Many of them were experiencing negative attitudes and behaviors, with feelings of being angry and overwhelmed

A lot of them had low self esteem, and low energy. All symptoms of teenage depression, a condition that affects about 20% of teenagers before they become adults

Some of them worked in a large group, using holidays like Halloween as an opportunity to Trick or Treat for canned goods to fill local food pantries

So did the teenagers This is an important topic. So important that FCCLA devotes an entire National Program to the topic of Community Service

And it relates to my two favorite Family and Consumer Sciences National Standards 1.2.7: Demonstrate leadership skills and abilities in school, workplace and community settings; and 1.2.8: Analyze factors that contribute to maintaining a safe and healthy school, work and community environments

Most students our age tend to be oblivious to the things they can do to help improve their communities, but that doesn’t mean all teens don’t help their communities

Common service projects for some our age include fundraising, food drives, and highway clean-ups. Although these opportunities are available, some just don't feel like doing it so they choose to ignore these chances

Although there is a vast world of service opportunities available, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin

Social media can be a great place to start. Many teens are familiar with how this works to connect with others,

and a simple post on one social media platform yielded over 20 suggestions for places we could volunteer in our own community within the first hour.

I especially enjoyed making dog and cat toys for the humane society. Through this opportunity, I learned more about what the humane society really does and what they need more of.

For both of us, when we finished our individual volunteering experiences we felt happy, accomplished and uplifted. That’s why we wanted to make this video to help other teenagers understand the benefits of volunteering. Our goal was to reach 100 teenagers by sharing this video on social media platforms.

That leads us to the benefits of community service. When it comes to community service everyone feels different and gets different benefits. Those benefits can range from mental benefits to physical benefits.

According to helpguide.org most people after volunteering feel the mental benefits of increased self-confidence and lowered amounts of depression.

And health.harvard.edu tells us that people who volunteer have a lower mortality rate in relation to those who don’t volunteer.Volunteering has also been shown to lessen symptoms of chronic pain or heart disease.

And volunteering isn’t just good for the volunteer, it’s great for the community as well

According to the American Sociological Review, a study found that increased community volunteerism is correlated with reduced rates of fmurder, violent crime, and property crime.

Although it might not be something you’ve really considered before, the statistics are pretty convincing
