DIGITAL DREAMSTHE POTENTIAL IN A PILE OF
OLD JEWISH NEWSPAPERS
In celebration of its 30th anniversary, the
Isser and Rae Price Library of Judaica
was awarded a UF Libraries mini-grant to
digitize a small corpus of jubilee editions
of Jewish newspapers from around the
world.
The Jewish press of the twentieth
century was an extremely vibrant entity
and an important tool of social change.
The newspaper editors were among the
major Jewish writers of their day.
Thirty-two representative issues were
selected out of a special, hidden
collection of over 200 such newspapers
held at the University of Florida.
The jubilee edition of a
newspaper can provide a
wealth of historical and
social information.
Jubilee editions help
chart the history of the
particular newspaper
in question.
An online collection of
these jubilee editions
provides a key resource
for research into the
history of the Jewish
press in general.

THE PROJECT
Publicity for the
collection will attract
more users to the
newspaper database.
Greater demand for the
materials will help bring
in additional funding for
the entire project.
A large-scale digital
collection of this nature
can inspire future
collaborative projects.
