DTH stands for Direct-To-Home television. DTH is defined as:

The reception of satellite programmers

with a personal dish in an individual home.DTH does away with the need for the local

cable operator and puts the broadcaster directly intouch with consumer .

DTH services were first proposed in India in 1996.

But was not approved due to the concerns over national security.

Finally, In 2000 DTH was allowed and it was Doordarshan which

make it possible to provide its facilities to consumers from 1st April

2000.

Broadcasters like Star and Zee are pushing hard for DTH servicesin India. The operators were required to setup earth stations in

India within 12 months for getting license of broadcasting whose

cost was $2.14 million and will be valid for 10 years.4

Programming sources are simply the channels that

provide programming for broadcast. The provide (the DTH

platform) doesnt create original programming itself; it pays

other companies (HBO, for example, or ESPN or STAR TV or

Sahara etc.) for the right to broadcast their content via

satellite. In this way, the provider is kind of like a broker

between the viewer and the actual programming sources.

(Cable television networks also work on the same principle.).

The Broadcast center converts all of this programming into ahigh-quality, uncompressed digital stream.

The broadcast center is the central hub of the system. At thebroadcast center or the Playout & Uplink location, the

television provider receives signals from various programmingsources, compresses.

At this point, the stream contains a vast quantity of data about270 megabits per second (Mbps) for each channel.

For DTH system communication channel is air and Band-Width is :

Ku Band Uplink : 13.75 to 14.5 GHz

Ku Band Down links : 10.95 to 11.2 GHz

: 11.45 to 11.70 GHz

: 12.50 to 12.75 GHz 8

The receive terminals are basically for the reception of the signals beingbeamed from the transmission station. The terminal consists of thefollowing:

A Set-top Box is a device that enables a television set to become a user interface to

the internet and also enables a television set to receive and decode digital television

(DTV) broadcasts.

DTV Set-top boxes are sometimes called receivers. A Set-top box is necessary to

television viewers who wish to use their current analog television sets to receivedigital broadcasts.

A set top box (STB) Or set top unit(STU) is a device that connects to a television

and an external source of signal, turning the signal content which is then displayed

on the television screen.11

Conceptually, DTH(satellite TV) is a lot like broadcast TV

The main limitation of broadcast TV is range. The radio

signals used to broadcast television shoot out from the

broadcast antenna in a straight line. In order to receive

these signals, you have to be in the direct line of sight of

the antenna.

The other problem with broadcast TV is that the signal is

often distorted, even in the viewing area.

DTH solves the problems of range and distortion by

transmitting broadcast signals from satellites orbiting

the Earth.

Since satellites are high in the sky, there are a lot more

customers in the line of sight. DTH systems transmit

and receive radio signals using specialized antennas

called satellite dishes.

day. In the past 5 months, two solid competitors like Airtel,

Reliance have entered the market. In coming 5 yearswe havemanaged to overtake Japan as the largest DTH market in Asia. In

the next 4 years (by 2014) we will be able to add another 30

million subscribers (which is about the same as the population ofBelgium, Portugal, and Greece put together!!)
