We will explore the following questions

today… Why are images and videos so

important to the learning process? What are the digital skills that

ministry leaders need today? How do we create, curate, and utilize

videos and images in our ministry?

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

How important have images been to mankind’s communication? What role have they played as cultures talk to one another?

And just how central will they be to our future, as information becomes ubiquitous yet ideas become more

complex?

Pictures & images are a timeless language...

According to Tim Elmore, “Since the turn of the 21st

century, significant progress has been made in our understanding of the

human brain. Neuroscientists’ research

helps us now recognize the role of the right and left hemisphere, how males

develop more slowly than females in adolescence,

the importance of the pre-frontal cortex, and what

causes us to both remember and forget

ideas.”

Why is Teaching with Images so Effective?

The majority of people are visual learners.

Pictures stick.

Metaphors can provide a language for people.

Pictures can accelerate understanding.

Why are images

so powerful

?

Fostering visualization of any content (curricular or otherwise) by targeting

and using the occipital lobe as the central point of processing the

information is one of the strongest ways to help that material enter the

brain… and stay there even as external stimuli compete for attention.

When can we use videos or images in gathered

events? As an icebreaker

To connect to their experience To invite them to name their experience

To surprise and capture attention To tell a story

To summarize a main idea As part of prayer

1. Search for photos that are approved for use.Creative Commons licensed pics -- You can search for photos that are free to use (with some restrictions) through Creative Commons. Usually this means you have to attribute the photo to the owner and link back to their site.

2. Wikimedia Commons offers free media files anyone can use. (Creative commons rules still apply.)

3. Buy a subscription to a stock photo site -- This can be pricey up front but then you have access all year. There are also sites that you can pay per pic. (Here is one example of a subscription service. Thanks to Janice Hardy for that suggestion.)

4. Use free stock photo sites.

Creators vs. Curators

46% of adult internet users post original photos or videos online that they themselves have created. We call them creators.

41% of adult internet users take photos or videos that they have found online and repost them on sites designed for sharing images with many people. We call them curators32

CONTENT CURATION (Beth Kanter) is  the  process of sorting  through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and  organized way around a specific theme. Picking the best content that is important  and relevant to share with their community. http://www.bethkanter.org/content-curation-101/
