Introduction

The Digital Music and Sound Arts course programme is a unique, innovative and practice-based course that engages creatively with sound and music in contemporary practices, based upon a broad theoretical underpinning.

The course is part of a distinguished art faculty with a wide range of artistic practices, where our students are guided by the specialised expertise of a research-active staff team.

Introduction

Contemporary practice in sound and music takes place in a complex and fast changing environment where artistic work and technologies continually diversify.

The course therefore explores innovative and hybrid concepts in both the arts and creative industries, where emphasis is put on the relationship between sound / music and other art forms.

Introduction

By balancing sound practices with theoreticalreflection and contextual research of artistic,

cultural and media contexts and their aesthetic implications, the central focus is to create a

culture of exploration with a stimulus for innovation

through experimentation.

As a student you will be encouraged to reflectupon traditional working methods with the aim toexplore and develop innovative concepts and

methods.

Exploring and developing innovative concepts

- main focus areas

1) Sound for the Moving Image – Musical composition and Sound Design for Film, TV, Video, Games and Internet.

2) Sound Art – Sound in relation to other art forms, interactive installations, sound sculpting, sound spatialisation (i.e. sound diffusion) and installation at real and virtual sites.

3) Sound & New Media – Sound and Music in the context of the new digital media, generative composition or interface design, in areas such as computer games, the internet, and apps for mobile media.

Exploring and developing innovative concepts

main focus areas

1) Sound for the Moving Image – addressing screen-based sound and music (sound design and musical composition) for film, video, games, internet and television.

2) Sound Art – addressing sound in relation to other art forms, such as sculpture, installation art, photography, architecture, performance art, environmental art and radiophonics, interactive and interdisciplinary sound practices, sound sculpting, sound spatialisation and installation at real and virtual sites.

3) Sound & New Media – covering sound and music in the context of the new content afforded by the digital media, such as generative composition or interface design, in areas such as computer games, the internet, and apps for mobile media.

Students

Our students come from diverse musical, artistic and stylistic backgrounds.

As a student, you are encouraged to get involved in an exploratory process, which is driven by your own interest and aims to support to find your individual path within the areas of sound and music.

The course is dedicated to the facilitation of creative and experimental approaches to sound and music, giving you strong array of transferable skills preparing you for a wide range of professional choices.

Career Prospects

Together with the many transferable skills taught, this course with a strong focus on creativity and innovative practices in sound and music provides an excellent foundation and training for careers in some of the following areas:

Musical Composition / Sound Design for Film, TV and Video, Games Industry, Music / Sound Production, Radio, Stage i.e. Theatre and Performing Arts, Interactive & New Media and Sound Arts for Galleries and Public Spaces.

Career Prospects

Our graduates have moved on to work in leading organisations such as:

BBC World Service, BBC Radio South East, Radio 5 Live (Germany), Warp Records (UK), and WDR (National Radio) and ZDF (National TV) in Germany, Brighton TV for Beijing Olympics (A-V Post-Production), Royal Shakespeare Company (In-House Sound Designer), Sound / Music Production (UK / Germany / USA), A-V Programming, Composition and Sound Design for Games Companies, Composition and Sound Design for Film, TV + Advertising and as Independent Composers / Sound Artists nationally and internationally. Others have continued their Studies and Research at Postgraduate Level i.e. Masters, PhD including at the University of Brighton.

Staff Team

The Digital Music and Sound Arts lecturers have a strong research background and are specialists in academic and/or practical fields i.e. Music Production, Music Composition & Sound Design, Media Industry, Film / Video, Broadcasting in Radio / TV, New Media, Sound Art, Programming, Sound/ Music Production, Sound Design for Theatre & Contemporary Dance, Studio Productions, Theory and Aesthetics, Interdisciplinary Research).

Visiting lecturers, usually practitioners with special skills, support the permanent staff with additional lectures, workshops and tutorials.

The main function of tutors and lecturers is to stimulate and excite the students’ interest, and work closely with students’ initiatives.

We offer lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, visit events and go on field trips.

- Four modern state-of-the-art Digital Production and Post-Production Studios

- Two sound isolated Recording Booth

- Newly build multi - channel Sound Diffusion Lab

- Dedicated Computer Workstation Area

- Dedicated Tutorial Room

- Dedicated Seminar Room

- Specialized six-channel high end digital field Recorder + 5.1 field Microphone

Dedicated technical support is available via two Sound Technicians and one A-V Technician.

Facilities

Students have free access to all four digital production and post-production studios equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software, high class stereo, 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound speaker systems and two sound isolated recording booths.

In addition, we have a new developed Sound Diffusion Lab where students can experiment with spatial audio-visual projections, multichannel sound and unconventional speaker configurations.

We have a dedicated computer workstation area for individual student use, teaching presentations and demonstrations that is equipped with all taught software

Facilities

A dedicated tutorial and seminar room is set aside for individual and small group consultations and there is a separate workshop area where students build customised instruments and devices.

Additionally, for specialized field recordings students make use or our digital six-channel recorder and 5.1 field microphone.

Applying for the Course

We are a popular course with a history of accepting outstanding students with strong portfolios and consider all applications on an individual basis.

Applying for the CourseApplicants are generally expected minimum grades ABB or equivalent supported by a strong portfolio.  Applicants whose predicted grades fall below these minimum requirements, but who can demonstrate a high quality portfolio, are still encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis.

For the interview, applicants will be expected:

a) to present a portfolio * of their own compositions or sound works. This should be presented as a show-reel of five minutes max. (on a CD or DVD or as a standard audio / a-v file format) containing a selection of works;

b) to demonstrate a good knowledge of musicianship, affinity for experimentation,

awareness of related art forms, and an experience of working with sound/music related technologies;

c) to bring two samples of academic writing. 

Interviews will take place usually between January – May.
