WELLBURN MINI-BUS APPEAL
DO NOT BE AFRAID
It’s an un-nerving experience to be caught out in a small boat when, without warning, the sea suddenly changes from peaceful blue waters to angry mountainous waves. The power of a stormy sea is so overwhelming that it can become a frightening ordeal. We all have experienced fear, so we can appreciate the plight of the apostles in the storm-tossed boat. In desperation they turn to Jesus who is asleep in the boat, seemingly unaware of the danger, and indifferent to their peril. With angry shouts they awaken him: ‘Master, do you not care that we are going down?’ This story has a thoroughly modern ring to it. We can easily make a connection between the storm at sea and the trials and sufferings of our own lives. Troubles, disappointments and misfortunes come our way from time to time and severely test our faith. Although we will not readily admit it, sometimes we feel disappointed with God when set-backs bring sadness and anxiety into our homes. As parents, it’s hard to stand by and watch our children make a mess of their lives, especially when we have done our best to set a good example and bring them up according to true Christian values. We are tempted to react angrily with God and ask: ‘Why don’t you intervene and stop all this heartbreak?’ Feelings such as these are deeply human, very understandable and nothing of which to be ashamed. Our reactions are no different to the apostles: ‘Lord, do you not care?’ When God does not give an immediate answer to our prayer, we lose heart, panic and have a frightening sense of drowning beneath the waves of despair. The truth is, ours is a stormy world and God does not give any ready answers that satisfy our human questioning. We want him to justify himself for what he does or fails to do, to account to us for his creation. There are mysteries in nature beyond our solving and suffering is one of them. Remember, God did not take away suffering and death, even from his own Son. There can be no answer to these questions except one inspired by faith and faith is what we lack. Today’s gospel should give us hope. It shows us that Jesus is always near, hidden in the heart of suffering. It calls on us to have faith and to take Jesus seriously because he alone can give us courage and inner peace which casts out fear on the stormy voyage of life. If only we realise that the almighty God is with’ us we have the power to dispel all the fears that come our way.
