Home to the Art of Cooking & Literature

Rumours Café & Librería Reflexión is a combined fresh experience, a centre of cultural and culinary excellence equal to that to be found in the leading cities of Europe.

Rumours Café sets out to stimulate the palate and excite the eyes of its patrons with dishes by Chef Fernando Mario Coradazzi whose exceptional culinary talents are expressed through the originality, subtly of flavour and vibrant artistry of his masterly creations.

We take great satisfaction in experimenting with flavours and ingredients, pushing the boundaries, taking from classic to fusion to create contemporary cuisine. Our personal culinary preferences are Mediterranean gastronomy fused with spices whilst twisting new and old techniques. One of our passions is the entwining of European and Asian cuisines to create a vital gastronomic fusion. Rumours Café menu changes regularly in response to seasonal fresh produce sourced not only from the most ecological local producers but, as required, from further field where some exotics are only available. Rumours Café is open throughout the day. We also offer a range of fine wines, alcohol and liqueurs’, as well as a top selection of coffees and the finest teas and infusions.

Librería Reflexión offers customer time for quiet browsing of carefully selected Spanish and English hard & soft cover books ranging from Coffee Table Art through to thought provoking topical subjects, novels and light relaxed reading. A children’s corner has a wide selection of books to interest the young.

The bookshop is run by helpful and knowledgeable staff who enjoy reading and are willing to advise the customers. Every corner of our shop is crammed full of reading treasures.

La Marina Bar and Restaurant has been recommended by the most prestigious gastronomy guides, including the coveted Michelin Guide, where they have been mentioned for the last four years. Here they gained the BIB classification ‘Gourmand’ Award. They are also one of the 500 restaurants in Spain and Portugal where you can eat the best quality for the best price (average price per person between 30-35€).

However, recognising these difficult times, La Marina which is the most traditional Bar Restaurant in the Campo de Gibraltar area has come up with the “Executive Menus” from Monday to Friday for 20€ and “Family Menus” on Saturday and Sunday for the same price. This is an excellent offer that cannot be missed. They have also created a more informal and economic new Tapas Menu at the bar, where you can drink and eat with friends whilst enjoying the sea view. All this without losing the quality and tradition that distinguishes La Marina Restaurant founded in 1947 and declared a touristic and social interest. In 2009 it also won the highest distinction in the city of La Linea, the Golden Medal. Check out our website and our special menus for groups, flamenco shows and events, etc.

white Grenache Grapes

The cellar Espelt is situated in the country estate of Mas Espelt, in Gerona, where they make wines with DO Ampurdá. The wine cellar is family run and relies on a long line of traditions in cultivating, but it wasn’t until the year 2000 when they opened their new wine cellar that they could unite old and new vines to create the largest vineyard of 250 hectares in the area. The vineyards are situated in different areas and planted on different terrains.

Vailet is a white wine made with care; it contains varieties of the white Grenache grape, widely distributed in the area and the macabeo grape. The harvest is done in a meticulous way and comes from clay-like and gravelly ground. The fermentation is carried out in steel casks at 14º.

Tasting Notes: Pale yellow in colour. On the nose, clean aromas of pineapple, apple and other matured white fruits. Smooth texture, well balanced, powerful and yet fresh flavours all combined to enjoy. The after taste is subtle and pleasant.

Meson Asador La Bota has returned to traditional methods to prepare traditional cuisine, roasting all their meat over a log fire to give it a real authentic flavour.

There is a spacious yet cosy dining room, with a rustic design, where you can enjoy dishes like the delicious chicken, or rabbit, pork ribs, beef fillets, pork cheeks, rack and shoulder of lamb, suckling pig, or some of the incredible butifarras (Catalan sausage), all cooked slowly over a wood fire.

La Bota is currently open Thursday to Sunday from 12pm to 3pm and then 8pm to 12am, it is recommended that you pre-order as all the meat is freshly roasted and obviously takes time to cook, especially the suckling pig.You can also enjoy everything on the menu in the comfort of your own home, by pre-ordering and collecting your order at the time you require it.

So order your succulent chicken now and taste the real wood smoked flavours.

Asian MarketJosie has been supplying the residents and restaurants of Sotogrande and the surrounding area for over 5 years now. From her new shop in Guadiaro she specialises in Indonesian, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Philippine and Indian products.

The shop, found opposite the recinto ferial, stocks a fantastic range of noodles, rice’s, sauces, dips, pastes and oils together with a great range of spices, very difficult to come by in this part of the world. The frozen food section includes fish, vegetables and everyone’s favourite, dim sum.

Sushi has become very popular in recent years both for its unique flavours and healthy reputation. The Asian Market stocks a selection of Sushi ingredients including rice, seaweed sheets and wasabi, also teriyaki and various Japanese sauces and pastes.

Why not look on the internet for recipes, check out what you need to make your favourite oriental dishes and then bring along a list so that Josie can prepare the ingredients for you. Maybe you would like to give your BBQ an oriental twist by using various oils, spices and pastes to create marinades and salad dressings, along with a range of useful cooking utensils and bamboo steamers, all available at the Asian Market.

So whether it is wholesale or retail, if you are making California rolls or crispy duck, if you need rice noodles or prawn crackers then Josie will endeavour to help or suggest an alternative.

This area is found at the beginning of the western slope of the strait, in the municipality of Tarifa. It features a wide and interesting sandy depression along its whole extension with a variable width between 100 and 300m., a length that exceeds 3km., and a tidal range between a few centimetres to over 1.5m. Water is provided by tides and the Jara and Vega rivers and maintain with saline and oligosaline features respectively, the continuous presence of water, although its extension, depth and salinity are very variable depending on the season, which favours the co-existence on the internal margin of a mixed layer of vegetation with fresh water and salt water species.

The location of this Nature Area offers excellent conditions for the observation of all kinds of migrants, and the best environment for a great number of shorebirds and gulls, especially Audouin’s Gull.

Great Crested Grebe / Somormujo Lavanco / Podiceps Cristatus

Scarce resident in swamps, very localised as a breeding species with 4-7 pairs, and more extensive while wintering. ID: The largest of the group. In flight its rapid beating of wings is characteristic together with the contrast of white/dark colouring

Little Grebe / Zampulín Común / Tachybaptus Ruficollis

Common resident of lagoons. ID: smallest of the grebes, with dumpy body and dark coloured. In flight lacks white on wings. It has a characteristic rattling and high pitched trill that betrays its presence

Black-Necked Grebe / Zampullín Cuellinegro / Podiceps nigricollis

Rare winter visitor found on the coasts of the Bay of Algeciras between November and February. Breeding ceased from the middle of the last century when La Janda dried out; at that time it was the most abundant of the group. ID: Tiny bill, uptilted to a sharp point. In winter black on face reaches below its red eye, contrasting somewhat with the white round ear coverts and on neck.

Enjoy a Relaxing Evening on the

El Alcázar Hotel Terrace

96

Without any doubt, the opening of “El Alcázar” Hotel in the old town of Castellar de la Frontera has been a big success. The idea of using the old Royal Palace of the XIII century castle and converting it into a three stars hotel has been a good decision. All visitors and guests agree that this hotel has got a special charm and they all confess that they can feel the history of this old village and the castle when they are within its walls.

Apart from the historic and architectural value, this hotel has another attraction that makes it worth a visit. The castle is located on top of a hill and from the terraces and balconies of the hotel, one can admire fantastic views. The reservoirs, the mountains around the area, other small white villages nearby, even the sea, including the bay of Algeciras, make up a wonderful landscape of incredible beauty.

Can you imagine sitting on a terrace of a medieval castle and enjoying the panorama described above? Can you imagine watching a fantastic summer sunset with good company, having a drink and, listening to good music? Don’t you agree that it is relaxing to enjoy a chat with friends in a very quiet atmosphere while listening to gentle jazz or blues melodies? The hotel directors agreed that this was possible and so they have fitted out one of the terraces of the Alcázar Hotel for this purpose. This new area now opened to the public is a place where a combination of history, architecture and nature is mixed for the delight of visitors. Apart from this, we have to add a relaxing atmosphere, just the opposite to the noisy and busy world we are used to.

I was invited to the opening of this terrace and I can say that I enjoyed it very much. We arrived some minutes before the sunset and watching this natural phenomenon whilst having a drink and listening to good music was a pleasant and unforgettable experience.
