PROGRAMME OBJECTIVEThe aim of this program is to enable students to excel in Game Design through a strong foundation in the basics of designing, creating and publishing interactive games. Course covers the life cycle of game design and development starting with Design and Documentation process, Graphics and Sound Editing, Storyboard and Character Drawing, 3D Character Design and Animation, C# Programming and 2D Game Development. Students are exposed to creation of Casual Games, usage of Mathematics and Physics for Artificial Intelligence, and the development of Games Level Design and Simulation. Students get involved in specific role based on their area of strength as an artist, programmer, designer, producer, tester etc., in live Projects at MAGES.

MODULE OUTLINE

GD101 - Game Design and DocumentationThis module involves training students in the important processes and methodologies that are required in games development. Game design concepts will comprise of Level Design, Character Design and Game Balance.

GD102 - Graphics and Sound EditingStudents will be taught the different file formats, compression and their uses for the different game platforms and engines. Graphic editing tools will be used to learn editing, 2D animation creation concepts, game sprites and theories and concepts of audio files.

GD105 - C# Programming and 2D Game DevelopmentThe use of 2D game engines will be introduced in this module so that students can develop a complete game. Students will experience the use of a rapid application type of game engine. Emphasis will be on the sequencing of game play logic such as the condition, events and actions required in a game. The module will require the students to go through the game development process and complete a full game. Assessment will focus on the elements that are important for a typical 2D game anatomy. Students will also explore the development of the different types of games genres. The correct characteristics for the different game genres will be emphasized.

GD106 - Creating Casual GamesThis module will provide students with an understanding on the overview, history, genres of computer games, and the principles of casual game structures. Students will be required to consider and plan for playability, interaction, interfaces, and graphics for the casual game.

GD107 - Mathematics and Physics For Artificial IntelligenceStudents will be required to study essential mathematical computation and calculus, the concepts and formula derivation for trigonometry, mechanics, momentum and gravitation. Game engines and development tools will then be used by the students to implement the Mathematics and Physics formulas in the game play environment for observing and understanding the reactions of objects.

GD108 - Game Level Design and SimulationThis subject will train in the concepts and procedures needed to design a well-balanced level for a game. This module also looks at the various simulation and balancing techniques to create intuitive and fun pathways for the player as well as how level design can support the storyline and ensure a positive game experience for the player.

GD109 - ProjectThe Game Design Project tasks the students to review the game design fundamentals mastered from the various modules and apply the necessary skills in the creation of game development.

MAGES Guided ProjectSucceeding as Project Manager or Project Leader requires that developer must complete the projects on time, finish within budget and ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. Students are expected to monitor all aspects of the project, ensure that proper knowledge and resources are harnessed to create the desired outcome in a timely, cost-effective manner. Students will also devote most of their time in the research and design of the original game.

Diploma in Game Design

GD103 - Storyboard and Character DrawingThis module provides training on digital drawing tools and story and concept development for games. Students will be required to research for game stories, develop a game concept and illustrate with proper storyboard for visuals on the entire game play. Students will learn to include and illustrate the different interactive and media such as buttons, audio and animation that are required in the game.

GD104 - 3D Character Design and AnimationThis module will train students on the principles and practices of character design and development. Studies include the conceptual development, the appreciation of character aesthetics, and training on psychological, social and physiological characteristics that contribute to the appearance of characters in the game. Study on different character development tools for 2D and 3D character design.
