The main purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of employee trade union (USDAW)
activities on management of Tesco Imperial wharf. This is study would provide detailed
information along with each section such as literature review, research design, methodology
and final conclusion.
1. Background of the studyTesco has its own employee trade union which is known as USDAW. It stands for the Union
ofShop, Distributive and Allied Workers is one of Britains largest trade unions with over
414,000 members nationwide. Usdaw is a union formed over one 100 years which has

Usdaw is All about workers lives and winning for members.
2. Rationale of the studyI prefer to select the above topic because this is different and new to carry out the research
when compared with other topics. The main issue of this study is to found that whether this
union activities show its impact on the management or not. From this study I can also found
out some of the problems faced by the employees as well as managers in that Tesco.
Therefore by providing the appropriate recommendations would personally help that store to
improve its standard. Then this would fulfil the main purpose of conducting study based on
this topic and from this specific store would know whats going on and what should be the
next step to sort out those issue to show further progress.

Literature review
This section is based on the literature on the role of the employee union, its activities on
management, issues of employees and employee motivation.
Topic 1: Role of employee trade union
It is to maintain the effective administration, financial and organisational systems forthe members.
It ensure the members it is providing the legal service. To promote and strive for equality and to oppose all forms of discrimination from the
members.
To provide the effective encouragement, training and give them the full jobsatisfaction.
Topic 2: Its activities on management
According to (The times 100) management is defined as things are getting done. It is
managers responsibility to achieve the aim and objectives of business by allocating human
and physical resources. Some of the actions undergone by the union on management system
are.
Take the action against the management if it undergoes the discrimination, work loadand other things harm to the employees.
Providing some ideas to encourage the employees which indirectly increase theloyalty to the store.
Topic 3: Employee motivation
According to Business dictionary motivation can be defined as internal or external factors
stimulate the energy to perform more and achieve goal. The best fitted theory of motivation is
Maslows hierarchy of needs.

However employee union ensure that employee gain all of this at necessary level. If not then
it would arrange to get those things done.
Research methodologies
1. Research philosophyAccording to the topic interpretivism is fitted as my research philosophy.
Location of the research: Tesco Express in Imperial wharf.
Targeted population: All the employees including team leaders and managers.
2. Research strategySurvey strategy is best method I personally believe is issuing questionnaire for the employees
and personal interview from the managers. So it is easy to get the direct answer from them.
3. Research designMy research design is descriptive which is more appropriate to my topic. From this I need to
get the information based on the issues identified.

4. Data collection Primary data collection
As I already mentioned Ive prepared to collect the information from questionnaires for all
employees and from short personal interview from managers. From this I can get the direct
answer from them which is easy for me make a true conclusions.
Secondary data collectionHowever secondary data is important in some extent as it has got some information about
past and present. Ive planned to get some information from the HR department of that Tesco
as I couldnt get this specific information in other sources like internet, books or articles .
5. Data analysis methodIn my study I prefer to move on with qualitative data. Because not all the employees willing
to fill the questionnaire and face interview. So it is better to select this method.
Sampling method Ive chosen is non-probability sampling. This is could be done with
employees who are cooperating with me.
6. Research method limitationHowever both data collection method are needed for my study, I couldnt expect secondary
data would be completed up to date. Its totally based on the management so it might be not
useful for me once its incomplete.
7. ConfidentialityIt is to assure that data Im collecting to do my research is solely used for the academic
purposes. Not for any other purposes. However details provided by the all employees and
managers working are kept separately and confidentially.

8. Ethical considerationsWhen Im preparing the questionnaire I wont really copy anyone else. Before Im issuing the
questionnaire to the employees Ill say about the real purpose why Im doing. So it is my
responsibility to confirm that this is only for the academic purpose not for other legal
purposes.
