Use virtual reality (VR) as an alternative to traditional treatment options, for example for phobia

treatment or pain management

Mental health is a growing concern

• Today, approximately 190 000 children and young people suffer from

mental health challenges – close to a doubling of number of cases

occuring over the last decade

• Only 25% received an investigation or treatment within child- and

adolescent psychiatry (BUP) within 30 days (Vården i siffror, 2017)

• Mental illness accounts for approximately 46% of all ongoing sick

leave in Sweden, and this increased by 129% from June 2011 to mid 2017

(Försäkringskassan, 2017)

Innovative solutions can support both prevention and

treatment as an intregrated part of a patient’s daily life

• Internet-based CBT is effective, but requires the engagement of

patients

• Chatbots are designed to provide anonymous, available, non-

judgmental interactions

• The use of a CBT-based chatbot resulted in a significant

reduction in symptoms of depression among college students

who interacted with the chatbot

Chatbots are helping to address mental health

“Ellie” (2014)

• Research project funded by America’s Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

• Developed at the University of California’s Institute for Creative Technologies

• Diagnostic tool capable of reading 60 non-verbal cues a second• Participants who thought they were talking to a robot were more likely

to open up • Potential use case for soldiers

“Woebot” (2017)

• Created by a team of Stanford psychologists and AI experts• Uses brief daily chat conversations, mood tracking, curated videos, and

word games to help people manage mental health• Deterministic rather than running on machine learning technologies• Accessible option, “gateway therapy”• Shown to reduce the symptoms of depression in students over the

course of two weeks

“…the texting option actually reduced interpersonal anxiety, allowing patients to more fully disclose and discuss issues shrouded in shame, guilt, and embarrassment.”

The National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen)

15 June 2018

New mapping of digital care services – a national followup

review is proposed ----------------------------------------------------------------------

”The number of digital doctor visits has increased sharply…”

”Both county councils and private actors offer numerous digital

healthcare services in a number of different areas - such as running

tests, examination, and triage. The services are implemented through,

for example, video calls, chat and text messaging, and there is the

opportunity to meet, among others, doctors, midwives and

physiotherapists."

According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, these principles

should be fulfilled in order for care and treatment to be suitable for digital

care services:

1. Existing statutes or current knowledge management do not require a physical

meeting.Gällande författningar eller aktuell kunskapsstyrning förutsätter inte ett fysiskt möte.

2. The digital service is adapted to the individual patient's needs and

circumstances for using the service.Den digitala tjänsten är anpassad till den enskilde patientens behov och förutsättningarna

att använda tjänsten.

3. The caregiver has access to sufficient information about the patient's health

status and medical history in order to provide good and safe care.Vårdgivaren har tillgång till tillräcklig information om patientens hälsotillstånd och

sjukdomshistoria för att kunna ge en god och säker vård.

4. Necessary follow-up and coordination with other actors is possible.Nödvändig uppföljning och koordinering med andra aktörer är möjlig.

Sverige behöver bli bättre på att arbeta preventivt för att

minska kostnaderna för kroniska och allvarliga sjukdomar.

Seminariet tar sin utgångspunkt i en färsk rapport om
