History of Storytelling

Prior to the writing systems, storytelling was the

only tool to pass down the beliefs, traditions,

After the invention of the printing press in 1450,

storytelling became even more important

As the oldest form of education, storytelling

contributes uniquely to children’s language and

literacy development

Storytelling is found in all types of teaching as an

instructional strategy or a learning tool

Page 4: Digital Storytelling Training

What is Digital Storytelling Uses new digital tools to help ordinary people to tell

their own real-life stories

is the practice of combining narrative with digital

content, including images, sound, and video, to create

a short movie, typically with a strong emotional

component.

can be instructional, persuasive, historical, or reflective.

is normally 2-5 minutes long

Can be effectively applied to nearly

any subject

Current Teaching & Learning Practices

Educators at all levels can use digital storytelling in

many ways:

introducing new materials

helping students learn to conduct research, synthesize

large amounts of content, gain expertise in the use of

digital communication and authoring tools

helping students organize their ideas as they learn to

create stories for an audience, and

presenting their ideas and knowledge

in an individual and meaningful way

More Examples

Students at higher level, such as doctoral

students, can use digital storytelling to reflect

their understandings on the complex theories.

Example of a story on understanding the

instructional design

Digital storytelling is a highly motivating

strategy that can make reflection concrete

and visible. Example of a story in

professional e-portfolio

Why is Digital Storytelling?

An effective, meaningful, enjoyable, and creative way to enhance teaching and learning.

Facilitating the convergence of four student-centered learning strategies:

student engagement

reflection for deep learning

project-based learning, and

the effective integration of technology into instruction

Why is Digital Storytelling?(continues)

Research has found:

DS helped students organize and express their

idea and knowledge in an individual and

meaningful way (robin, 2005)

DS enhanced employability portfolio

development (Morehead, et al, 2007)

DS increased social skills for children with

disabilities (More, 2008)

DS increased reading comprehension (Royer &

Patricia, 2009)

When is Digital Storytelling

Whenever, a teacher wants to

Enhance student learning

Enhance student motivation

Enhances student engagement

Some Ideas of Using DS

Create a timeline that moves for a historical

events

Make your movie morph for a science class,

present the stages of a plant development

Demonstrate things you cannot bring to class

Share the classic in a fresher way

Try a different angle of math by sharing all the

ways that angles appear in daily life

Start a lively debate by sharing the pros and

cons of an issue with photos

Page 18: Digital Storytelling Training

Challenges of Creating a DS

Creative challenges

Decide on a topic

Content matches graphics and music

Voice synchronizing with story

Technical challenges

Large file size

Uploading speed

Fizzy pictures

Wrong format

(.mswmm, .wlmp vs. .wmv)

Page 19: Digital Storytelling Training

Procedures

Make your plan: define your purposes, analyze your audience, and decide the tools to be used

Write an initial script, plan an accompanying storyboard.

Collect/create images and music

Create your digital story

Evaluate/modify your story

Publish your story

Conclusion

Digital storytelling provided students with

opportunity for reflection, critical thinking, and

problem solving

Digital storytelling is a valuable learning tool

and plays an important role in education

Digital storytelling is a vehicle to facilitate

learning and has the potential to become a
