  • Issue #2

  • 2Well, turns out they were wrong on every count (except, possibly, the last one which is purely subjective anyway). Our first issue a suck it and see, toe in the water launch if ever there was one went global. Within 48 hours of launch, it had been served up like some rare, exotic fruit - to more than 100,000 construction and plant enthusiasts via various social media means. The magazine was read and re-read, shared and bookmarked more times than the words politician and corruption have been used in the same sentence; the video

And they said it wouldn't last! There is already too many plant and equipment magazines, they said; the plant world is not ready for a video-based magazine, they warned; the last thing the construction world needs is another collection of diggers, they advised; Diggers and Dozers is a daft name for a magazine, they wailed.

  • 3content continues to rack up views; and the major manufacturers that didnt appear in our launch issue have been all over us like a nasty rash to secure their place in our second edition. And so, our toe in the water has become a full foot and we are happy to present to you our second bumper edition which is packed to the very gunnels with hot new equipment and some not-so-new-but still unique kit for your delectation and perusal. Most notably, we have EXTENSIVE coverage of ALL the new Caterpillar equipment coming down the pipeline this month, with video footage to match. Herding CatsDiggers and Dozers is fresh back from the famous Caterpillar proving ground in Malaga. And unlike most Brits returning from Spain, we came back not with straw donkeys and sunstroke but with details and cinema-quality footage of some of the hottest new kit to swell the Cat product range.

There was a time when OEMs had lots of cash to slosh about the place; when the financial and environmental cost of flying journalists around the world was considered the norm; when those same journalists happily travelled the globe on those manufacturers marketing dime. But we live in more austere times. Those same manufacturers are loath to host costly press events every other month; and those journalists can (generally) no longer justify a week out of the office to report on a new widget.Today, the major manufacturers tend to condense their machine launches into one or two big annual events. And so, with Intermat creeping ever closer like early-onset Alzheimers, the mighty Caterpillar invited a hand-picked gaggle of trade journalists the collective noun for which is (or should be) a hack of press for a sneak preview of all the new kit that will swell the worlds most comprehensive construction equipment product line over the coming months.

  • 9Of course, while Caterpillars approach to press relations has altered to reflect this austere and carbon footprint conscious age, the approach of the trade press has remained largely unchanged. As a result, those magazines that are bound by the conventions of print and the cost of paper and postage will likely cherry-pick which machines they tell you about and play lip service to or ignore entirely those that they consider unworthy. Here at Diggers and Dozers, we have no truck (if youll pardon the pun) with such logistical shackles. Instead, we have covered ALL the machines that Caterpillar introduced; we have covered all of them in depth; and we have covered pretty much all of them in cinema-quality 4K video too.As Bob Dylan famously once sang: The times, they are achanging.

force capability - saving fuel and lowering sound levels for the most common tasks where maximum productivity is not required. Exhaust aftertreatment utilises a diesel particulate filter to achieve emissions standards. The Cat Hystat system can achieve up to a 35 km/hour top speed for these models with the optional stop-to-shift transmission that allows the operator to choose between max rimpull and max travel speed via a convenient switch on the RH console and automatically regulates speed during downhill travel. The Deluxe cab features two side-entry doors, low-effort electro-hydraulic joystick, suspended pedals, tilt steering wheel, air-suspended and heated seat and optional security keypad. The multi-function loader-control joystick also incorporates transmission and differential-lock controls plus proportional control of auxiliary circuits. The updated display is not only larger and thus easier to read, but also provides more information to the operator such as engine speed. These machines are available with two coupler options, a Skid Steer Loader style coupler, compatible with most skid steer loader work tools, as well as the Cat coupler, designed to work with a full range of Cat buckets, optimised pallet forks and certain competitive attachments. The versatility and operator convenience designed into the M Series are further enhanced with new options, the Road Feature and Load Feature Packages, which include a new electronic, soft-touch keypad for convenient control of most functions. The Road Feature Package includes a Ride-Control system that cushions boom cylinders when the

machine is traveling with a load in rough terrain, smoothing the ride and retaining material. Also, a variable-speed Creeper Control allows ground speed adjustment independently of engine speed for precise control of continuous-operation work tools, such as snow blowers and brooms. An Electronic Throttle Lock automatically maintains (or resumes) a set engine speed to allow work tools to function at a high RPM for maximum hydraulic power. Thus, the Creeper Control and Electronic Throttle work together for optimal work tool performance and ease of operation. Also included are an Implement-Modulation System for adjusting hydraulic response to one of three levels and a Hystat Aggressiveness Control that provides three levels of machine acceleration and directional-change response. These features permit operators to program the machine to their preferences or to job-site conditions. The Load Feature Package includes the Electronic Throttle Lock, Implement-Modulation System and Hystat Aggressiveness Control, while also incorporating additional features to assist operators during the loading cycle: Rimpull Control and Return to DigRimpull Control increases productivity and lowers operating costs by reducing tire slip in poor underfoot conditions, yielding more efficient bucket loading and reduced tire wear. The operator can select among four settings to adjust power at the wheels to working conditions: 60, 80, 90 or 100 percent of the Hystat systems pushing force. Also, the M Series brake pedal functions as an inching pedal during the first half of its stroke, decelerating the machine hydrostatically.

Dial M For LOADERSCaterpillar has taken the wraps off a new and improved range of small wheel loaders.Diggers and Dozers reports.

The new Cat M-Series small wheel loaders - 926M, 930M and 938M are designed to build on the success of K-Series models - 924K, 930K and 938K. The enhanced models feature engineering refinements including new engines that meet Stage IV emission standards and new options and features that further enhance value, operator comfort, and safety. Innovative features introduced with the K-Series carry over to the new M-Series family. With the M-Series introduction, the nomenclature for the smallest model in the family changes from 924 to 926, reflecting the increased capabilities of the new model, compared with those of the 924H and 924Hz. All three new models have increased engine power and higher tip loads for improved performance.A new Cat C7.1 ACERT engine powers the three new M-Series wheel loaders and has a clean emissions module designed to require no operator intervention and causing no disruption of work cycles. The module uses a fit-for-life diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a selective catalytic reduction system, which requires only the addition of diesel exhaust fluid. Regeneration of the DPF occurs passively at a low temperature. The step-less, four-range, electronically controlled, intelligent hydrostatic drive system has been further enhanced to include operator selected power-train modes including a conventional Hystat mode with

aggressive engine braking, refined Torque Converter mode allowing the machine to free wheel down hills and around grades, and an Ice mode setting tuned to maximize control in slippery underfoot conditions. Testing shows that the Torque Converter mode can save up to 5 percent additional fuel in load-and-carry applications and is the factory default setting.M-Series models are efficiently powerful and offer hybrid-type fuel savings by using new power modes, selected via the soft touch button panel:Standard mode offers the same power as K-Series models in ranges 1, 2 and 3 and features a Power-By-Range logic that boosts the available power in range 4 for improved roading speed on uphill grades. In this mode, the engine runs at a lower maximum speed (1,600 rpm versus 1,800-rpm high idle) with no compromise in peak ground speed. The 200-rpm reduction in engine speed is a key enabler to additional fuel savings, compared with K-Series models. Testing shows up to 5 percent fuel savings in composite-work cycles and up to 10 percent fuel savings in specific applications, such as roading,

long load-and-carry applications, and snow clearing. The lower maximum engine speed also significantly reduces in-cab sound levels. Performance mode boosts engine speed to 1,800 rpm to achieve maximum engine power in all speed ranges. More power is available for multi-function work, and the resulting increases in hydraulic speed and power allow higher production. The Caterpillar enterprise telematics solution enables customers, dealers, and enterprise users to determine the location, operation, and condition of connected Cat products. Product Link helps lower owning and operating costs, and the system offers daily operations support and information for business decisions. Through the solutions detailed asset management, customers can see fuel status, work time versus idle time, and upcoming service needs. Included is a three-year subscription to the web-based VisionLink interface, via cellular or satellite connection, for generating summary reports that assist in effective fleet management. The Caterpillar patented, Generation II Optimized

Z-bar loader linkage on the M-Series models delivers the performance and breakout forces of a traditional Z-bar linkage with the parallelism and load- handling capability of a tool carrier. The Generation II lift-arm design, launched with late-model K-Series machines, enhances overall forward visibility, and the redesigned torque tube on standard lift linkages maximizes visibility when the linkage is above the level-arm position. Higher tipping load ratings for the M-Series small wheel loader models, versus the K-Series, also allow the new models to comfortably handle heavier payloads.Electro-hydraulic controls, combined with independent, dedicated, load-sensing variable- displacement pumps for the implement and the steering circuits carry over from the K-Series. The M-Series hydraulic system enhances multifunction performance and allows features such as fine-mode control for fork and material-handling work, push-button programming of lift, tilt, and lower kick-outs, and electronic dampening at cylinder-end stroke and kick out positions. Controls also allow a new feature, Perfect Parallelism, which uses input from rotary sensors in the linkage to provide level lift with 2-degree accuracy for improved site lines to fork tips and improved performance in material handling applications. The M-Series small wheel loaders also introduce several new optional features designed to enhance productivity, operator safety, and serviceability. An available LED light package includes front and rear LED auxiliary work lights, engine-bay LED lights to illuminate routine service points, such as oil and coolant levels, and lighting to illuminate the fuel area. A new Object Detection System is available that uses radar and provides both visual and audible alarms to warn the operator of objects close to the rear of the machine. The class-leading operator station introduced with K-Series models is further refined to ensure all-day comfort and safety for the operator. Larger external mirrors feature a lower parabolic section that allows visibility to the rear tires at ground level, improving safety when working around trenches and when loading machines on trailers.

Operators also can customise M-Series controls by using the new, redesigned secondary display, which is standard. The secondary display is now larger, providing more customization and information. New features available through the secondary display include coded start and operator profiles, application profiles, service-mode and preventive maintenance alerts, independent flow adjustment

for third and fourth hydraulic functions, directional-shift response, ride-control activation speed, automatic-lubrication intervals, bucket- float activation, feather-catch mode, rack snubbing, multiple camera inputs, Perfect Parallelism, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level, and remaining time until fuel fill.

envelope. The MH3022 and MH3024 use the Cat C7.1 ACERTTM engine, rated at 126 kW, and have operating weights of 22.7 and 25.7 tonnes, respectively. The engine meets US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emission standards and features refinements that yield added torque and faster response to changes in load. With a durable, field proven design, the engine now integrates an emissions after-treatment system, which requires no attention other than periodically replenishing the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank. Emissions technology includes the Cat NOx-reduction system, selective catalytic reduction, diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter (DPF), and high-pressure/common-rail fuel system. The DPF features passive regeneration which does not require operator intervention and causes no interruption in the work cycle. The design of the engine and the aftertreatment system results in low fluid consumption for new models, conserving both fuel and DEF to lower operating costs. An engine-idle shutdown system saves fuel by shutting down the engine when it has been idling for a preset amount of time. In addition, the Eco Mode has been refined and reduces engine speed with no reduction of power, providing reduced fuel consumption with no compromise in performance.A new electronically controlled hydraulic system combines with new medium-pressure pumps and new fan pump to enhance hydraulic response and reduce overall load on the engine for greater fuel efficiency. The optional Cat Bio HYDO Advanced hydraulic oil and bio-diesel blends up to B20 can be

used without reducing the life of these systems. The exterior of the new models has been completely restyled, including a new operator station, featuring higher pressurisation, larger door with added glass, new windshield with parallel wipers, new mirrors (with a heated option), new rain visor and light protectors, larger skylight, standard rear-view camera (housed in the redesigned counterweight), and a right-side camera with a separate in-cab monitor. Cabin guards are available for additional operator protection when required.Entering and exiting the cabin is now easier with redesigned three access steps and a newly design door handrail. A fourth step is integrated directly into the skirt of the upper carriage, just below the cab door. Inside the cabin, the left-hand console tilts to facilitate entering and leaving the seat, and the console includes an integral safety lever. Also new is the steering wheel, which is height adjustable and features a tilting column. The new cabin has an interior sound level of just 71 dB(A), and vibration levels have been reduced. The standard lighting package for the new models, now includes a counterweight light (enhancing the rear-view camera function at night), three cabin-mounted lights, and light on the boom as well as new stick lights. Standard LED lights replace the previous halogen lighting for enhanced illumination, lower power consumption, and longer life. Optional guards are available on the front linkage lights for applications in which falling and flying debris are hazards. Two counterweights are available to match application needs, increase stability, and provide great lift capacities.

Throttle Shifting allows shifting at lower engine speeds, resulting in improved fuel efficiency, quieter operation, and easier low-speed manoeuvring. As the new C Series trucks, with permanent six-wheel drive, encounter changing terrain and underfoot conditions, the Automatic Traction Control feature adjusts the level of engagement for the clutch locks in the inter-axle differential and in the three axle differentials. The system makes these adjustments while the machine is moving and does not require operator intervention. The system maintains optimum traction for steady production, relieves the operator of manually engaging the system, saves

fuel by proportionally applying the locks based on operating conditions, and does not hinder tight-manoeuver steering.Retarding control for the C Series models can now be set to fully automatic, in addition to manual control. In automatic mode, the machine manages retarding through a combination of engine brake, gear selection, and service-brake application without operator intervention. The automatic system is available for both forward and reverse operations, and the manual system provides two levels of engagement for more experienced operators.

new interlocking front window system, updated operator interface controls and 100 percent pilot controls provide a best-in-class operator station and customer value. The E2 series models are equipped with the digital control panel specially designed for Cat Mini ExcavatorsCOMPASSComplete Operation, Maintenance, Performance, and Security System. Built into the COMPASS monitor are an anti-theft system, which requires a five-digit alphanumeric password to start the machine, an automatic engine-idle selection, which drops engine rpm to idle after 4 seconds of inactivity and an adjustable auxiliary-flow control for work tools. Both main-line and optional secondary auxiliary-hydraulic systems can be adjusted on a scale of 1-15 through the monitor for added control. The E2 Series models also continue to include the standard features and benefits customers expect from a high-quality mini hydraulic excavator. For example, automatic two-speed, 100 percent pilot controls, superior bucket rotation, blade float and safety are built into every Cat mini excavator. The automatic two-speed feature allows the operator to put the machine in high speed (rabbit) and not worry about manually kicking down to low gear while turning, digging, or roading in tough conditions. One

hundred percent pilot controls offer consistent and long-lasting controllability with reduced owning and operating costs often associated with mechanical linkage. The unique design of the Cat MHE linkage, bucket, and cylinders on the 305E2 and 305.5 E2 allows for an industry leading 200 degrees of bucket rotation. The unique bucket shape also maximizes the volume of material per scoop without sacrificing digging performance and the boom and stick cylinders have built-in dampening to cushion the impact of the rod & piston against the stops when it reaches full extension or retraction.Additionally, the blade float function allows the operator to drag the blade backwards (away from the cutting edge side) and the blade will float along the contour of the ground with only the weight of the blade bearing down to smooth the site after grading and backfilling holes leading to ease of operation and productivity. Finally, all three models are ROPS, TOPS and Top Guard Level 1 certified; include the Cat Interlock (hydraulic lockout) System; a certified accumulator which allows for auxiliary pressure to be released, making connecting and disconnecting work tools safer and easier; and a travel alarm. All of these safety features are standard on the E2 model lineup, with the travel alarm optional in Europe.

The blade and track combination might appear unchanged. But the new Cat D6N is a dozer that is packed to the gunnels with new technology to make the machine more productive and easier and more accurate to operate. Diggers and Dozers Reports

The new Cat D6N dozer delivers a 10- to 15-percent boost in fuel efficiency (compared with its predecessor model) and adds customer value with a number of new technology features that boost productivity and ease the operators job. The D6N is powered by a Cat C7.1 ACERT engine rated at 124 kW, and meets EU Stage IV emission standards.Fuel-efficiency gains result primarily from the D6Ns new direct-drive transmission, which uses a torque converter to provide the power multiplication for moving productively through the cut, as well as a lock-up clutch that allows the D6N to carry loads in direct drive for optimum fuel efficiency. Productivity gains in typical applications are estimated at up to 10 percent, compared with the previous model. The D6Ns standard Enhanced Auto Shift system, combined with lock-up-clutch control, allows operators to select the optimum ground speed for the load being moved, resulting in further fuel savings. In addition, an electronically controlled, variable-speed demand fan automatically adjusts its speed to conserve both engine horsepower and fuel, while also significantly lower sound levels.A full range of Cat Connect technologies is available for the D6N, allowing customers to choose features scaled to job-site needs and budgets. Cat Connect GRADE technologies, for example, combine digital design data, in-cab guidance, and automatic blade control, resulting in enhanced grade accuracy, reduced rework, and lower costswhether the application is bulk earthmoving or finish grading. of technologies are available on the D6N, either as standard equipment (S) or optional (O) features: Cat Slope Indicate (S) displays machine cross-slope and main-fall (fore/aft orientation) on the primary monitor, helping operators work confidently on slopes. Cat Stable Blade (S) complements the operators blade-control input for attaining finish grades quicker with less effort. Cat Grade Control Slope Assist (S) helps operators more easily achieve the required main-fall and slope orientation of the blade by automatically maintaining pre-established blade angles for the grade. The system saves time, increases finish quality, and reduces operator input. Cat Grade Control 3D (O), available on the D6N in late 2015, is an integrated grade-control system that enables operators to improve grading efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in both production dozing and fine-grading applications. The integrated design positions antennas on the cab roof, eliminating conventional blade-mounted masts and related cables. Slope Assist and the Cat AutoCarry system are included in the

package to further boost productivity. Cat AccuGrade (O) is a dealer-installed aftermarket grade-control system that provides increased grading versatility and the ability to scale capacity to changing needs, providing a choice of lasers for 2D flat-plane and slope work, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) control for complex 3D cuts and contours, and/or systems using a Universal Total Station (UTS) for fine and finish grading.Cat AccuGrade Ready Option (ARO) (O) is available for easily installing or upgrading to Cat AccuGrade 2D and 3D grade-control systems.Cat Connect LINK technologies, in addition, wirelessly connect users to their equipment, providing valuable insight into machine or fleet performance. Down-to-earth approachNew Caterpillar materials handler features a step-in cab that lowers to ground level for enhanced safety and convenience. Diggers and Dozers Reports

The new Cat MH3037 is the first in a series of the new wheeled material handler line that Caterpillar is introducing in the greater than 25 tonne size class. The new material handlers are purpose-built from the ground up to work productively and durably in industrial, scrap recycling, millyard and waterway applications, while affording maximum protection and convenience for the operator. The patented Cat ground-level-entry/exit design features a step-in cab that lowers to the front or the side of the machine to enhance convenience and safety for operators and service personnel. The MH3037 has an operating weight of 39.5 tonnes and is powered by a Cat C7.1 ACERT engine that meets US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV emission standards. The engine features an electronically controlled, mechanically actuated, unit-injector fuel system that uses

multiple-injection fuel delivery for optimum power and economy in all operating situations. The MH3037 configuration is rated at 168 kW. High-strength structural steel and advanced welding techniques ensure structural integrity. A powerful hydraulic system provides rapid response with efficiency, and new serviceability features simplify maintenance. These design elements combine to provide low-cost operation and maximum value for MH3037 owners.Major structures use continuous welds that incorporate extensive chamfering and bevelling to reduce stress concentration. Booms and sticks are constructed from single-piece top and side plates to eliminate the need for seams and internal baffles. The upper frame is designed specifically to dissipate loads transferred through the front linkage and counterweight, and the lower frame has a unique tapered design for evenly distributing loads and reducing stress. Oversized pins and bushings strengthen pivot points. In addition, extensive finite element analysis and strain-gauge testing throughout the design process help ensure long term durability. Along with an 8.8 metres boom, the MH3037 can be equipped with a short 5.8 metres version or a longer 7.2 metres front configuration to best fit the application. The MH3037 uses a closed-centre, one-pump, load-

sensing implement hydraulic system with electro-hydraulic pilot control. The hydraulic pump generates only as much oil flow and pressure as required for the application, yielding powerful, rapid response and fuel-saving efficiency. To further enhance overall hydraulic power and efficiency, the machine regenerates boom-down oil flow, reducing the volume of oil the pump must produce. Reflecting the precise hydraulic design, the MH3037 divides hydraulic functions between the upper and lower main control valves, with the upper valve managing the boom, stick, work tools, cab riser and cooling circuits, and the lower valve controlling travel, steering and outriggers. This design provides optimal flow management that allows multiple, simultaneous machine functions without compromising performance. An independent, closed-loop, hydraulic swing system maintains swing priority at all times. The hydraulic oil cooler, engine air-to-air aftercooler (ATAAC), and engine radiator are all mounted side-by-side to reduce clogging caused by airborne debris and to provide better access for cleaning when necessary. The auto-reversing fan used in the hydraulic cooling system ensures that optimum temperatures between 54 and 60C are maintained, protecting oil quality, extending component life and promoting optimum machine performance.

The powertrain of the MH3037 incorporates limited-slip differentials on both the front and rear axles to provide true all-wheel-drive performance. A variable displacement hydraulic motor, coupled with a two-speed transmission, provides high- and low-speed travel and creeper-speed capability. An oscillating rear axle with an oscillation lock provides the capability to work on-rubber in rough, uneven terrain, maintaining

stability without stabilisers deployed. The hydraulic cab-riser system allows cab height to be adjusted up to an eye level of 5.5 metres. Raise time from ground level to maximum height is approximately 8 seconds; lowering time from maximum height to ground level is 10 seconds. Adjustable sensors control the height of the cab

Terex Comes CleanWith new dumpers of its own and a badge engineering agreement with JCB that will see its dumpers sporting an unfamiliar yellow livery, the news is coming thick and fast from the Terex Construction facility in Coventry. Diggers and Dozers paid the company a visit.

By the time most of us reach the ripe old age of 55, we will have started to slow down; maybe got ourselves a hobby that requires little or no real effort; swapped nights out for nights in with a cup of tea and a nice biscuit. But as Terex Constructions facility in Coventry turns 55, it shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, rather than acting its age or suffering a mid-life crisis, the factory seems to have got its second wind.In the past few months alone, it has launched Stage IV/Tier 4 Final compliant dumpers in the six tonne class, announced a Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Final-compliant range of nine and ten-tonne site dumpers, and struck a deal that will see its dumpers pimped out in JCB livery as part of a badge engineering deal. Not a bad effort for a company with one eye on its free bus pass.Under the Bonnet

At the top end of the range are the new TA9 and TA10 models that offer users increased fuel efficiency without any exhaust after-treatment requirements thanks to the use of a 55 kW JCB EcoMAX turbo-charged diesel engine. Terex claims that the first-to-market units emit the lowest CO2 figures for comparable payloads on the market today, as well as delivering a lower cost of operation and efficient cycle times. Available to order from distributors immediately, the units deliver superior customer value; both on an initial purchase basis and total life cost of operation. The new Terex dumpers feature an innovative Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dashboard, complete with hour meter, coolant temperature gauge and fuel level readout. Early warning alerts help to prevent costly downtime and enhance operator safety. In addition, a user readout panel provides real-time machine information, while Engine Control Unit (ECU) technology manages performance data to improve reliability.Launching this first-to-market range of Stage IIIB/ Tier 4 Final-compliant nine and ten-tonne site dumpers is an exciting move for Terex Construction. Ensuring our site equipment meets the latest

international regulations in particular emissions control is essential, which is why we made the decision to move away from our current engine solution and instead look towards the 55 kW EcoMAX alternative, says Neal Nowick, general manager of Terex Constructions Coventry facility. Each new TA9 and TA10 site dumper is fitted with the enhanced engine setup delivering a compliant on-site solution capable of meeting the highest international emissions regulations.Shedding a TierFurther down the product line, that JCB EcoMAX engine puts in another appearance in the companys Stage IV/ Tier 4 Final compliant range of 6-tonne site dumpersProviding users with 400 Nm of torque, the next generation dumpers will enhance on-site user productivity while also lowering running costs and reducing fuel consumption by up to eight. Adjusting the power band delivers the performance operators need to get the job done without costly and complex exhaust after-treatment systems. In addition to faster acceleration speeds under load, the new units feature a rugged automotive style Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) dashboard complete

with hour meter, coolant temperature gauge and fuel level readout. New early warning alerts, such as water-in-fuel and air filter blockage, will help prevent costly downtime. In addition, a user readout panel will provide real-time machine information, while Engine Control Unit (ECU) technology will manage performance data to improve uptime and reliability.Price FreezeAnnouncing a new range of Stage IV/ Tier 4 Final compliant site dumpers is an exciting move for the Terex compact construction range, Nowick continues. Ensuring our site equipment meets regulations is a key priority, which is why we made the decision to look towards a completely new technological upgrade. As Terex isnt an engine manufacturer, we have the freedom to select the best solutions to meet specific product needs. This allows Terex to be flexible across our different equipment ranges, while always prioritising the highest

standards of performance, efficiency, capability and reliability. Our site dumper range has gone from strength-to-strength over the past 12 months, resulting in a number of high-profile new contracts and system upgrades. The 55 kW Stage IV/ Tier 4 Final engine solution from JCB Power Systems will enable us to further continue this drive delivering an improved end product capable of meeting the highest international emissions compliance regulations. The launch of Terexs Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Final-compliant range of nine and ten-tonne site dumpers completes the transition of the brands portfolio (TA6, TA6S, TA9, and TA10) of site dumpers to JCB as the new exclusive engine supplier. And anyone thinking that will mean an immediate price-hike can think again. Terex will maintain a price freeze on the TA9 and TA10 models throughout 2015 to deliver exceptional customer value.

A specialist Sottish contractor has taken delivery of a Hyundai excavator that combines the wide and the tall to create a one-of-a-kind machine. Diggers and Dozers braved peat bogs and bracing Scottish winds to see it in action.

Ground pressure is a weird thing. While we were shooting the film footage that accompanies this exclusive article, both our cameraman and most of his kit was slowly sinking into the peat bogs at the Whitelee Wind Farm the largest wind farm in the UK - in Galston, Scotland. Admittedly, he had typically taken full advantage of the hotel breakfast and tends to carry enough camera equipment for an entire film crew. But he was stood beside a 14 tonne excavator - being used by GTR Contracts Ltd - that seemed entirely immune to the perilously soft underfoot conditions.

Big FootThe reason is simple. This one-off Hyundai Robex 140LCH-9A excavator is carried on a set of tracks with 1,200 mm wide pads that spread the machines weight over a wider area allowing it to float on the peat bogs surface crust. According to operator Gareth McCall, this allows the machine to paraphrase Captain James T. Kirk to boldly go where no machine has gone before. A standard machine just couldnt work here. It

If this machine got bogged down, it would need to be winched out. And, as were in such a remote location, that could take a long time.Above the undercarriage is another nod to the terrain in which the machine is operating. and, more importantly, to lift the body of the machine above tree stump hazards. A set of optional bumpers have been fitted by local Hyundai dealer Taylor & Braithwaite which also supplied a formidable cab guarding package to protect the operator from tree stumps and branches thrown up by the operations. The machine is currently equipped with a V-shaped bucket to facilitate the digging of the V-shaped drainage channels used to remove water from the site ahead of tree re-planting. These drainage ditches are dug every 30 metres and it is not unusual for a full hectare to be fully covered with drainage channels in a single 12-hour working shift. Completing the unique equipment package is a full set of LED working lights that allow the machine to operate long after the winter sun has dropped below the Scottish horizon.

Nice Place to BeGareth McCall reports that he tends to operate the machine in Eco mode. The digging is not very hard here so we dont generally need full power, he says. Also, by operating in economy mode, we can get two full 12-hour shifts on a single tank.It is clear that Gareth also appreciates the in-cab comforts afforded by his Hyundai ride. I have air conditioning which is terrific when its warm and dusty, he continues. But in the colder months, I also have an excellent heater and a heated seat. I can do a 12-hour shift behind the levers with no problem at all. The machine is quiet, warm and comfortable. The cab is just a nice place to be.

As sure as death and taxes, there is one great certainty in life; that each new incarnation of an excavator model will be more complex than the last. Through a need to satisfy legislative demands for cleaner and greener running or an ivory tower approach to design far removed from the muck and bullets reality of a construction site, there is nothing like some new electronics to justify a hike in price. And yet, there are times when enough actually is enough; where less is more; where the operator has everything he (or she) needs but no more.

Fond MemoriesNick Wooton has around 15 years of excavator operating under his belt. In his time, he has operated all the key brands and admits that he is a Hitachi fan. But he has fond memories of a Kobelco machine that he operated about 12 years ago. And when he was given the opportunity to go turquoise again in only the second Kobelco SK350LC to hit UK shores, he leapt at the chance. And he wasnt disappointed.I really liked the old Kobelco machine. It was comfortable and smooth to operate, he recalls. I was delighted when I was told that Id be getting a gig on one of the latest machines. That machine a Dash 9 model is currently at work at the Sky Park development in Exeter; a huge business park that will combine office, industrial and distribution space with hotel and local amenities. Over the next 20 years, this 210 million development is predicted to create up to 6,500 new jobs with a significant positive impact on the local economy as part of the wider Exeter and East Devon New Growth Point initiative. As a nod to the environmental demands of today, the development will be fuelled by a biomass and gas combined heat and power plant and will ultimately sit in a landscaped environment

    of over 40 hectares.

Operator FocusAlthough he clearly appreciates the heated, air suspension seat, rear view camera and air conditioned cab, Nick Wooton is an operator of the old school. It is possible to have too much information on the display, too many mirrors, too many buttons and dials, he insists. The Kobelco has just enough of everything. The display is clear and shows me the operating data that I need. The mirrors are well placed and, together with the rear camera, provide excellent all round visibility, particularly to the bucket and tracks. Although there is a lot of technology, it doesnt get in the way. It just lets the operator focus on the job in hand.According to Wooton, manufacturers clamour to reinvent machines every two or three years has a tendency to overlook some very simple design issues. As an operator, I am constantly getting in and out of the machine. So little things like the location of the steps and grab handles are very important to me, he says. These are excellent on the Kobelco machine. I also like the fact that the machine comes with boxing ring guards as standard, not a retro-fit or afterthought. It is clear that Kobelco has thought about operator comfort and safety.Nick Wooton is clearly a fan of the Kobelco SK350LC-9. Indeed, he even confesses to liking the machines colour scheme: better than all that yellow, he says. The ultimate test, however, is whether he would switch his Kobelco ride for something slightly less colourful. I love the Kobelco. I genuinely look forward to getting on it each morning, he concludes. I really dont want to give it back.

Necessity, it is said, is the mother of invention. And nowhere is that more true in the field of construction equipment design. When the industry needed an excavator that could also load, up popped a certain Mr Bamford and the backhoe loader was born. When the industry needed to place bricks and blocks at height, another genius cooked up the telescopic handler. And when the time came to rid the skyline of tower blocks, yet another boffin invented the high reach demolition excavator. If there is one thing that the construction equipment industry is particularly good at, it is problem solving. So when quarry operators bemoaned the high cost of wear experienced when moving tracked excavators over long distances from one face to another, you just knew that someone somewhere would come up with a solution. Enter stage left the Finnish-built Sleipner system, sold in the UK by Caterpillar dealer Finning.

Odins HorseSave for a slight mis-spelling, the Sleipner system is named after Sleipnir, the mythical eight-legged horse ridden to the Underworld by Norse god Odin. Indeed, the companys logo features the same mythical beast. Sleipnir the horse was unquestionably a pretty cool mode of transport, the Sleipner system is no slouch when it comes to getting about the place either.

The system was conceived to reduce wear, tear and maintenance costs on large track-mounted excavators working in mines and quarries. As these extractive facilities have grown ever larger, excavators were required to travel many hundreds of metres from one bench to another. The impact upon the undercarriage was nothing short of devastating. While tracks, idlers and rollers are built to last, they are built primarily to withstand short periods of activity, tracking just a few metres at a time. They certainly were not conceived to travel hundreds and even thousands of metres between work areas.Stir into the mix that many of these machines were working in unforgiving hard rock quarries or china clay pits where the mud is a thinly disguised grinding paste with the ability to eat steel for breakfast, and quarry operators were staring down the barrel at a hefty maintenance and repair bill each time a large excavator was moved any distance.

Sleipner SolutionThe solution is as simple as it is ingenious. The Sleipner system allows the excavator to drive onto the dollies, (idler first) releasing the automatic braking system. The excavator then turns around and lowers its boom into the back of a tipper, using the bucket as an anchor, and effectively turning the excavator into

a wheel-mounted trailer that can be towed around the site at around 10 times the travel speed of the excavator under its own power. Once on station, the excavator operator simply raises the boom releasing it from the tipper, and drives off the Sleipner wheels. The system is built to accommodate 30, 50, 70, 90, 100 and 120 tonne machines on a four-wheel system, and 190, 250, 310 and 400 tonne machines on the original eight-wheel version from which the company derives its name.At Imerys china clay operations in mid-Cornwall, near St Austell, the company has acquired two Sleipner systems as part of a package that heralded the arrival of three Cat 390D hydraulic excavators. This lease package was supplied by the Finning Managed Solutions (FMS) division of Cat dealer Finning.

Increased EfficiencyChina clay has been mined at the site for over 250 years. Today, annual output is around one million tonnes, with the Cornish china clays going into the worldwide market in paper fillers, ceramics, both sanitaryware and tableware and specialities, including paints, rubber, plastics and pharmaceuticals. As Imerys Mining Production Manager Edward Buscombe explains, part of the skill in operating a china clay pit is in the mixing of the product to achieve precisely the grade required by the customer. China clay or kaolinised granite comes in many forms and many grades. A key part of our job is to

mix those grades to deliver a consistent product that matches the customers specific needs, he says. In the past we would be tracking our large excavators significant distances at least once per day, and on occasions two or three times in order to ensure the correct quality feed for production or related to availability of blasted material to be extracted. The tracking element represented significant proportion of total machine hours across difficult terrain, creating high undercarriage costs and also putting additional strain on the excavator frame. So, we were accepting high maintenance costs and consuming production time. The Sleipner system provides a way of controlling undercarriage costs as part of the Finning maintenance contract and allows us to increase production time and hence tonnes per shift and tonnes per litre of fuel. This is why we chose to switch to the excavators and Sleipner system combination.Buscombe reports that he originally saw the Sleipner system at work in the Hope Quarry in Derbyshire and was immediately impressed. The team at Hope Quarry were very welcoming and gave us a great insight into the potential cost benefits of using the Sleipner system, he concludes. Although it is still early days for us, we can already see benefits in reduced wear on ground engaging components, reduced haul times, fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

This Woman's WorkHawk Group hosts a construction taster day to encourage more women to consider plant operation as a viable career choice. Diggers and Dozers reports.

There are very few women working in construction, and even fewer working behind the levers on plant and equipment. But while feminists rail against a perceived glass ceiling and trade bodies host meetings, working parties and committees to address the lack of female representation, plant hirer Hawk Group has put its money where its mouth is and hosted its first Women in Construction Taster Day at the companys training and demonstration facility in Sandford, Shropshire.

Give the Girls a ChanceWith only around 10 percent of the construction industry made up of women and a well-documented skills shortage in the sector, the taster day is part of Hawk Groups Womens Work campaign, designed to give women a chance to experience the industry first-hand and find out more about a career in construction.Hawk Group, one of the UKs leading providers of heavy machinery hire, hope that the Womens Work campaign and taster day will inspire women looking for an exciting and rewarding career. The construction industry and plant rental industry has a real shortage of operators and the taster day is all about creating an opportunity for women to consider this as a career path, says Hawk Group Chairman, Mike Hawkins. What we want to achieve from today is that some those attending take us up on the job opportunities which we have available. But perhaps more importantly is that through initiatives such as this we can encourage more women to enter the construction sector.

All Walks of LifeOver twenty women including nurses, police officers and farmers attended the day to take the opportunity to get hands on with excavators, haulers, tractors and telehandlers under the tutelage of Hawks

expert operators and trainers. The taster day also included a careers room to find out more about the careers options, apprenticeships and training courses available.Shirley Hooper was one of those attending the event and gave her feedback on the day, Its been great. Driving the dumptruck was probably the highlight for me and I found it surprisingly easy to operate. Ill

definitely be coming on the next taster day; I might even have a job with Hawk by then.Cally Waite, another attendee said the day was the platform she needed to take her first step into a new profession, Following today I am going to leave my details and hopefully join the Hawk apprenticeship scheme.

One of Scotlands biggest plant hire firms, Blackwood Plant Hire, invested in 38 new Cat excavators in 2014. The machines, supplied by Finning, were delivered in the final quarter due to sustained industry growth throughout the year. Supplying key contractors such as Land Engineering Ltd, Raynesway, Carillion Civil Engineering, Scottish Water and Network Rail, the Kilmarnock based business is looking forward to continuing the upward curve in 2015. Blackwood has now expanded operations into England, with a large, loyal, and diverse customer base throughout the north of the UK. This diversity was shown in the models of excavators purchased from Finning, ranging from mini excavators for small construction projects, to large excavators ideal for big scale aggregate contracts (16 Cat 308Es, 7 Cat 312Es, 13 Cat 320ELs and 2 Cat 329ELs). Blackwood also made use of Finnings Used

Equipment Solutions, acquiring two used Cat 312ELs. Customer requests for Caterpillar machinery, along with growth in demand within the industry were the main instigators for us to make this large scale investment from Finning. The machines are great value for money due to their reliability, fuel efficiency and functional specifications our contractors hold in such high regard, says Blackwood sales director Paul McCormack. The excellent service support from Finning was also a key factor in our decision. With the FinCore service agreement means that our machines will be inspected by in the field engineers every three months. We know the Cat excavators will be kept in optimum working condition, which gives us confidence that our customers will be satisfied with the machines performance. 2014 was a very positive year for us and our expectation is for 2015 to follow suit.

Hammers to the Power of 10Ten new Cat E-Series hammers - designed for use with mini excavators, skid-steer loaders and backhoe loaders - are available in both silenced and side-plate versions. Four sizes - H35, H45, H55 and H65 - are offered in two mounting configurations for installation on both Caterpillar and competitive carriers.

Silenced hammers, identified with s in the model designation, use a fully enclosed housing to suppress noise, a valuable feature in sensitive work environments and in small-machine applications in which the hammer is in close proximity to the operator. Non-silenced, side plate models are available for all four sizes.

Flat-top models allow versatility for installation on Caterpillar and equipment made by other manufacturers. Pin-on models are available for the H55E and H65E in applications that require a dedicated, hammer-equipped Cat machine.Several features assure convenient installation, comfortable operation and long hammer life. These hammers are designed and engineered to match auxiliary flows and pressures of the Cat machine. Plus, hydraulic ports are positioned for convenient installation. As soon as the hammer is plugged in, it is ready to perform.Suspension system on the silenced models include buffers at the top and bottom to absorb reflective forces and isolate them from the machine. A

suspension jack helps to dampen vibration and sound. The result is quiet, reliable operation and reduced operator fatigue. To protect the hammer from internal stress, an automatic shut-off can be activated. This instantly stops the piston when the hammer breaks through material which in turn protects the hammer from blank-firing.These new E-Series hammers include 47 percent fewer parts than did their D-Series predecessors. This allows for quicker and easier servicing. When it comes to daily maintenance, a single grease point is conveniently located and easily accessed. Tool changes are accomplished with common hand tools.

Doosan Upgrade Gathers PaceThe new Doosan 40-50 tonne DX420LC-5, DX490LC-5 and DX530LC-5 are the companys largest Stage IV compliant crawler excavators, providing significantly improved performance compared to the previous LC-3 Stage IIIB models. The new Stage IV 40-50 tonne excavators offer the strength and productivity needed for heavy duty work such as large-scale earthmoving, moving rock, pulling down buildings, secondary breaking, loading haulers and pipeline projects found on quarrying and mining, highway, aggregate, demolition, utility and general construction projects. Featuring a distinctive new machine styling scheme, the LC-5 range improves the already high standards set by the previous LC-3 range, adding to enhanced comfort and controllability with new features to boost fuel efficiency, uptime and return on investment, with a focus on increased power, robustness and agility. The new 42 tonne DX420LC-5 is powered by the Scania DC13 diesel engine, providing 257 kW of power at 1,800 rpm. The DX490LC-5 and DX530LC-5 are both powered by the Scania DC13 diesel engine, providing 283 kW of power at 1,800 rpm. The engines meet Stage IV emission regulations without the need of a diesel particulate filter (DPF), through the use of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalyst reduction (SCR) after-treatment technologies.Renowned for their excellent fuel efficiency, reliability and long service life, Scania engines combine exceptional power output with high torque at low revolutions. The new Scania engines in the DX420LC-5 to DX530LC-5 operate at a much lower engine speed of 1,800 rpm, down from 2,000 rpm in the Stage IIIB models, leading to significant reductions in fuel consumption, which factory tests show to be an average of five percent across the three models. In addition, the move to the Scania DC13 diesel engine in the DX420LC-5 excavator has provided an increase in torque of 11 percent. To help meet Stage IV regulations, Doosan has added a mass airflow sensor and exhaust brake to the engines. The mass airflow sensor allows the electronic control unit to improve the management of airflow provided by the variable geometry

turbocharger and to optimise fuel delivery to the combustion chamber based on air intake volume and rpm. Other exclusive features of the Scania engines are the dual fuel filter and water separator systems. In the first, a full-flow paper fuel filter is used to remove large particles with a centrifugal cleaner filtering out small particles, providing operating economy and lower environmental impact. The water separator utilises a 10 micron sized primary filter connected directly to the fuel tank, and a 3 micron sized pressure-type secondary filter. The systems are equipped with a heating function as standard for better cold crank performance. The excavators have a pre-heater with glow plug installed on the engine, which is a cold-start aid device for the winter season. The pre-heater is activated automatically when the start key is in the ON position in the ignition and the coolant temperature is -10 C or lower. The system guarantees proper starting down to -20 C. The engine coolant heater is used in connection with the machines own heating system to pre-heat water-cooled engines. The engine coolant heater operates independently of the engine and is connected to the machines cooling, fuel and electrical systems. There is also a wake-up function to pre-heat the machine. The engine coolant heater helps the engine and equipment start and operate at temperatures below -20 C.As well as the fuel efficient Scania engines, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced that together lead to huge reductions in fuel consumption amounting to an average of six to 13 percent compared to the Stage IIIB machines. Among these features is the new Trip Meter Setting screen which allows operators to check fuel consumption daily (or over a desired period) directly from the control panel; the new Auto Shut-Off provides an automatic shut down for the engine after a pre-set time when the machine has been idling for a specified time (3 to 60 minutes configurable by the operator); and to save even more fuel, there is a special Doosan-developed system, Smart Power Control (SPC), to optimise the balance between the pumps output and the diesel engine.

To Russiawith Love Delivering four 91 tonne TR100 rigid haulers from Scotland to Russia for diamond giant, ALROSA, is no mean feat and thats before embarking on an epic, 8,920 km sub-zero adventure to Russias frigid Far East. With prices perennially high, miners love diamonds even more than girls do. But the little gems wouldnt be special if they were easy to find. If you consider that a one carat diamond is no bigger than the eraser on the end of a pencil and most diamonds are smaller than one carat discovering them among tonnes of material (known as kimberlite) isnt easy. In fact, ALROSA, the world-leader in diamond mining
