Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock 2020 Saturday April 25th is this year’s date for the
Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock.
In recent years the numbers travelling from Dublin
have improved greatly, and last year we ran two
coaches from St. Mary’s alone, over 100 people.
The trip is a whole day outing departing at about
7.45 am and returning sometime after 9.00 pm. We
break the downward journey at the Longford Arms
Hotel for morning coffee and a scone, and on the
return trip we stop here again for a full and very
tasty four course dinner. The all-inclusive cost of
the trip is €47 and bookings can be made through
the parish office or at the Sacristy. As places are limited early booking is advisable.
Last year our own Lucan Chorale were invited to lead the music at the Pilgrimage Mass celebrated by
Archbishop Diarmuid and made such a great impression that they have been invited again this year.
Knock is our national Marian Shrine and a much-loved place of pilgrimage for people of all ages. In
recent years a major refurbishment programme has been carried out and the Basilica has had a major
facelift. Within the grounds of the shrine there is a Reconciliation Chapel where confession is
available throughout the day, there is also a Chapel of
Adoration where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for quiet
prayer time. At the rear of the original church of Knock is the
Apparition Chapel where local people witnessed the
extraordinary vision on 21st August 1879. There have been
many accounts of healings at Knock and many others report
experiencing a spiritual uplift and sense of deep peace from
their visit.
There is also an excellent and well-stocked bookshop near the
basilica selling also a variety of religious goods, as well as a
museum exhibition of life in Knock in 1869, well worth a
visit.
Why not join us on this year’s pilgrimage, it promises to be an
enjoyable and uplifting journey in faith together.

Know your rights: Jobseeker’s Benefit for self-employed people Question:
I have run my own company for several years,
but things have become very difficult lately. I’ve
always understood that being self-employed
meant that I didn’t qualify for unemployment
benefits but I heard that there have been changes
lately. Will I qualify for social welfare if my business goes bust?
Answer:
You may qualify for the new Jobseeker’s Benefit
(Self-Employed) (JBSE), if you are no longer self-employed. To qualify for JBSE, you must
have lost your self-employment involuntarily and
not because of a temporary shutdown or seasonal
closure. However, you do not have to cancel
your registration for taxes with Revenue to
qualify.
You must also be:
Aged between 18 and 66
Unemployed – you can work as an employee for
up to 3 days per week and still be considered
unemployed Capable of work – if you have an illness or
injury, you may qualify for a different social
welfare payment and should talk to your GP and
local Citizens Information Centre or INTREO
office.
Genuinely seeking full-time work
You must also satisfy the social insurance
(PRSI) contributions conditions. You need:
At least 156 weeks of Class S contributions or at
least 104 weeks of paid Class A or H PRSI since
first starting work.
52 weeks of Class S contributions paid in the
governing contribution year. This is the second-
last complete tax year before the year in which your claim is made. So, for claims made in 2020,
the governing contribution year is 2018.
If you do not qualify for JBSE, you may get
Jobseeker’s Allowance.
If you have 260 or more Class S PRSI
contributions, you can get JBSE for up to 9
months. If you have fewer than 260 Class S PRSI
contributions, you can get JBSE for up to 6
months. If you are over 65, you may continue to
be paid until your 66th birthday, even if your
claim is due to end before that date.
The maximum rate for JBSE in 2020 is €203.
You may be entitled to an increase for your
spouse or partner, and children.
You should apply as soon as you are no longer
self-employed. To apply, you fill out a UP1
application form and bring it to your local Intreo
Centre or local Social Welfare Branch Office.
Further information is available from your local
Citizens Information Centre.
This lovely place that found Us? My wife and I (Janise) met our friends Bernie
and Michael Cummins 18 years ago in Great
Ormond St. Children's Hospital in London. A
strong bond soon formed as we shared a common
goal. To both have our boys fit and well. And
with us.
Our friendship bond blossomed and thankfully
we visited Lucan. We indeed found that the
Cummins, were typical of the area. Friendly,
welcoming, warm and homely Irish people.
Janise and I have visited Lucan several times
over those years. Trips further afield also, to see
the delights of this Emerald Isle.
I only have praise for the people and warmth that
genuinely comes from "the locals". Even when I
sat in an English Jersey in The Ball Alley watching Ireland being taken apart in the six
nations. Tables were turned the next year.
Bernie saves All the Lucan newsletters for my
visits. Love the history sections.
Unfortunately Michael hasn't been too well the
last few years. But he faces his illness in typical
Irish form. Head held high a proud man.
God willing we will share many many more
good times in Lucan
David and Janise Mullett Suffolk England
Many of you will be
familiar with and
indeed will have
walked through the
opening at the top of Esker hill which pathway
leads to the steps going down to the main Lucan
road. If so you will have noted the incremental improvements which have been carried out by
Lucan Tidy Towns so that this has now become
an oasis in the midst of our busy world. Some of
our initial work consisted of cutting back
overgrowth on either side of the pathway as well
as mowing grass, planting trees, shrubs and
flowers, and finally placing seating so that the
community could enjoy a moment of calm,
looking down on our beautiful tree filled and
church spired village.
Many many hours, weeks and years have been spent by our volunteers on this project. It was
initiated and led by one of our members with
enthusiasm, creativity and hard work. We
specifically name this area as one of our projects
when submitting our annual application for the
National Tidy Towns competition. We have been
encouraged and rewarded by positive comments
from the adjudicators and given advice about
future enhancement of the area. Needless to say
it is still a work in progress. Our focus in recent
times has been on promoting a greener environment. To this end we commenced
development of a small compost area and also
allowed parts of the area to grow wild - all in
keeping with the National Biodiversity strategy.
On Monday last, members of Lucan Tidy Towns
were made aware that a significant part of this
green space area had been fenced off by a local
resident. Our members are very disappointed and
aggrieved by this turn of events.
We are presently in discussion with our local
councillors as to how best to respond.

LECTIO DIVINA Having studied Theology some years ago in
Maynooth I took part with a group praying
through the Scriptures (Lectio Divina). I was so
impressed with it that I said to myself I would
love to get involved in this form of praying. It is
divided into four parts: Reading, Mediation, Prayer and Contemplation. It is a very old form
of praying going back to the 3rd century. It was
practised by the monks in the 6th century. There
was a big revival of it after Vactican11.
When I heard Lucan parish were looking for
volunteers to host Lectio Devina during the
season of Lent I was very excited to take part in
it. I volunteered to host it in my home.
Unfortunately I missed the first week as I had
arranged to visit my daughter in France. To make
matters worse, our flight was cancelled due to a
technical fault and I missed this week’s Monday
2 March. I would like to apologise if anyone
turned up.
I will be hosting it for the next 4 weeks Monday
9th,16th,23rd, and the 30th March at 7.30 pm
in my home. All are welcome. Feel free to ring
me if anyone has any queries.
Thanking you.

Pathways for a United World
Don’t just give up – Take Up!
During Lent, we propose that every day at noon, we stop for a moment of silence or prayer to ask,
together, for the gift of peace and focus our
personal commitment to building it wherever we
live.
We are doing this together with others involved
in the United World Project.

Group Thursdays
10.30am to 12 noon
in St. Mary’s Parish Centre, Lucan
A Reader writes….. Lucan is a pleasant place. Nestled in the wooded
valleys of the Griffeen and the Liffey, it is well-
wooded, rich in stone walls and with a number of
green spaces, many maintained by Lucan Tidy
Towns volunteers. One of those green spaces is
located opposite the entrance to Canonbrook House on the road from Lucan Road to the
cemetery.
This green space is the subject of my letter. It has
remained undisturbed for longer than I can
remember, quietly looked after by a Tidy Towns
volunteer on a weekly basis for more than ten
years. He cut the grass, planted shrubs and
flowers and maintained the path which leads
down to the main road.
This week a fence has been erected and an attempt made to expropriate a large slice of this
public land. This is a cold and calculated insult
and challenge to all Lucan residents. All
residents have paid for those open spaces. The
cost was included in the price we paid for our
homes.
Care and protection of the environment is the
responsibility of each and every citizen. Public
representatives are duty-bound to protect and
preserved the beauty and integrity of our limited
open spaces. Any encroachment is a crime and theft. I call on the individual concerned to
remove the illegal fence and I call on each public
representative to protect the open spaces which
are being so beautifully maintained by Lucan
Tidy Towns.
If necessary a more formal legal approach will be
initiated and pursued.
Yours truly,
Hugh Mulrooney.
Thank You I would like to thank the kind lady who came to

The Gaze
The woman drew water from the well
Yet her gaze observed all within her vision
The slapping of the clothes against the rocks
The washerwoman hummed and worked her way through
Shirts and trousers and pinnies and shawls and bedding
And smaller garments with unmentionable names For this was Monday.
Her eyes wandered to the fields beyond where slowly stealthily
Farm labourers with bowed heads bent over shovels
Digging down into the earth turning the sod in a rhythmic silence of duty Under the watchful eye of the farm
steward Observing, noting, keeping check
that they did not break their silence Or waver from the task in hand.
The woman’s eyes survey all in silent observance
A trait inherent from her mother and grandmother
Noting a flicker of discontent Perceiving the droop of a tired
shoulder Discerning the haunted eyes
masking worry Her integrity of vision seeing beyond
life itself to its core.
The woman finely tuned to the ebb and flow of life
Her wisdom guiding her judgement Knowing when to speak, to suggest,
to advise, to pray Quietly and stoically dispensing guidance in her innate manner
For the betterment of all.

St Joseph’s College Opening of our Time Capsule! Last Friday was
a very exciting one for St Joseph’s College, as
we opened our school's Time Capsule! Joey’s
ECO Club buried the Time Capsule in 1996. We
were delighted to welcome back some of our past
teachers and students for the occasion! It was lovely to see past teachers Clare Carroll (and her
husband Damien), Catherine Dardis, Maeve
Mason and Aoife Smith (also a past pupil and
ECO Club member) and past student and ECO
Club member Mayor and Cllr Vicki Casserly.
What was in the capsule?
• Video Cassette (we are transferring the
contents to a format that we can share)
• 2 x Tape Cassettes with music of the
90's! (Many of our current students had
never seen a cassette before)
• Photographs of students and teachers
• Survey of peoples vision of the future
• Local Newspapers and Magazines
• A list of the most popular names in
1996 and predictions for names for the
future
• Coins in use in 1995
• A list of students and staff of St Joseph's
1995/96
Unfortunately water got into the Capsule and
damaged a lot of the items, particularly the paper and photographs! Nevertheless it was a lovely
occasion and an opportunity for past and present
students and teachers to meet. A very big thank
you to everybody who came along and thanks to
Ms Butler for organising the event! Thank you to
the Liffey Champion for photographing the
event. Video and photos of the event are on our
website.
Staff and Students, past and present, eagerly
await the opening of the Time Capsule!!
In light of the Covid-19 – Coronavirus and
following a meeting by St Joseph’s College,
Board of Management, a decision was made to
postpone the 4th year Spanish Tour until late
September/early October 2020. We sincerely
regret the inconvenience and disappointment this

Adamstown Community College Guadeloupe Trip: A group of twelve students
along with their teachers spent 10 days in
Guadeloupe as part of our Erasmus exchange
with Lycée des Droits de l'Homme. The group
visited the memorial Acte museum, a sugarcane
plantation, Guadeloupe Zoo and some beautiful beaches. In school they worked together on their
Erasmus projects based on 'The History of our
Ancestors' and 'Literature.' Students and teachers
had the opportunity to visit a range of classes in
the school and met some wonderful teachers and
students. We also learnt about Guadeloupe's
traditional dances, music and games. The trip
was a great success.

The Promise of Spring
Leave the coat on or take it off? Coals on the fire and heaps of turf Chapped are my lips from the wind and the cold Dull is my skin, I’m feeling old.
The nights are dark But light will come soon I’m not too convinced While I stare at the moon.
Big woolie jumpers, thermals will do A trip to the shops But return looking blue. Hot tea, toast or stews Better get em down ye
Before the others are due. I’m tired of the darkness, the cold and the rain Will I ever see the blessed sun again.
“Not long now” my mother would say Passing the daffodils that swoon and sway. I’m still not convinced This spring has sprung at all For I’m still in my coat

Tree maintenance: The Tree Maintenance
Programme for 2020-22 was presented last week.
As part of this programme, the Council focuses
on entire estates rather than individual trees. I
was pleased to see estates where the need for tree
maintenance has been raised with me feature,
such as Rosewood, Foxborough, Cluain Rí and
Colthurst. The Council have committed to
providing quarterly updates on tree maintenance and I will communicate this update back to
residents.

and I will also make it available for viewing in
my constituency office.

presented us with their preferred route for a
Greenway to run through Lucan village and onto the Royal Canal. Again there will be a public
consultation in relation to this project and if any
residents wish to discuss it please feel free to

Transport Users Very disappointed with the NTA agreeing
funding of almost one million euro for a half
backed cycle lane on the Quays that will cost over twenty million euro in four or five years if it
is ever finished. This will undermine a
satisfactory bus solution for the city centre,
people with a disability will be the worst effect,
planners don't care. The city centre is in a sorry
mess right now, there is a simple solution the
Quay Bus Contraflow with a new safe concept
for cycling, that will make Dublin great. Buses
operated very successfully at the Quay wall until
1982, then traffic on the Quays were changed to
facilitate more vehicle traffic, this has led to
traffic congestion ever since. It’s still not too late to rectify this problem.
Our transport meeting next Saturday March 14th
in Wynn's Hotel at 11am will set out to solve this
problem, drop in if you are passing we need your
support.

Please take note that on
Monday next, 9th March, one
such meeting will take place,
but this meeting, a General
Meeting, will be held in our
Shed at Broadmeadows,
Newcastle Road, starting at noon and finishing
one hour later. Rereading the last sentence, this
meeting will take place just before lunchtime and
NOT in the evening. This will be a different,
unique occasion.
We hope that it will be the first of many in our Shed.
Will we see you at our Shed on Monday next at
noon?
Please come along and make it a memorable day. Once again, Monday morning at noon!
A Message from the Chairman
As a club we need to fundraise annually in
excess of €90,000, that’s just to keep the club
going, sustain a clubhouse, grounds and over
140 teams in competition.
Hence, we recently surveyed members in order to
gauge the appetite for a “Rock The Lock” style event. The response was low, and as such we
cannot risk the investment required to run such
an event where we could incur large losses were
the event not supported.
Our need for fundraising stems from the fact that
it costs over €440k annually to run the club, of
which we raise €240k in membership fees. (Note
that detailed accounts are available in our
annual report).
We control our expenditure very carefully with
facilities costing over €110k a year, team expenses almost €200k (including €60k GAA
affiliation fees), with loan repayments,
insurance, interest charges and any
administration costs making up the remainder.
All the work done by members in running the
club, managing teams, and ground maintenance
is done on a purely voluntary basis.
The gap of €200k in our funding is made up
from rental income of €40k, sponsorship of
€40k, variable Lotto income of about €25k,
Shop commission of €10k, and fund-raising
events of over €90k (including our Christmas Draw, Annual Golf Classic, Race Day, and
other events).
We are very grateful to the groups that undertake
fundraising events to help make up that deficit
and equally so to all those who support such
events.
We will communicate a variety of events in the
coming months and would appreciate your
continued support.
Sincerely
Michael Bowler
