We Never Think It Will Happen to Us, BUT…

DON’T THINK THESE NUMBERS

APPLY TO YOU? Over 50% of us

play the lottery each year, despite

the odds of winning (1 in 175.2

million). The odds of dying in a car

crash in your lifetime? 1 in 50.

• There are over 300,000 vehicle crashes in New York State each year, involving over 530,000 vehicles. [source]

• Think most crashes occur late at night or on the weekends? Wrong. Most vehicle accidents in NY occur on Fridays, between 3pm – 6pm.[source]

• Each year in New York, over 170,000 people are injured in vehicle collisions and almost 1,200 are killed.

What’s the Point in Scaring Me?!?

Fear isn’t the right approach –

but cautiousness and greater

awareness can keep you safer.

Understanding where the highest

risks are can help you as a

defensive driver.

Some Injuries Common to All CollisionsType of severity of injuries is highly influenced by: (i) Type of vehicles involved; (ii) Speed of

vehicles at time of impact; (iii) Proper use and functioning of safety equipment including

airbags, seatbelts.

The NY State Dept. of Motor Vehicles reports that 11% of vehicle collisions resulted in

moderate to severe injury. [source]

CDC reports that 15% of all Traumatic Brain Injuries are

caused by motor vehicle accidents.

Vehicle accidents are the leading cause of chronic

post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD). It is estimated

that 9% of survivors of serious accidents develop

significant PTSD. [source]

The National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration (NHTSA) reports that

over 3 million people are injured in

vehicle accidents each year.

3 million

Not all Crashes are the Same.

Depending on the angle of impact,

speed of the vehicles, position of the

occupants at time of impact, and

other considerations: DIFFERENT

TYPES OF CRASHES RESULT IN

DIFFERENT TYPES OF INJURY.

Side Impact / Broadside / T-bone Accidents

Are More Likely…

• To be caused by a driver running a stop light or stop

sign. This failure to yield means that both vehicles are

traveling at a high rate of speed at the time of impact,

resulting in high trauma injuries.

• To cause severe injury because the crash impact is in

closer proximity to the driver or passenger.

Side Impact / Broadside / T-bone Accidentshttp://www.kaplanlawyers.com/vehicle-accident-attorneys/t-bone-accidents/

• Side-impact crashes account for 27% of accident fatalities –approximately 325 accident deaths in New York annually.

• Side impact accidents are more likely to involve multiple vehicles as the impact may push the original vehicle into oncoming traffic.

• Airbags will only deploy in the first impact – leaving occupants unprotected for any additional collisions.

Rear-End Crasheshttp://www.kaplanlawyers.com/vehicle-accident-attorneys/rear-end-wrecks/

• The NHTSA reports that 25-30% of vehicle crashes

are rear-end collisions – or approx. 90,000 rear-end

collisions in New York each year.

• The National Safety Council reports that 20% of all

people involved in rear-end collisions suffer a

whiplash injury. Consider that women are at a higher risk of sustaining whiplash injuries

because of differences in neck measurement, strength and the positioning of head rests. Rear-

end accidents can be particularly dangerous for women.

• The force of the crash can often cause back injury - specifically disc herniation.

• The rearmost passengers in SUVs and minivans are at higher risk of injury or fatality.

Head-On Collisions • Head-on crashes are the most dangerous type of crash

because of the increased force sustained by drivers and passengers.

• Data from the Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) shows that most head-on collisions are caused by a driver falling asleep, inattention, intoxication or a driver travels too fast in a curve.

• While head-on crashes only account for 2% of vehicle accidents, they account for 10% of all accident fatalities.

• It is estimated that there are ~6,000 head-on collisions in New York annually.

Understanding the Dangers, Improves Awareness & Safety.

Causes of Accidents in New York State [source]

The majority of fatal accidents were attributed to unsafe

speed.

The majority of vehicle collisions resulting in a personal

injury were caused by driver attention / distraction.

This was followed by drowsy drivers and tailgating as

the leading causes of injury from car crashes.
