Case study – Emergency Departments

Earlier this year a patient presented at the Emergency Department of the Royal Perth Hospital and collapsed at the Triage desk.

‘The patient had a fluctuating conscious state, was profoundly hypotensive with a sporadic heart beat and was not able to give any medical information,’ said Tiffany Graham, clinical nurse in the ED. ‘Staff were able to view the patient’s My Health Record and found a discharge summary from another hospital, as well as access the patient’s most recent Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), which showed he had recently been dispensed quite a large volume of one particular drug. Staff suspected the patient may have overdosed on this medicine and after consultation with on-call toxicologists were able to commence treatment based on this information.

We wouldn’t have been able to access that information without My Health Record. It’s such an important resource to us.’

My Health Record Benefits: Already changing clinical practice

As at 29 September 2019

The Agency commissioned an independent

study on multifaceted intervention to change

clinical practice using My Health Record (MHR)

in primary care:

• 25% medication de-prescribing: saving

$160.00 to $408.86 per year per medication,

plus a one-time saving of $73.00

• 19% pathology order changed: amounting to

a reduction of 8% of all GP pathology orders

overall.

• Provider uploads to MHR have increased by 190% since March

• Provider views of MHR have increased by 90% since March

• Evidence of a 300% increase in ‘unique’ records being accessed since March

Digital Health LiteracyHealth My Way

• Health My Way is a Good Things Foundation program supported by the Australian Digital Health Agency

• The objective of the program is to increase the digital literacy of more than 4 million Australians who have limited digital skills*.

• Following the pilot program in July 2019 we are pleased to announce the rollout of the program to start form January 2020

• 22.6 million Australians have a My Health Record, but 4 million Australians have limited digital skills.

• Making sure people who have limited digital skills and/or access to resources to access and manage a digital health system is a key element of the Agency’s digital health literacy program

• Through Health My Way, 70 Network Partners will be funded to deliver the program to their communities resulting in:

• 140 Digital Health Mentors trained

• 2,800 community members directly supported to see the relevance of digital health tools and build their skills and confidence in using them

• 5,600 people engaged in the topic of digital health literacy through 70 community engagement events.
