Different classes of Vat Dyes
The word Vat means vessels and the name vat dyes comes from the process of manufacturing of
these coloring agents which require to be put in a vat (vessel) for their preparation. The process,
called as formantation, makes use of strong reducing agent that reduces the dye to a soluble form,
which can be used commercially.
Popular for being the most ancient class of coloring agents, Vat dyes have been classified into
various forms. Below mentioned are the most common classes of these color inducing compounds
1. Indigo this is the most primitive vat dye known. During earlier times it was extractednaturally, however with time and increase in its demand commercial preparation of the dyes
was started
2. Thio-indigo it is the sulphur containing derivative of the indigo dye3. Synthetic derivatives of indigo these majorly include brom-indigo coloring agents which
are created synthetically4. Anthraquinone derivatives the major compounds falling under this class include Algol
dyes, Marione, Helindone and Indanthrene, to name a few
5. Carbazol derivatives a major derivative of this class is Hydron Blue, which finds its use invarious commercial purposes
