Difference between transactional SMS and promotional SMS

Transactional SMS

These messages are those which are necessary for the user. In Short it is termed as service messages. These messages include the information that is needed for the clients and not any promotion or marketing messages. They are merely informative messages.

Transactional SMS

For Example: 1. Messages related to account balance of the bank account holder. 2. Messages to the client regarding his invoice amount.

These messages even reach to the DND numbers with a particular Sender ID of 6 alphabetical formats. Since it reaches DND numbers it involves some documentary formalities and hence the SMS generator has to undergo certain legalities.

Examples of Transactional templates:

"Your order no %d has been shipped. You will receive this order by %s. Thanks for using our services.""Thanks for participating in our missed call campaign to save nature. Your enrollment id is %d“

Note: %d is used to substitute numbers and %s is used to substitute alpha-numeric strings.

Promotional SMS

The SMS that are sent with the objective of promoting one’s goods or services are mapped as promotional route. This category includes any sales and marketing which may or may not be preferred by the recipient. These messages will not be delivered to DND (Do Not Disturb) registered number.

Examples of promotional SMS:

Dear Travel Agents, Now Get Flat 10% Off on Flight (Basic Fare) , Same has been updated on the portal. Login now and start booking !

Dear %s, Our team wishes you a very Happy %s. We have mailed you a dining voucher at your address with 20% discount on Food and Buffet. Valid till %s. You can also show this SMS with voucher code %s to avail it.

As a thumb rule, SMSes that have offers, coupons etc can be considered as promotional content.
