Eye Safety:• Many people spend hours upon

hours in front of the computer • Due to staring constantly at the

screen, some people tend to develop eye strain

• When you are in front of the computer for long amounts of time, eye safety is an important key to be aware of for your health and wellness

Symptoms of eye strain are:• Red, watery, irritated eyes• Tired, aching, or heavy eyelids• Problems with focusing• Muscle spasms of the eye or eyelid• Headache• Backache

Ways to prevent eye strain are: • Position the computer farther away• Minimize light reflections and

glares• Take breaks on focusing to reduce

eye fatigue• Keep the eyes lubricated

Repetitive Stress Syndrome:

A repetitive stress disorder is an injury to a part of the body that is caused by overusing or exerting to much stress on that body part

These conditions are often focused on a joint and usually affect the muscle, bone, tendon or bursa of the joint

However other anatomical features and areas can be stressed and their response to that stress can be an injury

Some stress disorders are:

- Carpal tunnel syndrome - Tendonitis

- Tennis elbow - Blackberry thumb

- Trigger finger

Sound Ergonomic Practices:

Ergonomic — Intended to provide optimum comfort and to avoid stress or injury

All of these tips help reduce unnatural positions and prevent injuries

Setup:

Position your body, monitor, and keyboard in a straight line to avoid uncomfortable positions

Take breaks often to prevent discomfort, tiredness, or strain

Adjust The Chair So:

Your thighs are horizontal

The seat’s back supports the lower and middle back

Your feet rest flat on the floor

Sound Ergonomic Practices Continued:

Trays and Wrist Rests:

Adjust the angle of keyboard trays to keep your keyboard flat

Do not use wrist rests when typing to prevent Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Mouse and Keyboard:

Keep shoulders and arms relaxed

Keep wrists straight

Place the mouse near the keyboard

Monitor:

Adjust the screen to avoid reflection from lights and windows

Keep the screen slightly below eye level to avoid neck strain.

Angle the monitor slightly backwards

Clean your screen regularly

Internet Addiction:Warning Signs:

• Denial and lying about the amount of time spent on the computer

• Lying about what you are doing on the computer

• Excessive fatigue and changes in sleeping habits, such as getting up early or staying up late to spend more time online

• Academic performance worsens because you prioritize the internet before your school work

• Withdrawal from friends and declining interest in hobbies

• Irritability when cut-off from computer use

• Disobedience or acting out

Other Digital Health and Wellness Issues:

Psychological

- Cyber Bullying

- Cyber Stalking

No social interaction

- Without speaking face to face with someone it is hard to build vital social skills needed in the real world

Less time outdoors

- Staying indoors will deprive you of the vitamin D we receive from the sun

Inactivity

- Physical activity is important for a healthy lifestyle. Technology, such as computers, encourages the opposite
