With retirement on the horizon for nextyear, librarian Deborah Merrick will spendher remaining time in a new capacity,overseeing several regional libraries —from her home-base here in Merritt — andfinding her replacement for our library.

over her 27 years here, Deborah hastransformed the Merritt Library from asmall rural collection into a thriving & in-novative community hub. She has wonawards within the TNRD Library Sys-tem, and has put her creative, out-of-the-box thinking to work for us. on severalfronts, Deborah has helped to definewhat a library can be in this age, and hasmade our library one of the best.

VSA & City of Merrittdefendants in lawsuits

The Ministry of Transportation, VSAHighway Maintenance Ltd., the City ofMerritt and a company only identified asABC company have all been named as de-fendants in individual lawsuits broughtforward by several dozen passengers in-jured when their tour bus flipped into aditch on the Coq in August 2014.

The lawsuits allege that “the collisionoccurred when the driver of the bus lostcontrol of the vehicle due to the slipperyroad conditions on the highway.

Further or in the alternative, the colli-sion occurred when the driver of the buslost control of the bus  due  to inade-quately marked pavement and/orpoorly designed road.” according to theVancouver Sun article.

Particulars of the alleged negligenceinclude “a failure to properly design,construct, mark, inspect or maintain thehighway and a failure to conduct or rea-sonably conduct regular inspections ofthe highway.”

At the time, word was (from Merrit-tonians overhearing victims’ conversa-tions while at the Kelowna hospital, forexample) that the bus driver fell asleepat the wheel. And that was before Trans-portation Minister Todd Stone told aradio station that “mechanical failurehad been eliminated as a factor followingan inspection of the bus, and that driverfatigue potentially led to the crash.”

The allegations have not been testedin court, and City of Merritt CAo ShawnBoven has stated: “the crashed occurreda good half hour outside of the city, sothe city cannot be held responsible.”
