All bulk email sent to recipients who have not expressly registered
permission for their addresses to be placed on the specific mailing
list, and which requires recipients to "opt-out" to stop further
unsolicited bulk mailings, is by definition Unsolicited Bulk Email,
a.k.a. "Spam".
Opt-out

Opt-in
With оpt-in the Recipient has verifiably confirmed permission for
the address to be included on the specific mailing list, by confirming
(responding to) the list subscription request verification. This is the
standard practice for all responsible Internet mailing lists, it ensures
users are properly subscribed, from a working address, and with the
address owner's consent.

Quantity
The number of direct mail messages (especially e-mails) is
much,
much,
much lower. <

SPAM messages are usually sent
automatically to automatically
selected potential customers
from automatically gathered
databases. Sometimes instead
of personalization they use
nicknames or e-mails.
Automatic
![Page 12: Direct Mail vs. SPAM](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081515/5549f937b4c9055b7a8b48a4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Direct mail offers are
personalized and are
carefully selected to reach
the best prospects with the
most appropriate offer.
Personal
![Page 13: Direct Mail vs. SPAM](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081515/5549f937b4c9055b7a8b48a4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
In most cases the SPAM Sender has simply harvested
the address from the Internet or purchased the address
from another spammer and "opted it in" himself.
Random Lists

Direct mail databases are
regularly updated with
previously checked changes
in address, personal data,
purchase history or other
selection criteria.

SPAM messages
usually offer cheap
products, adult
movies, V!agra, or
services that will
make you rich
immediately.
Quality

Quality
Direct mail is appropriate for good or
high quality (sometimes even luxury)
products or services.

The Spammers’ Rule
If it is cheap, erotic or scandalous –
SPAM it.
![Page 18: Direct Mail vs. SPAM](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081515/5549f937b4c9055b7a8b48a4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Always remember:
SPAM is BAD.
Direct Mail is GOOD.
Sometimes both are very similar.
Which one to use is a matter of business
ethics.
