Intelligent, funny, thrilling - all words seldom used to describefilm music composers. A lot of what we do is responding tovisual images, trying to find a way in to illuminate the scene orthe characters, to hold the audience's hand as we all travelthrough the story.

As a composer, the worst thing that you can be confronted withare characters or stories which appear in varying shades of grey. It's an uphill struggle to make something live emotionally if it'sso obviously unwell on the screen.

This was never going to be a problem with "Sherlock". From thefirst time we saw Benedict and Martin on screen as Holmes andWatson it was obvious that they were bringing fierceintelligence, humour, incredible colour and humanity to theamazing scripts of Messers Moffat, Gatiss and Thompson. Thenit was just a case of trying not to break something that was notonly wonderful… but something we both felt was the best pieceof British TV we had seen in years.

Each of the three episodes here has individual characterthemes, but the thread running throughout is Sherlock's speedof thought. We tried to find ways to be with him musically as hededuced, so we could all enjoy feeling, even for a moment, whatit might like to be him in real life. And to balance that with thegenuine integrity and warmth of John Watson.

It's an extraordinary series to be a part of, created byextraordinary people, from extraordinary stories. Now with some tunes.
