First AW-4600AT’s in Hawaii - in the center of the Pacific

NBI installed the AW-4600AT at Tamura’sSupermarkets, in theirstores in Wahiawa andWaianae, located on theisland of Oahu in Hawaii –a seven hour flight fromthe US mainland. Thisfamily owned chain whichfirst started in the 1900’sis now operated by thefourth generation of theTamura family. In additionto these two supermar-kets, they also operateother food stores and

most recently are expanding into the retail wine and liquor busi-ness.

The AW-4600AT wasselected due to its compactsize, reputation for reliableoperation and Super Stretchtechnology. Both stores haverelatively small meat roomsand the compact design ofthe AW-4600AT is perfect forthese stores. Super Stretchtechnology simplifies filminventory and uses less filmthan other brand’s wrappers.Hawaii is a long way from anyindustrial area. All film used there must be sent by ship from thewest-coast of the USA. This makes film relatively more expensiveand therefore film savings is important. Hawaii is not close to anymainland facility so reliable operation and service is also extremelyimportant.

Reliable operation is a function of both the equipment designand the people providing maintenance and service. Young’sScale, our NBI distributor in Hawaii has operated in the islands formany years. They have been successful because they havetrained and professional service technicians. Young’s Scale andNBI have been partners in Hawaii for over 30 years.

NBI supports all wrapper installations fully. Both store installa-tions were completed in one week and were supported by RobWills, NBI Wrapper Specialist and Jack Burton, Mr. DIGI, our WestCoast Regional Sales Manager. Josh Morales provided direct ser-vice to Hawaii for parts and supplies from our NBI Brea office.

Young’s Scale and the NBI wrapper team will continue to worktogether to provide retailers with the perfect solution for their in-store prepackaging operations with the AW-4600AT in Hawaii. Reported by John Baumann, President of NBI

This May NBI closed an orderfor 20 AW-4600AT wrappers forinstallation into various SaveMart stores. As previouslyreported, last year NBI sold andinstalled both the SM-500 andAW-4600AT wrapper into ourfirst Save Mart store. Thatequipment and PBI, our localdealer performed so well thatthis year Save Mart will replace20 other wrappers with the DIGIAW-4600AT system.

The AW-4600AT was selected due to a few of its unique fea-tures. First, Super Stretch Technology will wrap the full range ofpackages produced in Save Mart meat rooms with one roll offilm. This reduces film usage, saves money and increases pro-ductivity. Secondly, the AW-4600AT is extremely reliable. Thiswrapper just runs day after day without missing a beat or miss-

ing a pack. Also, service maintenance costs have been provento be the lowest in the industry. Finally, this order was closedthrough a lot of close coordination between PBI, NBI, TeraokaTokyo Wrapper Div. and Teraoka Singapore Scale System Div.Teraoka Singapore’s effort to meet the customer’s request tochange the clerk function in the SM-720 at the first installation in2008 was highly evaluated by the first Save Mart store. Thismodification was done quickly and effectively by Teraoka Singa-pore and impacted Save Mart for the replacement to other storeswith DIGI Wrappers.

Save Mart, founded in Modesto, California in 1952, operates245 stores in the Central Valley area of northern California. It isone of the most successful family-owned businesses in thesupermarket business in California.

We are very happy to have added Save Mart to the list of DIGIcustomers in the USA.Reported by John Baumann, President of NBI

DIGI, a hallmark standard for Indonesia Retail IndustryAs one of the most economically stable emerging countries in

Asia during the latest financial crisis, Indonesia has enjoyed astaggering growth of more than 4% during 2008-2009. This result has a great impact on the economic growth, especial-ly in the retail market. More and more Indonesian people areeating less often in restaurants and are spending more money insupermarkets and hypermarkets, which helps ensure the growthof DIGI users around Indonesia.

Ever since its introduction in Indonesia by PT. Tritanu, DIGIhas been used in many stores across Indonesia. Three of thebiggest DIGI users in Indonesia are Lion Superindo, Ramayanaand Hypermart.

In 1997, the Delhaize Group - aBelgian headquartered internationalfood retailer with over 2500 stores

now in operation in 7 nations (United States, Belgium, Greece,Romania, Indonesia, Luxembourg, and Germany), enteredIndonesia by acquiring an interest in Lion Superindo, an operatorof 11 stores in Indonesia. The company has grown and by theend of 2008 was operating 63 stores. (updated fromhttp://www.delhaizegroup.com)

Lion Superindo started withthe DIGI SM-80 (stand alonemodel) and one by one hasreplaced these with the SM-80SXand SM-300 Series (Ethernetmodels). In 2008 – 2009, PT. Tri-tanu, DIGI Distributor in Indone-sia, received a sales deal fromLion Superindo for the replace-ment of the old scales includingall other brand scales with 172units of SM-300 Pole and Hang-ing type. Their decision wasbased on a totally supportive dis-tributor that has had a very goodrelationship for 12 years. All theinstallations were finished by theend of June 2009.

By 1989, Ramayana hadbecome a retail chain, consistingof 13 outlets and employing atotal of 2,500 workers. In 1993, a

one stop shopping center was implemented in every Ramayanastore due to the extensive product range and affordable prices.Ramayana continues to grow, covering more cities and buildingan even greater retail chain. Today, Ramayana operates 104stores in 42 major cities. Starting in 1999, Tritanu began supply-ing the SM-80SX to Ramayana Supermarkets and it has been agood business relationship for 10 years.

In May 2009, Ramayana started a new concept for their nextgeneration hyperstore, Robinson Super-market, which was successfully opened inKerawang, Jawa Barat, Indonesia. PT. Tri-

With appreciation toall my friendsDear DIGI Friends,

It has been more than 2 decadessince I joined Teraoka as the InternationalMarketing Manager and started the pub-lishing of this forum, the DIGI News Bul-letin, shortly thereafter for mutual com-munication about what is going onamong DIGI members around the world.

Now, I will be leaving Teraoka at theend of June 2009 after working togetherwith the DIGI members for more than 24years. I am retiring due to physical limi-tations and also in order to pursue somepersonal interests and spend more timewith family and friends.

I can recall very strongly that I alwayswanted to retire at the age of 28. Before

that magic age of 28, I believed there was time to get things done and still retire by thatage. I believed I could do it at that time without really knowing what retirement means. Please do not ask me why I thought that way because I just did.

I found out that the magic of that age was that you can believe anything is possiblewhich is wonderful. I also found out that my idea was not quite right. It was just tooimaginative! So, since then I have just kept working quite hard, going here and therealmost on a level equal to a workaholic if not worse, without taking time for other mat-ters.

Now I am retiring 35 years after my magic age and I can do the things that I alwaysthought I wanted to do!! The biggest challenge for me now is whether I can find enoughstrength in myself for what I wanted to do before! The years of my 60’s could be verygood ones in which to challenge things that may be somewhat different from those backin the magic years.

I have experienced numerous pleasant occasions, successful business deals, therevival of some companies but also found many problems that sometimes led to thecreating and closing of some businesses. Through all this work I have enjoyed doingbusiness with all of my DIGI Friends. I enjoyed my life being with you all. Certainly youhave provided me with a busy and enjoyable schedule after my initial “magic age retire-ment”.

I thank you.I would appreciate it further if you could provide me with continuing friendship until mynext retirement.I wish you all a good life with much satisfaction ahead of you and I look forward to hav-ing the opportunity of meeting with you sometime.

From Turkey Ralf Arditti, Digi/Fiter ElektronikSanayi ve Ticaret A.S.

It was the spring of1985 when I first metMitsunori. I was com-ing down to Tokyofrom Kyoto where Ihad met the Ishidapeople to obtain thedistributorship forTurkey. My idea was to

get a second opinion from a ‘rival’ player. That Friday in March of ’85 was one of

the very first days that Mitsunori had start-ed working as International MarketingManager at Teraoka Seiko. He quicklyfound out, probably through his wide-rang-ing contacts in the industry, that I hadalready been to Kyoto talking to competi-tors. We had a rough meeting, accusingeach other of trying to extract secret infor-mation.

It all ended swiftly when Mitsunori madea very unusual move (coming from aJapanese manager): he invited me to visithis house in Yokohama that following Sun-day!

That trip to Yokohama started a deepand solid relationship between the two ofus which went on for me to become DIGI’sTurkish distributor, then to establishDigi/Fiter and to have close cooperationbetween our two companies throughoutthese past 24 years.

The decision to invite me to dinner wasclassic Mitsunori: grabbing the initiative,re-formulating the agenda, persuadingpartners to a ‘better life’, requiring commit-ment on both sides and sharing a commonoutlook...I have not been disappointed forhaving undertaken that trip.

It’s a hard job being International Mar-keting Manager at Teraoka and it’s proba-bly even more demanding to be the Presi-dent’s Special Assistant. Mitsunori handledboth jobs admirably, with a firm but gentlehand on the rudder and much diplomacyto sooth ruling feathers.

We at Digi/Fiter have long appreciatedhim as a guy with vision, both on the levelof the products and strategy-wise. We willall miss him dearly.

Dear Mitsunori,The first time I met

you was in 1986 inCopenhagen. At thattime the DIGI producthad been marketed for10 years, but we onlyhad a small market

share. You wanted us to grow and becomeNo.1 in all segments for retail scales, withand without printer facilities. Together withyou and your team this happened for us,step by step the share grew, and the resultis that the DIGI brand is the absolute mar-ket leader in Denmark.

Along the way many important and noteasy decisions had to be made and youhave always been ready to support us andsecure the right direction for Teraoka SeikoCo. Ltd. and for us as a distributor.

You have always had an enthusiasticand pragmatic way to simplify a problemand find a solution. This is a big talent andit has been valuable in the important jobsyou have had in the management team ofTeraoka Seiko Co., Ltd.

Now that it is time for retirement, youcan do that with a very good conscience.Teraoka Seiko and the DIGI brand is the

market leader in the retail scale businessWorld Wide and No.1 in all the importantcountries. It is time for the very strong teamof “Young Men” that you and Taka trained totake over and lead the export and supportto be No.1 country by country and they willsecure the future for Teraoka Seiko Co. Ltd.and the DIGI brand.

I wish you and your family all the verybest for the future and hope you will have agood and long retirement. Thanks for all theco-operation and support for us in Denmarkas well our personal discussions along theway. I hope to see you again, maybe at aparty for the next World Meeting.

Time is running reallyfast so that I could nev-er believe Mr. Nakamurais going to retire soon! Ifwe see STE today, weshould not forget greatcontributions of Mr.Nakamura for thesmooth running of STE

as well as strong support to myself. He started to be involved in the STE

operation in 1995~1996 when we had diffi-culties as a young company to supply quali-ty parts and products overseas. As theleader of the STE project, he visited manysuppliers in China with me to talk aboutquality standards and discussed internallywith all departments the progress forimprovements in order to quickly have highquality STE products. He then initiated theDS-685 price computing scale developmentproject with STE people, the world’s 1stLCD price computing scale with a dry bat-tery to run more than 500 hours. This modelmade a miraculous result immediately, with50,000 units installed in a year around theworld!

We faced a lot of difficulties during thepast 17 years. We would see Mr. Nakamurawhenever we had problem--he helped usfind a solution to problems always, no mat-ter what kind of problem! Richard Herbert, Managing Director ofHerbert & Sons Ltd., sincerely sends his message of condolence for the lateBill Lee.

We regret to report the death at his home on11th June of Bill Lee, who was Sales & Market-ing Director of Herbert & Sons Ltd. from 1988until 1996.

Bill first joined us as Marketing Manager in 1981 from previousjobs at ICL and Data Terminal Systems, but left two years later tojoin TEC UK. But in 1988 we recruited Bill back to head up ourSales and Marketing operation, and he soon brought a new vitali-ty and excitement to the company.

Bill had immense enthusiasm for the retail world, and lovedfinding new products and new ways of working to improve retail

efficiency. He built and maintained high level relationships with allof the UK’s top supermarket groups. He was a formidable nego-tiator with both customers and suppliers, but always retainedtheir respect and friendship.

Bill was a frequent visitor to Teraoka Seiko in Tokyo, he lovedto be face to face with Kazuharu Teraoka, Taka Hattori, TakashiKatayama and many other Teraoka staff, explaining exactly thespecifications and price that we needed in order to win that vitalpiece of business. He was often accompanied by customers, and took pride in showing them Japanese hospitality at its best.

Bill left the Company in 1996 to join a checkout furniture sup-plier, but remained in touch with his many friends and contactsat Herbert and Teraoka/DIGI.

We send our deepest condolences to his wife Margaret andtheir children on his untimely passing.
