PlacementProcedures

The placement office makes a careful effort toestablish contact between prospective employers andstudents whose interests are compatible with the typeof work and the location involved. These contactswith students may be made through personal inter-views at the law school or by mail. We are preparedto assist you in filling your needs for permanent em-ployment and for summer clerkships.

There are various ways to accomplish law schoolplacement, and we feel that the two best methods areeither interviewing at the law school or recruiting bymail and establishing subsequent interviews at theoffice of the employer.

Most employers who wish to interview our stu-dents prefer to visit the law school during the FallQuarter and before the Christmas recess which be-gins December 10. Interviews may be scheduled Mon-day through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m.and 5:00 p.m. and, if necessary, on Saturday between9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Unless otherwise re-quested, interviews are scheduled in twenty-minuteperiods. We discourage interview sessions immediatelyproceeding end-of-quarter examinations.

If you desire to arrange interviews at the lawschool, please contact us as early as possible so wecan reserve a date which is convenient for you. In-dicate your interest in interviewing second or thirdyear students and provide information about your

employment opportumtles and applicant specifica-tions. Approximately one week before your scheduledvisit, you will receive the data sheets on those studentswho are interested in discussing opportunities withyou.

If you are unable to come to Athens for per-sonal interviews, we will be glad to inform studentsof your employment needs via the placement bulletinboard. Data sheets of interested candidates can besent to you from the placement office, or you mayseek direct application from the student.

Please direct inquiries to: Director of Place-ment, School of Law; University of Georgia; Athens,Georgia 30602; telephone: area code 404 542-2511.

Law SchoolJournals

Georgia Law ReviewFirst issued in 1966, the Georgia Law Review is

now an established legal periodical published fourtimes a year with a national circulation of 2000.

The publication is directed by a Managing Boardconsisting of the editor-in-chief, executive editor, man-aging editor, and eight specialized editors. The Edi-torial Board of the Georgia Law Review incorporates33 writers and researchers into the publication.

Editorial positions are limited to students of topacademic rank who have demonstrated outstandingscholastic ability. Each member of the staff is re-quired to contribute extensive research, original com-position and editorial review in the preparation ofeach issue, which contains two notes, two recentdecisions, and comments.

As a service to the legal profession, the Reviewpresents the results of scientific study and scholarlyinvestigation of legal problems. Each summer issueis devoted to the annual Labor Relations Instituteheld in Atlanta the previous spring.

The Review's additional focus in upcomingissues is the area of special projects. Editorial Boardmembers recently completed an empirical survey ofdisciplinary procedures in relation to due processrights of Georgia prisoners.

Georgia Journalof International

and Comparative LawThe Georgia Law School has gained an increas-

ingly widespread reputation as a center for studiesin international law. The Georgia Journal, establishedin 1969, provides a review of recent literature anddevelopments in this field as well as the publication ofin depth studies by prominent international scholars.

The publication is entirely student-edited. Itsmanaging board is comprised of 12 editors and fiveassociate editors. The editor-in-chief and two execu-tive editors direct the 18-member Editorial Board, which is selected from student applicants who havedisplayed literary ability during a tryout programheld in early fall.

The Georgia Journal annually publishes twoissues and two supplements. Each issue has containedguest-written articles by internationally-known jurists,United Nations legal personnel, or U.S. Departmentof State officials. In addition to student notes andrecent decisions, the Georgia Journal carries a bookreview section.

Of special interest is the publication's coverageof the 1973 Law Day Conference on Problems andProspects of Trade with China and Eastern Europe, which was jointly sponsored by the University ofGeorgia School of Law and the American Bar As-sociation's Section on International Law.

Moot CourtProgram

CompetitionsThe Georgia Moot Court program provides an

opportunity for training in the principles of oral andwritten advocacy. The Georgia Moot Court Boardannually sponsors two intraschool competitions. Dur-ing spring quarter of their first year, individual stu-dents are permitted to enter the Richard B. RussellMoot Court Competition by writing and arguing anappellate brief. By preparing and arguing a morecomplex brief, all second and third year students areeligible to enter, in teams of two individuals, the LawDay competition. After numerous preliminary rounds, the finals of both competitions are held on Law Daybefore distinguished panels of trial and appellatejudges.

In addition to these competitions, all second andthird year students are eligible to try out for variousinterschool competitions. The Law School annuallysponsors teams for the Intrastate Competition whichis sponsored by the Younger Lawyers Section of theState Bar of Georgia, the Phillip C. Jessup Interna-tional Law Competition, and the Southern Intercol-legiate Competition.

The Law School also sponsors a team to theNational Moot Court Competition.

At the close of their second year, individualswith demonstrated ability are invited to join theGeorgia Moot Court Board. Under the direction ofthe Moot Court Executive Committee, composed ofa student chairman and vice-chairmen for each ofthe competitions, board members assist and counselteam members, organize and administer the intra-school competitions, and serve as judges for the pre-liminary rounds of the competitions.

ClinicalEducationPrograms

Legal Aid and Defender SocietySecond and third year students in good academic

standing who have expressed an interest in criminalpractice are eligible for membership in the GeorgiaLegal Aid and Defender Society. There, under thesupervision of a practicing attorney who is also amember of the faculty, they assist indigent personswho are accused of crime or who are experiencingother legal difficulties by counseling, investigating, preparing legal documents, and performing all essen-tial preparations for trial. Since the fall of 1967,through authority of an act of the Georgia GeneralAssembly, third year students certified as qualifiedby the Dean have been permitted to try cases in localcourts.

The Legal Aid Program offers three hours aca-demic credit for a quarter's work of six hours a week.

A subsidiary of the Legal Aid and DefenderSociety is the Prisoner Legal Counseling Project. This project sponsors quarter internships in legal as-sistance at the Georgia Diagnostic and ClassificationCenter in Jackson, Georgia.

Law student interns, under supervision of anexperienced attorney, counsel adult male felons whoare initially sent to the Diagnostic Center before be-ing transferred to correctional institutions throughoutthe state. The project seeks to assist prisoners in thesolution of both personal legal problems and thoseresidual problems connected with their convictions,as these initial legal difficulties tend to impede re-habilitation.

During 1972-73 the Legal Aid and DefenderSociety handled more than 500 civil cases and 380criminal cases. The Prisoner Counseling project con-ducted more than 1800 inmate interviews.

Prosecutorial ClinicPractical education in criminal procedure from

the prosecution's point of view is a benefit of theProsecutorial Clinic. Second and third year studentshave the opportunity to develop investigory and trialskills through assisting local prosecutors in the Mag-istrate's Court, Superior Court, and State Court ofClarke County.

Under the supervision of the clinic director, whois a faculty member as well as assistant district at-torney of Clarke County, students investigate felonycharges through witness and police interviews, con-duct ensuing commitment and various pre-trial hear-ings, draw up warrants and indictments, and prepareappellate briefs.

Clinic membership is limited to 20 students perlaw school class. These students are selected througha try-out program at the beginning of the second yearof law studies. Members can earn up to six quarterhours of academic credit through satisfactory par-ticipation. More than 120 cases were prepared byclinic members during the first six months of 1973.

StudentGovernment

Student Bar AssociationThe entire student enrollment comprises the

Student Bar Association. Through elected officersand a Board of Governors, the SBA coordinates stu-dent-faculty liaison activities and student services. Forexample, the Student Bar Association recently con-ducted extensive studies of curriculum problems andwill offer ideas on curriculum development based onstudent polls. A recent instructor evaluation projectwas initiated to help students and professors identifystrong and weak areas in teaching performance.

Social activities sponsored by the SBA includethe traditional Barrister's Ball, Libel Party, Law Dayreception and orientation parties.

The Georgia Law School Student Bar Associa-tion is very active on a national level in the LawStudent Division of the American Bar Association.
