Cutting a Whirligig hub

These instructions will help you make the hub for whirligig

CAUTION: Do not make any cuts you are not comfortablemaking. You are responsible for your own safety. These

instructions are how I make this cut. Use your own judgement.

Apply the hub pattern to your wood.

Center punch the center point. This will be used later to drillthe center hole for the steel rod.

Cut the hub on the scroll saw.

Mark the index lines on the edge of the hubat all four corners.

Use a straight edge to connect the lines just transferedfrom the pattern.

Here is the setup. Set your miter gauge to 35 degrees.Clamp a sacrificial board to the gauge.

Pencil position lines.These lines let you putthe hub back in the sameposition.

Clamp the hub to the board using the index lines to centerthe cut.

Set the blade heigh to approximately 3/4” Make the first cut.

If the kerf from the cut is not wide enough to accept the bladejust remove the clamps from the body of the miter gauge.Slightly move the saragicial board and make a second pass. You have to be careful not to make the kerf too wide. makevery small adjustments.
