Next Issue February 25, 2013
During the season of Lent we will have a sermon series
on “Giving It Up and Taking It On.” Often we think
about giving up something such as chocolate during Lent.
This year we will consider attitudes to give up during
Lent (and beyond!). It is traditional during Lent to not
only give up something but also to take on something
positive, holy or service-oriented. This year we will take
on new attitudes and actions. Join us for these worship
services as we seek to grow in Christ.
Ash Wednesday, February 13, 7:30 p.m. – “Giving up
Superficiality -- Taking on Authenticity”
First Sunday in Lent, February 17, 10:30 a.m. – “Giving
up Self – Taking on Service”
Second Sunday in Lent, February 24, 10:30 a.m. –
“Giving up OUR Expectations – Taking on GOD’S Sur-
prises
Third Sunday in Lent, March 3, 10:30 a.m. – “Giving
up Prejudice – Taking on Family”
Fourth Sunday in Lent, March 10, 10:30 a.m. – “Giving
up Privilege – Taking on Humility”
Fifth Sunday in Lent, March 17, 10:30 a.m. – “Giving
up the Past – Taking on God’s Present and Future”
Passion/Palm Sunday, March 24, 10:30 a.m. – Cantata
and “Giving up Excess – Taking on Contentment”
Maundy Thursday, March 28, 7:30 p.m. – “Giving up

Presbyterian Church – “Giving up Darkness – Taking
on Light”
Easter, March 31, 10:30 a.m. – “Giving up Death –

Dear Friends:
I want to share with you some exciting news! The Session and the Congregation of Denbigh
Presbyterian Church have recently voted to:
Continue the process that may result in a “Plan of Union” with Second Presbyterian Church
Newport News
Appoint a “Plan of Union Team” consisting of Jim Wightman, Becky Skaar, Carolyn
Woodard, Dale Pennell and Rev. Deborah Dail
The Session and the Congregation of Second Presbyterian Church have also voted to continue
the process that may result in a “Plan of Union” with our congregation and have appointed a
“Plan of Union Team.”
Background:
Second Presbyterian Church representatives have shared with us that their membership and
active worship attendance have decreased. Despite their best efforts toward revitalization, they
have not seen their church grow. Rather than closing their church, they proposed that we join
together in ministry to the Denbigh community, which we have all faithfully served for many
years. If we unite the churches’ assets – people, financial resources and heart for mission – we
may be able to carry out the mission of Christ in our community and world better together than
we can separately.
The DPC and Second Church sessions appointed 4-member teams to meet together to discuss
the possibilities of uniting our ministries. These teams have met during the latter part of 2012,
along with both churches’ pastors and representatives from the Presbytery of Eastern Virginia.
Our team is Jim Wightman, Becky Skaar, Dale Pennell and Carolyn Woodard.
At their respective January 15, 2013 meetings both the DPC and Second Church sessions ap-
proved commencing the process of uniting the ministries of the two churches, beginning in
February 2013, with the purpose of having an actionable “Plan of Union” to present to both
congregations by August 1, 2013. Both Sessions have determined that a merger may be in the
best interest of both congregations.
As noted above, this information was shared at both churches’ congregational meetings on
January 20, 2013. The actions are noted above. (At the Second Presbyterian Congregational
meeting they appointed an additional team member; it is likely that the DPC will appoint
another team member so that there are five people from each church serving on the “Plan of
Union Team.”) (continued on next page)
3
Next Steps:
The “Plan of Union Team” meets on Thursday, February 7 and will likely meet at least
monthly after that. Please note that the “Plan of Union Team” consists of the same people
who have been meeting over the last months of preliminary discussions.
We have already been inviting Second Presbyterian Church members to events and will
continue to do so. We will have a joint Ash Wednesday Service at DPC and will have a
joint Easter Sunrise Service at Second PC.
We will be drawing together leaders of both churches to look at specific areas of ministry
and how we can unite our ministries.
We hope to have an actionable “Plan of Union” to present to both congregations by August
1, 2013.
Prayer Requests:
We invite your earnest prayers for this exciting process. Please pray for:
God’s will to be accomplished
Guidance for the “Plan of Union Team.”
Guidance for the Sessions and Congregations of DPC and Second PC
Openness to possibilities and change; creativity
New friendships and ministry partnerships
Patience, courage and love throughout the process
Expanded opportunities to serve the community and world in Jesus’ name
If you have questions or ideas to share, please see me or one of the “Plan of Union Team”
members.
In Christ,
Deborah
P.S. The minutes from the January 20, 2013 Congregational Meeting will be included in the
next edition of the Digest after they are approved by the Session.

Christmas Outreach Thank you to everyone who donated food, gifts and money for families in our
community at Christmastime. Thank you to Smithfield Foods for contributing
hams. Together we provided Christmas gifts, a Christmas meal and food for chil-

Thank you to our Local Missions Team for their ongoing ministry to families in
our community.

The annual garage sale is just around the corner in the Spring of 2013.
It is time to start saving your treasures. Please note that we cannot
accept items at the church at this time due to limited storage space.
It is very helpful if you can price all of the items ahead of time. We will
not be collecting clothing, shoes, etc. Those items can be donated to
local charities. All proceeds will go to support the 2013 Haiti Mission
Team.
SAVE THE DATES! Denbigh Presbyterian Church is hosting the P.O.R.T. homeless shelter the week of March27-April3, 2013. Six partner churches will be serving in this ministry that week. We have full responsibility for the shelter the evening of Easter Sunday, March 31. Please consider this as you make plans for Holy Week. Please watch for the sign-up sheets available soon and thank you in advance for all of your help with this very important ministry. For questions, please contact Gerry Ellis at 757-877-4847 or [email protected].
Please pray for our 2013 Haiti Mission Team. The team will be traveling to Haiti to serve with
Bruce and Deb Robinson from June 17 to June 27.
Thank you for supporting the fundraisers which allow us to travel and buy needed supplies for
the work we will be doing.
If you have projects at your home, team members may be available to do the projects. You may
then make a donation in the individual’s name for his/her financial support for the trip.
For more information about the Haiti Team, fundraisers and work project opportunities please
contact Sandi Murawski.
Chili-to-GO
Thank you to all who purchased Chili-to-Go. The Haiti Mission Team collected $112.00 for
this fundraiser.

The Women of Faith Bible study.
James, Jesus' own brother, started out as a skeptic. See how one
glimpse of the resurrected Savior turned an unbeliever into a disciple.
Bible scholars compare James to the prophet Amos. In other ways,
James more closely resembles the Book of Proverbs than any other New
Testament book. Topics in this study include: joy, hardship, faith, rever-
sal of fortunes for rich and poor, wisdom, gifts from above, single-
mindedness, the dangers of the tongue, humility, and prayer.
If you are new to our Women’s Bible Studies or new to Denbigh Presbyterian
Church, we hope you will join us. We laugh a lot, cry at times, lean on each other
often, fellowship, and really enjoy being in God’s Word together. Our video
leader, Beth Moore, will constantly challenge us to think differently about our
own daily walk with God and to search further into this faithful jour-
ney. Through her infectious energy and well-researched points of view, we will
discover paths that we might never have taken before. Childcare will be
available.
It’s not too late to
join us for the
Women’s Bible
Study on James.
Join us on Monday’s
from 6:30-8:30 PM
