two-year-old son of Pierro to go to stud,” Williams said.
“He’s out of an Exceed And Excel mare and he does have Exceed And
Excel attributes. He’s bay in colour, he has a lot of quality and strength.
“He’s got a lot of natural muscle, he’s got a really big hip on him with
a good head and eye. He’s got a lot of attributes that people will really like
and to be a two-year-old sprinting son just offers another dimension from
that sire line.
“We’ve got the two fastest sons of Pierro that are out there.”
Bellevue Hill made an immediate impact on the track by winning his
first start at Canberra by more than five lengths in slick time over 1000
metres before starting well in the market when runner-up to Yes Yes Yes
(Rubick) in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at his second outing.
It was then that he claimed an important stakes race victory at Rosehill
with a dominant two-length win over Strasbourg (I Am Invincible) in the
Baillieu.
Bellevue Hill would race just another four times, all in stakes company,
before being retired earlier this month.
“He beat Strasbourg comfortably in the Baillieu and when Yes Yes Yes
won the Todman this horse ran second, so he’s run second to a top-line
horse who’s gone to stud at an elevated service fee by comparison and he
wasn’t that far behind him,” he said.
“There’s no doubt that he went wrong and he wasn’t the same horse
when he came back at three compared to what he was at two. That’s the
reality of it hence his service fee reflects that.
“He does offer value and he’s a very good back-up for Pierata at the farm.”
A $400,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase by
Waterhouse, Blue Sky Bloodstock and Rifa Mustang, Bellevue Hill is out
of the winning mare Bellevue Girl (Exceed And Excel) who in turn is a
sister to Group 3 winner Sugar Babe and a half-sister to the Listed-placed
Muscovado (Big Brown).
Pierro, the sire of 23 individual stakes winners, is currently second on
the Australian general sires table behind Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice).
“If you look at the sire line right through: Octagonal sired Lonhro;
Lonhro sired Pierro; Pierro’s got these two horses at stud and the sire line
is getting faster probably with the influence of Danehill coming through in
both our stallions,” Williams said.

“That’s injected that bit more speed
into the pedigrees and this sire line is developing right through from Sir
Tristram all the way down, and we’ve now got a Group-winning two-year-
old and a Group 1-winning older horse.
“They are sprinters by Pierro and I have no doubt that Pierro is a
champion sire in waiting and he’s an awesome racehorse and an awesome
stallion.”
The partnership which raced Bellevue Hill - Rifa Mustang, Mystery
Downs, Belsin Thoroughbreds, Raffles, David Rothwell, Will Manning, G1G
Racing and Breeding and Kate Waterhouse - will retain its shareholding in
the horse to help ensure that the stallion receives a strong book of mares
early in his stud career.
“He is a horse who is
going to get supported by
the ownership base and we
are going to offer breeding
rights which I think are
going to be a really good
investment with the way
we’ve structured them,”
Williams continued.
“The breeding rights
structure is evolving with
each (stallion) we are selling,
but I think we’re coming up with
the right offer and that allows
people who take a breeding right
to receive really good value and
become a long-term partner with
Aquis and that’s what is all about.”
Aquis Farm will launch seven
new stallions this year, headed by
Pierata and Tasmania’s leading sire
Needs Further (Encosta De Lago),
as well as Dubious (Not A Single
Doubt), Olmedo (Declaration Of
War), Royal Meeting (Invincible
Spirit) and Bellevue Hill.
Duporth (Red Ransom) has
also relocated to Aquis’ Canungra
base after a stint at Kooringal Stud
in southern NSW.
“There are stallions at all levels of the market place from $3,000 to
$40,000 and everywhere in between. All sire lines from all around the
world - Japanese, Australasian, European, they are all there. It is pretty
impressive, I have got to say,” he said.

Sister to Orfevre offered National SaleOr Fin (Stay Gold), a sister to Japan Horse
of the Year and sire Orfevre (Stay Gold) and
champion two-year-old colt Dream Journey
(Stay Gold), will be offered in foal to Lord
Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) as one of an
eye-catching number of supplementary
entries at next month’s Magic Millions
Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale. Lord
Kanaloa, Japan’s current second leading sire
behind Deep Impact (Sunday Silence), is also
the sire of this season’s Blue Diamond Stakes
(Gr 1, 1200m) winner Tagaloa who is being
aimed at the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m)
in the spring. Other supplementary entries
include Acqume (Sepoy), a stakes-placed
half-sister to the promising Arrowfield 3YO
Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Splintex (Snitzel),
who will also be offered by Aquis Farm in
foal to Lope De Vega (Shamardal), while I’m
Pretty Strong (Street Cry), a half-sister to
American filly Sharing (Speightstown), the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 8f )
winner and recent Coronation Stakes (Gr 1,
1m) second at Royal Ascot, will go under the
hammer in foal to Dundeel (High Chaparral)
under the consignment of Newgate Farm.
Sending Love (Snitzel), out Group 2 winner
Returntosender (Elusive City) and from
the family of Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) winner Estijaab (Snitzel) will also be
offered, along with the unraced Joy At Last
(More Than Ready), who is out of a half-sister
to Group 1 winners Tuesday Joy (Carnegie)
and Sunday Joy (Sunday Silence), the dam of
multiple Group 1 winner More Joyous (More
Than Ready).
Magic Millions yearling catalogue released
Meanwhile, the catalogue for this year’s Magic
Millions National Yearling Sale, “a premier source
for breeze-up buyers”, has been released. There
are 447 horses, including the progeny of leading
sires Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), I Am Invincible
(Invincible Spirit), Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) and
Savabeel (Zabeel), slated to be offered at the live
Gold Coast auction on July 27 and 28. Galileo
(Sadler’s Wells), whose son, Russian Emperor,
out of champion mare Atlantic Jewel (Fastnet
Rock) won the Hampton Court Stakes (Gr 3, 1m
2f) at Royal Ascot last week, also has one yearling
bred to southern hemisphere time catalogued
at the Gold Coast. “This sale has produced stars
all around the world,” Magic Millions managing
director Barry Bowditch said. “The highest-rated
horses to have ever raced in Singapore, a New
Zealand Horse of the Year and winners of races
like the Golden Slipper, Australian Oaks and
Victoria Derby have all been purchased from the
National Yearling Sale.” Click here to view the
catalogue.
Harbour Views can improveTrainer Matthew Williams believes there is
more to come from progressive middle distance
prospect Harbour Views (Le Havre) when he
lines up in Saturday’s Open Handicap (2000m)
at Caulfield. The five-year-old convincingly
took out a similar race over 2040 metres at
Moonee Valley earlier this month and Williams
said the gelding is in fine form, as connections
plot a ballot-free entry into the Cox Plate (Gr 1,
2040m) via the Feehan Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m).
"He's in terrific order so I couldn't be happier
with where he's at," Williams said. "He was first
time to 2000 metres at The Valley so I think he
definitely can improve off that run again.”
South Pacific to step outCiaron Maher and David Eusace are set to
unleash Royal Ascot winner South Pacific
(Galileo) for his first start in Australia, when
he contests the Open Handicap (2000m) at
Caulfield on Saturday, the final heat of the
Banjo Peterson Series. South Pacific defeated
beaten Caulfield Cup favourite Constantinople
(Galileo) to claim the King Edward V Handicap
(1m 4f) before being finishing nine and three-
quarter lengths behind Stradivarius (Sea The
Stars) in the Goodwood Cup (Gr 1, 2m) in July
last year, his final start in Britain.
Wu Gok headsMcKell Cup weightsThe in-form Wu Gok (Sebring) has been allocated
topweight for the W J McKell Cup (Listed,
2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday as he bids for
a third consecutive success at Listed level. The
six-year-old ran out a comfortable winner of
the Lord Mayors Cup (Listed, 2000m) in May,
before backing up with a battling performance
in the Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) when
defeating Carzoff (Zoffany). Wu Gok is one of
eight nominations for trainer Chris Waller and
has been allocated 61 kilograms, while he has
also nominated the gelding for the same day’s
Premiers Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) in Brisbane.

Eurozone’s fee set
Eurozone (Northern Meteor), the sire of stakes
winners Krone, Mystery Love and the Macau
Listed winner Tagmaster, will stand for a fee
of $5,500 (inc GST) at Bellereve Stud near
Canberra this year. Eurozone, who is by the
same sire as Zoustar and Deep Field, relocated
from Newgate Farm last year after a Canberra
syndicate of breeders bought the stallion.
Bellereve Stud will also stand Shaft (Flying
Spur), himself the sire of New Zealand stakes
winners Bisou Bisou and Magic Shaft, at a fee
of $3,300.
Misty Metal impresses in trialMultiple stakes-winning mare Misty Metal
(Oratorio) is set to make her delayed return
to action in the coming weeks with both the
Beaufine Stakes (Listed, 1000m) on July 11 and
the Bolton Sprint (Listed, 1200m) two weeks
later under consideration. The five-year-old,
who was last seen finishing down the field
in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)
in November, made light work of her barrier
trial at Belmont yesterday when cruising to
a six-length victory. “She needed a good hit
out and was absolutely cruising,” co-trainer
Todd Harvey told The Races WA. “It was really
pleasing and she has pulled up brilliant.”
Front Page’s owners weigh up sale offersFollowing his impressive victory in the A R
Creswick Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Flemington
on Saturday, the owners of Front Page (Magnus)
are weighing up several offers from Hong Kong
for the talented gelding. Trainer Geoff Duryea
will be fielding calls today from agents bidding
to prize him away, with the owners set to make
a decision. "I've told the syndicate what the
offers are and I've told the agents to ring me
lunchtime tomorrow (Tuesday) and it will be
open to negotiation or the door is closed,"
Duryea told Racing.com. Duryea added that he
had not yet devised a spring plan for the three-
year-old, should he remain in Australia. “We
will put him in the paddock for a little while and
give him a chance to catch his breath. Then we
will bring him back and start testing the water
with him," Duryea said. "He seems fine in
himself. He doesn't know what all the hoo-ha
is about.”
Change of stable for Angel Of TruthLast year’s Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)
winner Angel Of Truth (Animal Kingdom)
has been moved by owner Ross Williams to
the Hawkes Racing stable ahead of a spring
campaign. The rising five-year-old won the
Group 1 three-year-old race for Kembla Grange
trainer Gwenda Markwell but the gelding has
been unplaced in 11 subsequent starts since
his April 2019 victory. He has not raced since
finishing sixth in this year’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1,
3200m) on a Heavy 8 track back in April. Angel
Of Truth, who is raced by Williams’ Superhorse
syndicate, has now been prepared by five
different trainers.
Dundeel filly impresses at SconeLand Ahoy (Dundeel) made an impressive
debut when taking out a maiden handicap over
1300 metres at Scone yesterday as the well-
backed favourite. Trained by John Sargent, the
two-year-old pulled three and a quarter lengths
clear of Deed Of Gift (Redoute’s Choice) who
just edged out Schengen (Eurozone) in their
battle for second. Bred by her owner Sir Owen
Glenn’s Go Bloodstock, Land Ahoy is the second
winner out of Aiden Sea (Danehill Dancer),
a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 placed
stakes-winner Argentina (Sadler’s Wells).
Latenighttoughguy nears returnTrainer Kym Hann is excited by the upcoming
return of his ‘very, very good’ three-year-old
Latenighttoughguy (Written Tycoon). The
gelding won a 975-metre maiden by four and
a quarter lengths at Swan Hill on March 20,
and Hann told Racing.com that he could next
be seen at Sandown next month, after trialing
at Bendigo. "He's trialing next week at Bendigo
and he's due to run at Sandown in July," Hann
said. "I'm very excited (to have him back). I do
think he's very, very good."
Victorian owners allowed back on trackRacing Victoria has confirmed that owners
will be allowed back on track at Ballarat today,
a delay of 24 hours after plans to introduce
owners at Swan Hill yesterday were put on
hold. Owners will be segregated from racing
participants and RV said there would be a time
limit for owners being on course and a limit of 30
owners per race, with pre-registration required.
Owners will be managed by each respective
race club, in accordance with Victoria’s social
gathering guidelines.
VRC hopeful of 50,000 cup crowdThe Victorian Racing Club is planning for
crowds of up to ‘40-50,000’ people over
its Melbourne Cup Carnival, according to
chairman Amanda Elliott. “We are very
optimistic about Cup Week. We are planning
for it to go ahead with a number (in mind).
When we think about what that number
might be, we are hopeful that it will be
around the 40-50,000,” Elliott told Racing.
com. The landscape has changed rapidly
in the last 24 hours, with Victorian Premier
Daniel Andrews rescinding much of the
planned easing of restrictions due to a spike
in infections of Covid-19. "The (Victorian)
government has given no indication when
mass gatherings will begin again. I don't
believe they will apply the ability for mass

put on a Cup Week that is obviously different
but really bespoke, beautiful and unmissable
for the difference it will be this year."

Will Freedman to take out licenceWill Freedman, the son of trainer and media
personality Richard Freedman, has confirmed
plans to establish a stable at Scone in the NSW
Hunter Valley. Freedman will go out on his own
after working alongside his father and uncle
Michael in their training partnership that is
starting to make inroads on the Sydney scene.
“Happy to announce I will be embarking on my
own training career from Scone next month.
It’s a big step, but one I’m going to enjoy. I’ll
have 20 boxes with 1/4 acre yards, my own sand
track, water-walker and treadmill, yet only a
stone's throw to the track,” Freedman tweeted.
McNeil suspendedJye McNeil’s chances of securing a first Victorian
Jockeys’ Championship were dealt a blow when
the stewards handed down a ten-meeting
suspension for his ride aboard the unplaced
Sodalite (Zebedee) at Bendigo on Sunday. It
capped a frustrating day for McNeil, who rode
three second placings on the card. The 25-year-
old pleaded guilty to careless riding and has
started his suspension immediately, returning
on July 2. McNeil leads Daniel Stackhouse by
123 wins to 122 in the race to become Victorian
Champion Jockey.
Jockey weight scale decision imminentVictorian Jockeys Association boss Matt Hyland
believes a decision is imminent on whether
to change the minimum weight for jockeys
from 54 kilograms to 55 kilograms. As part
of measures implemented in the wake of the
Coronavirus pandemic, the minimum weight
was temporarily raised to 56 kilograms. Jockeys
have twice voted to increase the minimum
weight, however Hyland concedes the decision
will be down to Racing Victoria. "I've got to chat
to Racing Victoria about it and get the feedback
from what they've got on the table from the
trainers and work out what is achievable and
what we can do, what can we look at," Hyland
told Racing.com. "Ultimately it's RV's decision.
What we put forward is our proposal for what
our preference is and what we'd like, but it's
their decision. I would think we'd have some
kind of clear picture in the next day or so."
Lismore meet moved to CasinoFollowing a track inspection at Lismore, where
stewards deemed the surface unsuitable for
racing, Thursday’s (June 25) scheduled meeting
has been transferred to Casino. Race 1, the
Benchmark 66 Handicap, will now be staged
over 1400 metres (from 1516m) and Race 4,
scheduled as a Class 1 Handicap over 1516
metres, has now merged with Race 3, which will
be run as a Class 2 Handicap over 1400 metres
with no age restriction. Acceptances are due at
9am today.

Wyndspelle to stand at Grangewilliam StudGroup 1-winning miler Wyndspelle (Iffraaj)
will join the roster at Grangewilliam Stud
in South Taranaki this spring, where he will
stand for a fee of NZ$7,500 plus GST. The six-
year-old retires having won the Captain Cook
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) on his penultimate start
of a 40-race career spent at the top level,
including a third placing in the Cantala Stakes
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington and success in
the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m) at three.
Wyndspelle joins young stallions Derryn
(Hinchinbrook) and The Bold One (Fastnet
Rock) in addition to Group 1-winning sire
Zed (Zabeel) at Grangewilliam.
Liefting’s homebred success at PukekoheTrainer Rudy Liefting was delighted to
prepare Fast Mover (Move Faster) to a
maiden win at Pukekohe on Saturday, with
the four-year-old becoming the first winner
for Liefting’s home-bred stallion Move Faster
(Keeper). “It was a good feeling to get the
win on Saturday,” Liefting said. “I have done
everything – I have had trotters, played polo,
I can shoe, and I am a saddler. I thought
it would be quite nice to breed a winner
with your own stallion. So now I have done
that.” Move Faster is out of Liefting’s Group
1-winning mare Justa Tad (Istidaad) and he
went on to win at stakes level himself, taking
out the Ryder Stakes (Listed, 1200m) and
Wanganui Guineas (Listed, 1340m).

Date set forSingapore returnRacing will resume in Singapore on July 11
after The Singapore Turf Club announced
yesterday the sport had received government
approval to return. "With Singapore moving
into phase two of the post-circuit breaker
period on 19 June 2020, the club has
received approval from the government
to resume racing behind closed doors on
11 July 2020, with strict health and safe
management measures in place," the STC
said. "To minimise the risks of Covid-19
transmission, the racecourse will not reopen
to the public for the time being. We thank
our customers for their continued support
and seek their understanding that these
arrangements are necessary to ensure their
safety and wellbeing, in alignment with the
government's regulations and guidelines."
Racing has not taken place in Singapore since
April 7, when the Singapore government
imposed a nationwide partial curfew on non-
essential services in a bid to curb the spread
of the coronavirus pandemic.
Interim base for HayesDavid Hayes received a boost yesterday
when the Hong Kong Jockey Club granted
the Hall Of Fame trainer a licence to operate
from a temporary base while he waits for his
new stable to be freed up for next season.
Hayes, who is currently midway through his
14-day quarantine period in Hong Kong,
will take over the stables of John Moore
when the latter departs for Australia at the
end of the season. The interim stable is
expected to be up and running early next
month. “I will have a temporary stable to
do a little bit of work, probably just walking
and swimming,” Hayes told the South China
Morning Post. “It will basically be a process
of waiting for all the new horses to come
in. I don’t think there will be too many in
that early stable because I haven’t really
targeted local horses at all. Because most of
the trainers here are my old mates, I have
been really focused on getting new stock to
Hong Kong.”

19 for Poet’s VoiceThe late Poet’s Voice (Dubawi) sired his 19th
individual stakes winner when One Voice (3
f ex Zaaqya by Nayef) overcame a slow start
before keeping on well to take out the Blue
Wind Stakes (Gr 3, 1m 2f) at Leopardstown on
Sunday. Trained by Jessica Harrington, the filly
beat Snow (Galileo) by half a length with Yaxeni
(Maxios) a further two and a quarter lengths
away in third. One Voice has now won two of
her four starts, having finished second in the
Salsabil Stakes (Listed, 1m 2f) at Navan on her
seasonal reappearance. A €55,000 purchase by
BBA Ireland from the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale,
One Voice is out of the winning Nayef (Gulch)
mare Zaaqya. Her second dam, the Listed-
placed Classical Dancer (Dr Fong), is a half-
sister to the Group 1 winner Imperial Dancer
(Primo Dominie), sire of the Listed winner
Imperial Guest.
63 for Sea The StarsGilltown Stud resident Sea The Stars (Cape
Cross) sired his 63rd individual stakes winner
when Baptism (3 c ex Holy Salt by Holy Roman
Emperor) registered a comfortable victory in the
Premio Botticelli (Listed) in Rome on Sunday
evening. Formerly raced by Cheveley Park Stud
when trained by John Gosden, Baptism beat
Spiritual Son (Pour Moi) by two and a quarter
lengths with Spygate (Brazen Beau) a further
two and three-quarter lengths away in third.
Bred by Tullpark Ltd, Baptism was purchased
by Capital Bloodstock for €460,000 at the Goffs
November Foal Sale before being bought for
68,000gns by Marco Botti during last year’s
Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale.
He is the first winner out of the winning Holy
Roman Emperor (Danehill) mare Holy Salt, a
half-sister to Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m)
winner I’m Your Man (Cape Cross). Sea The
Stars stands for a fee of €150,000 (AUS$244,000

Dettori to replace Marquand on Epsom Derby favouriteFrankie Dettori has been handed a glorious
opportunity to land a third Epsom Derby (Gr
1, 1m 4f) next month after he was snapped up
for the ride on ante-post favourite English King
(Camelot). Trained by Ed Walker, English King
jumped to the head of the Derby market following
a runaway victory in the Lingfield Derby Trial
(Listed, 1m 3.5f) earlier this month – the same
race Anthony Van Dyck (Galileo) won before
going on to Epsom Classic success last season.
Walker revealed yesterday that Dettori will carry
the same black and yellow silks of owner Bjorn
Nielsen he sported aboard Ascot Gold Cup (Gr 1,
2m 4f) hero Stradivarius (Sea The Stars) last week
when he bids for more Classic glory at Epsom on
July 4. Tom Marquand, who has been on board
English King for both his wins was pragmatic after
losing the ride. "It's a shame but I fully respect
their decision and I can only wish them the best
of luck,” he said. “English King looks an exciting
Derby prospect. Frankie's had a lot of luck and
success for Bjorn Nielsen and I wish everyone
good luck.”
Oleksandra to be sold after Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Hong Kong inviteSaturday’s Jaipur Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner
Oleksandra (Animal Kingdom) will be sold
following a tilt at the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint
(Gr 1, 5.5f) in November, with an invite to
contest the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) in
December from the HKJC. Oleksandra became
the first Australian-bred horse to win a Grade
1 in America since the Pattern was created in
1974 and Barry Irwin, CEO of owners Team
Valor, said the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint would
be the last time she would wear their green and
maroon colours. "That will be her last race for
Team Valor," Irwin said. "She will be offered
for sale after the Breeders’ Cup at an auction in
Kentucky with an as-yet undetermined agent.
William Nader of the Hong Kong Jockey Club

Luis Corrales widened the gap on
his rivals in the Macau Jockeys’
Premiership with another treble
on Saturday’s race card, and a fifth
Macau Jockeys Title appears just a foregone
conclusion.
Corrales, who was on fire in the month of
May kicking home 15 winners and 12 placings
from his 39 rides, has now ridden seven winners
and seven placings from his 21 rides for June.
After last Saturday, Panamanian-born
Corrales leads the rider’s standings with 47
winners, 17 ahead of local rider Roger Yu on 30,
with Brazilian Fausto Henrique in third spot on
28, and Frenchman J B Hamel in fourth on 26.
The day started early for Corrales with a win
on the Nick Moore-prepared Hostwin Euphoria
(Street Boss) in the Class 4 over 1350 metres.
Hostwin Euphoria, a three-year-old son of
Street Boss (Street Cry), made it win number
two in Macau and proved his versatility in
being able to handle both turf and sand. The
win continued the wonderful start to Moore’s
training career, giving him his 11th win for the
season, with an additional 11 placings, from
only 46 runners to date.
Moore, who is in his first season as trainer
only had his first runners in December, and has
quickly established the best strike-rate of any
trainer in Macau with stats of a 24 per cent win-
rate, and a 48 per cent place strike. Hostwin
Euphoria was his only runner on Saturday.
Fantastic Friends (Denman) secured
himself a Derby (1800m) berth when he
finished strongly from the back of the field to
win the Four-Year-Old Handicap over 1800
metres. The victory automatically afforded him
a Derby start and gave Corrales his second win
of the day.
Prepared by Stanley Chin, Fantastic Friends
made it win number four in Macau and whilst
not the strongest Derby contender highlighted
his liking for the 1800 metre course. His record
now reads one win and two placings, with his
only unplaced effort at the distance a fourth
when only beaten one a half lengths.
Japanese import Eclair Hunter (Novellist)
rounded out Corrales’s day when he appreciated
getting back on top of the ground with a good
win in the Class 2 & 3 over 1800 metres.
The Geoff Allendorf-trained five-year-old
had failed to handle the very heavy conditions
at his previous start when sent out an equal
favorite over 1500 metres. Saturday’s good track
and a perfect ride by Corrales provided the
turnaround in form with the victory his third in
the enclave. Prior to being imported to Macau
the gelding had won a two-year-old maiden
over 1800 metres at Nakayama in Japan.
With only 13 race days left before the end
of the season, Corrales is looking a “lay down
misere” to secure his fifth title. If by some quirk
of fate Corrales went winless to the end of the
season, Roger Yu would need nothing short of
a miracle to win the 18 races to get by him on
his current strike-rate. Corrales has won four
Macau Senior Jockeys’ Titles and was twice
Champion Apprentice in the 1999 and 2000
seasons.
Kelowna Star (Sufficient) bounced back to
winning form with a strong performance in the
Class 1 & 2 Handicap over 1500 metres under
Peter Ho.
Prepared by leading trainer Tony Fung,
the former Macau Guineas (1500m) winner
of 2016 was allowed to settle at the tail of the
field in a race run at good speed. In a typical
patient Peter Ho ride, Kelowna Star was still last
coming to the corner before peeling wide at the
top of the straight.
The eight-year-old son of Sufficient
(Zabeel) produced a brilliant turn of foot over
the last 200 metres to beat Luen On Dance Kid
(Snitzel), in a great four-way finish with the
dead-heaters Pearl Green (Fastnet Rock) and
Bring Me Speed (Sebring) in third.
After the weekend Tony Fung has what
appears to be an unbeatable lead in the
Trainer’s Premiership with 38 wins, 12 clear of
Danny Wong and Geoff Allendorf who are both
on 26 victories.

Shalaa - Arrowfield shuttler Shalaa
(Invincible Spirit) registered his second
individual winner on Thursday, his first in
Ireland, when Shalaalaa (2 c ex Cheap Thrills
by Bertolini) won at his first start at Fairyhouse.
The Ger Lyons trainee was the stable’s second
stringer according to the market but was
backed in significantly to start a clear second-
favourite behind stablemate Colour Sergeant
(Kingman). In a slowly-run five-runner event,
Shalaalaa sat beyond midfield before switching
out upon straightening. He reeled in Twilight
Heir (Twilight Son) to win by a short head with
Colour Sergeant a length and a half away in
third. Purchased for 70,000 gns by BBA Ireland
at Tattersalls October Book 2 from the draft of
Stratford Place Stud, Shalaalaa hails from the
family of Golden Shaheen (Gr 1, 1200m) winner
Muarrab (Oasis Dream). Shalaa will stand for

Spill The Beans - Late Aquis Farm sire Spill
The Beans (Snitzel) extended his dominance
as the leading first season sire by number of
winners when Little Miss Pixie (2 f ex Pixie Miss by
Lucky Unicorn) won at Toowoomba on Tuesday.
Trained by Tony and Maddysen Sears, Little Miss
Pixie took the 1110-metre handicap by a neck
over Dragon Miss (Hidden Dragon) with a length
and a half back to Five Oxford (Golden Archer)
in third. Spill The Beans then sired his 12th first-
crop winner when Bad Barista (2 f ex Sparkling
Sound by Oratorio) took out an 1100-metre QTIS
two-year-old maiden at Ipswich on debut. The
filly won by a comfortable margin of three and
three-quarter lengths ahead of Boom Ranga
(Spirit Of Boom) with Violation (Dream Ahead) a
further neck away in third. Passed in for $32,500
at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Sale, Bad
Barista is the only winner from two to race out of
Sparkling Sound (Oratorio) who herself is a half-
sister to stakes place-getters Pride Of Westbury
(Octagonal) and Lanquin (Last Tycoon). Further
back, this is the family of four-time black-type
scorer Ferragamo (Success Express). Spill The
Beans stood for four seasons at Aquis’ Canungra
base and covered 605 mares at a fee of $11,000,
before dying suddenly in October last year.
Super One - Newgate Farm resident Super
One (I Am Invincible) sired his seventh first-
crop winner when La Jolie Fille (2 f ex Lolavie
by Stratum) took out a 1350-metre maiden at
Wyong on Thursday. The Paul Perry-trained filly
defeated Pitchfork (All Too Hard) by a neck with
Avostar (Kuroshio) coming home a further four
and a quarter lengths away in third. Purchased
by her trainer for $10,000 at the Inglis Scone
Yearling Sale, La Jolie Fille is one of two winners
from two to race out of Lolavie (Stratum) who
herself is a half-sister to Listed placegetter Royal
Arrow (Royal Academy). Further back, this is the
family of four-time Group 1 scorer Appearance
(Commands) and this year’s Randwick Guineas
(Gr 1, 1600m) victor Shadow Hero (Pierro).
Miss Divine Em’s (2 f ex Manhattan Angel by
Statue Of Liberty) win in the 1002-metre two-year-
old maiden at Donald on Saturday handed Super
One his eighth first-crop winner. The Patrick
Payne-trained filly defeated Diesel ‘n’ Dust (Pride
Of Dubai) by a neck with Early Plea (Star Witness)
coming home a length and a quarter away in
third. Purchased by Prime Thoroughbreds for
$42,500 at the Magic Millions National Yearling
Sale, Miss Divine Em is one of three winners from
three foals out of Manhattan Angel (Statue Of
Liberty). Super One stands at Newgate Farm for a
fee of $11,000 (inc GST) in 2020.
Vadamos - Rich Hill Stud shuttle stallion
Vadamos (Monsun) secured his first win as a sire
when Sa Pala Umbrossa (2 f ex Grain de Beaute,
by Lawman) won on debut at Chilivani in Italy
on Monday. Trained by Antonio Cottu, she beat
Lory Di Toni (Adaay) by two and three-quarter
lengths with Capo Testa (Duel) another six
and a half lengths away in third. Vadamos’ first
crop led the way at New Zealand Bloodstock’s
National Yearling Sale earlier this year with 31
of his yearlings selling for a total of $3.1 million
in the Book 1 and 2 sessions, at an average of
$101,550, crowning him as the leading first
season sire by average. He will return to Rich
Hill Stud this coming breeding season where
he will stand for a fee of NZ$15,000 (plus GST).
Vancouver - Coolmore freshman sire
Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) enjoyed a fruitful
week as he took his tally on to eight individual
winners, starting with Exhibition’s (2 c ex Haiku
by Encosta De Lago) win in Saturday’s Magna
Grecia New To Coolmore Handicap (1500m) at
Randwick. The Richard and Michael Freedman-
trained colt defeated Angel Helena (More Than
Ready) by a nose with Silhouette (Teofilo) a
neck away in third. Originally purchased by
James Bester Bloodstock for $80,000 at the
Magic Millions National Weanling Sale from
the Coolmore draft, Exhibition was passed in
for $100,000 at Book 1 of Karaka. He is out of
the Encosta de Lago (Fairy King) mare Haiku,
making him a half-brother to Group 1 winner
Japonisme (Choisir). Vancouver sired his
eighth individual winner when Narvaez (2c ex
Headway by Charge Forward) got off the mark
in a handicap at Bendigo on Sunday. Trained
by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the two-
year-old got the better of Galactic Fury (Street
Boss) to score by a short head. Confrontational
(Redoute’s Choice) was a further two and a
quarter lengths behind in third. Purchased for
$300,000 out of the Lime Country draft at the
Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Narvaez is the
sixth foal and third winner out of Coolmore
Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Headway
(Charge Forward), the Champion 2YO Filly in
Australia in 2008/09. Vancouver stands at Jerrys
Plains for a fee of $30,250 (inc GST) this spring.

sired his second winner at the elite level when
the Neil Drysdale-trained Oleksandra (5 m

stakes-placed in Dubai. Oleksandra’s year-
younger brother Macedonian Ruler (Animal
Kingdom) has also been shipped stateside,
while also among Alexandra Rose’s six foals to
race is Hostwin Galaxy (Redoute’s Choice), a
stakes placegetter in Macau, and Alice Springs

Africa. Animal Kingdom stood for US$15,000
(AUS$22,000 approx) at Jonabell Farm in

Saturday after Golden Horde’s victory. Lethal
Force stood for €6,000 (AUD$10,000 approx) in
2020.
Sea The Moon - Lanwades Stud’s Sea The

Belmont Park on Saturday night, the Woody
Stephens Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), went to the Thomas
Amoss-trained three-year-old No Parole (3 c

claiming his first victory at the highest level,
having landed a Listed contest in February
and putting in a disappointing run in the
Oaklawn Park Rebel Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) last
time. He became the second top level scorer
for his sire Violence (Medaglia D’Oro), who is
also responsible for the Argentinian winner
Dandy Del Barrio, when beating Echo Town
(Speightstown) by three and three quarter

from 13 starts. However, she has been knocking
on the door in Listed company, having placed
twice and ran fourth in the Oaks d’Italia (Gr

of the eleven- runner field. Le Havre, who
