Robot designed to resemble a human

The word robot can refer

to both physical robots

and virtual software

agents, but the latter are

usually referred to as

bots.1)

Robots observe their

environment and adapt

their behavior according

to preset parameters.

Compared to macros and

scripts, software robots

can handle more

complex logic and

operates in a multi-user /

multi-server environment.

WHAT IS ROBOTIC PROCESS AUTOMATION This is no rocket science.

Sources: BluePrism, Genfour, UiPath

• Emulates human execution of repetitive

processes with existing applications.

• A software robot aims to manipulate the

presentation layer of application software in the

same manner a human does.

• Interacts with any application or systems using non-

invasive techniques.

• Robots are provisioned, governed and supported by

IT but trained by business users.

Page 6: DIGILE Foresight 2015 - SW Robotics, Jarkko Vesa

• Takes mundane and repetitive work away from people, allowing people to focus what they do best, e.g. dealing with customers.

• Data entry costs cut by up to 70%.

• An alternative to expensive and lenghty integration projects of IT systems: implemented in weeks – not in months or years.

• Improved quality as RPA can do quality assurance on the fly.

• Enterprise scalability to create a highly responsive virtual workforce.

BENEFITS OF ROBOTIC PROCESS AUTOMATION Increased productivity and quality with a fraction of the costs

WHAT THE ANALYSTS ARE SAYING...

1) Forrester, Feb 2014: Building a Center of Expertise for Robotic Automation

2) Gartner, April 2013: Cool Vendors in Business Process Services 2013

3) HfS, October 2013: Framing a Constitution for Robotistan

• ”Robotic automation enables organizations to automate existing user

actions – as if the user were moving through and across their current raft

of applications.” 1)

• ”[Robots] can be trained to process rule-based activity in an

organization’s information processes, improving accuracy and efficiency.” 2)

• ”Robotic automation software is designed to rapidly model and deploy

the automation so it can be performed by individual delivery teams or

process excellence resources without extensive and lengthy IT

resources.” 3)

SOFTWARE ROBOTS: THE LONG TAIL OF AUTOMATION 50 percent of all automation opportunities are being missed 1)

http://www.wired.com/2014/01/software-robots-long-tail-automation/

“Peter Drucker, the management

guru, raised the issue of white

collar productivity a long while

back, stating that manual workers

through automation had achieved a

50x increase in productivity,

whereas office jobs have remained

static. Robots could change this.”

The Wired, January 17, 2014

THE END OF OFFSHORE OUTSOURCING?

”Don’t fear the robots – unless you’re an outsourcing

service provider overly reliant on cheap offshore labor.” Stan Lepeak, Director, Global Research, Management Consulting at KPMG

IMPACT ON LABOR What will be the social impact of sofware robotics?

https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/2030-your-humanity-top-job-skill-nathan-rose

The biggest immediate danger from artificial intelligence

was autonomous weaponry, followed in the medium

term by disruption to established forms of employment.

Computers have already rendered redundant

millions of once well-paying white collar jobs. (Prof. Russell, World Economics Forum, Davos, January 2015)

IMPACT ON THE LABOR MARKET The typical view to robotics.

BUT THERE IS ANOTHER ANGLE IN THE STORY What if software robotics removes tasks that are...

Boring...

Error prone... Too much to handle...

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FINLAND The Finnish way – sustainable social transformation.

Sources: McKinsey, Oxford University 2013, Etla, Tilastokeskus

In Finland, it has been estimated that 36% of the total inputs of the Finnish workforce could be replaced by robots.

Utilization of RPA in Finnish enterprises can help prevent the outflow of services jobs and revenue streams into shared service centres located in low cost countries

Finland can lead the way in successful implementation of sustainable social transformation in response to the impact of robotic automation

The age ”pyramid” of the population in Finland

is a challenge for the economy, but RPA can

help us in managing the situation.

Page 14: DIGILE Foresight 2015 - SW Robotics, Jarkko Vesa

RPA VENDOR LANDSCAPE The leading RPA vendors are still small and there aren’t very many of them.

“Once a technology is invented, it is very rare that it disappears. You can delay the introduction but it is going to be used. If someone can produce something cheaper and faster, you are competing in that environment.“

ROBOTICS PROCESS AUTOMATION IS HERE TO STAY You can run but you can’t hide.

The Finnish dna in the mobile, software, industrial automation and games industries fits well with the RPA trend and creates major opportunity for Finnish companies.

This requires the establishment of a strong RPA knowledge based in Finland: The design, development, deployment, and operation of future RPA solutions can be viewed as a significant new business cluster.
