7 Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

It is both a pleasure and a privilege to present to you the

annual report for the 2018/2019 season.

Well done everyone for another very successful season

and again NO lives lost between the flags.

The only reason we are all here is to provide the safest

swimming environment available, between the red and

yellow flags, to watch over the swimmers and encourage

them to a safer spot if needed and to rescue them when

in trouble. The Lifesavers motto “Vigilance and

Service”. Our volunteers on patrols have once again done

an excellent job in providing this service and for that I

thank you. It is encouraging to see the younger members

stepping up, gaining awards and taking on responsible

patrol positions, allowing the older members to step back.

Sam Smith, the Club Captain and his helpers (The Surf Life

Saving Committee) has been outstanding in providing

the training, operational equipment and guidance to

the beach patrols.

Lorelle Warner our Grants and Sponsors officer, has

excelled this year, securing many grants of varying

amounts from all different organisations to provide

rescue and patrol equipment, defibrillators, radios

and rescue boards to name a few. She also secured a

Government Grant for the materials to build a new

patrol trailer which is coming close to completion. The

build is being sponsored and built by one of our very

own Patrol Captains, Shane Pukallus and his Engineering

Company.

Our sponsors and supporters play the major role in

providing funds directly and goods to assist us in fund

raising, to purchase equipment and assist with the cost

of running a major surf lifesaving club. We appreciate

what you do, for without you, the club would be nothing

like it is now.

The Supporters Club and their dedicated Committee

have again provided the major part of financial assistance

needed and the Surf Club thanks you. A very special thanks

to the Goldberg Foundation for once again supporting

us this season and assisting with the purchase of a new

Toyota 4WD following on from the tractor last season.

Surf Sports under the guidance of Gary Taylor and his

band of merry folk has seen all areas improve immensely.

With three coaches and a head coach we have seen a

great improvement in all disciplines from junior activities,

swimming, boards, beach and great boat crews. Well

done to you all.

It is great to see members put their hand up for a committee

position and help guide and assist the club throughout

the season and into the future. The Sub Committees are

the real heart of the club and make it function.

A special thank you to the Administration Staff for a job

well done and for putting up with the inconvenience of

the office renovations.

Finally, I would like to thank my fellow board members

for their patience and support throughout the year. The

job has certainly changed in many ways since I was last

in this position. However, all club members working

together as a team to benefit the club is one thing that

hasn’t changed.

Have a great winter and off season break and hope to see

you all back on the beach in September 2019.

Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

I am pleased to present my first report as Treasurer of

this wonderful Surf Club. The financial statements as

prepared by Stephen Shirley of SPS Audit forms part of

this Annual Report.

The end of our financial year saw us 75% of the way

through a Reception and Office Renovation. The

$381,251 build is being financed by a $300,000 draw

down on our Bendigo Bank loan and funds from the

Supporter’s Club. At 30 April, the loan has been drawn,

however $260,000 of it is still in our bank account to pay

for the build. I wish to thank Rob Campbell and Natalie

Bell for overseeing this build over the past 3 months.

In August 2018, we were able to trade-in the old ute

on a new Toyota Ute compliments of the Goldberg

Foundation. The Goldberg Foundation has been a great

supporter of this Club for many years and we greatly

appreciate their interest and commitment to our Club.

The final major capital purchase in September 2018

was new solar panels on our roof. These were funded

by a loan draw down and at 30 April this loan was more

than halved.

The budget was carefully monitored throughout the

year. The Operating Profit before Depreciation and

Other Income was a loss of $211,110. The budgeted

figure was a loss of $221,221. The Club’s committees

were given their own budget to monitor this year. I

wish to thank Gary Taylor (Surf Sports), Sam Smith

(Lifesaving) and Michael Doherty (JAC) for their efforts

in achieving this result.

The Supporters Club provided over $300,000 to the

Club this year. $100,000 was directed to the build and

the balance propped up our loss. Without this funding

our Club would not survive in its current format. I thank

the Supporters committee for their great support.

A big thank you to Lorelle Warner for her efforts in

securing over $41,000 in grants this year. These funds

purchased a patrol arena, a new SSV, some of the solar

panels, a storage cupboard in the canteen, computers

and safety equipment.

Tash Van Veen and Kerry Gillett looked after our day-to-

day finances this year. A big thank you, ladies.

Finally, I would like to thank Ian Irwin for his work on the

raffles every Friday night and his ongoing support of

the Markets every Sunday. Thank you to the members of

the Apparel, Finance and Fundraising committees and

all the canteen workers for their support throughout

the season.

9 Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

The 2018/2019 season has seen a decline in numbers. Our numbers have stayed steady in the last 2 years in the Cadets and Active (15-18 yrs), with our Youth Development Officers playing a huge part in keeping our youth involved in many activities throughout the Season.

A reminder during the off season to keep an eye on your expiry date of your Blue Card, this does need to be current for the upcoming season, also any Patrolling member that turns 18, you will need to apply for a Blue Card.

We spent 11221.84 hours patrolling our beach, thank you for all of you that volunteered your time.

Congratulations to Andrew Strachan and Ian Irwin who completed over 100 hours this season (also I managed to get there as well).

Enjoy the off season and we look forward to seeing you all back for 2019/20.

Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

I just want to start by saying thank you to our lifesaving operations committee; Stacey, Gavin, John, Ross, Mal, Hamish, Pip, Kerrie and Geoff. While it was a first season for some of us in our new roles we have made some changes that will benefit the members as a whole in the coming seasons. New Arena, ATV, committee processes in supporting members better and many discussions on how to improve communication between committee and members.

We as a club have had a busy season. It is a sign of the times that as population and suburbs grow in and around the Sunshine Coast our mission to keep Wurtulla through to Shelly Beach safe is an ever increasing and ongoing commitment. With that I wish to thank our dedicated 288 active members. Without your continual volunteering and support we may have had more major incidents.

Thank you to our trainers and assessors, you are our quiet achievers, bolstering our patrols with 5 IRB courses and new SRC and BM members. Dicky Beach was also able to send members on Sunshine Coast initiated programs such as PULSE (18+) a program that focuses on bringing together seasoned lifesavers young to old, extending their patrolling experience in situational awareness & emergency response situations involving multiple services. Also, the Lifesaving Program (15-21 years) a program piloted first in Tasmania purely based on scenario learning and assessing across multiple awards in one week.

I would like to thank the administration team Kerry, Robyn and even Jo as Secretary for keeping my unorganised self as organised as possible. Your patience and professionalism is appreciated and helped me keep on track.

Last but not least I would like to thank our 15 Patrol Captains. These members not only are volunteers but leaders in our community. They have direct contact with our new and ongoing members and influence, empower and motivate their teams throughout the season.

Patrolling wise though we’ve had struggles through non attendances and lack of substitutes throughout the season which shows members are time poor and we may need to take a different approach in regards to patrol requirements or structure/processes in acquiring substitutes ect. This was an ongoing stress for Patrol Captains and patrols alike.

My report doesn’t follow the norm I guess, but it is worth noting in a surf club, while this season I was club captain there are many members (300 give or take) that contribute to the successful running of the club. Without these many volunteers continually giving their time, the season might have turned out very differently.

All the best to everyone this off season, see you on the beach!

Sam

15 Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

The training section has had another big year, with large numbers of skills maintenance and new awards being completed by our members and dedicated band of trainers and assessors.

We kicked the training season off in the middle of winter with the Kawana State College bronze course which finished in September prior to the season commencing. Lindsay Smith ran the course with the assistance of trainers Peter Graham and Gavin Mahon and assessors Ross Gibb and Mal Coyle. Gavin completed his first course as a facilitator where he both trained and assessed. Six students completed the course where the students performed much of the theory at the school with water activities at Dicky Beach.

The annual Live in Camp came next, being held during the September school holidays with a total participants of 41 (21 bronze and 19 SRC). We incorporated a Radio Operators certificate for the SRCs and also the First Aid certificate for the bronze squad. Many thanks go to the trainers, assessors, youth development, chief caterer, parents, cadets and other members of the club for making the camp such a success.

In March 2019 we held a live in camp for 17 students of the Pine Rivers State High School. Coordinated by Ian Roberts with help from Mal Coyle. The camp was again a huge success, particularly considering the club being in the middle of our refurbishment.

The club ran two general bronze courses throughout the season, October 2018 and February 2019, totaling 5 bronze/SRC courses for the season for a total of 63 bronze and 26 SRCs. The Supporters Club once again provided lunches to our courses.

Our members gained a total of 112 Emergency Care awards through the Australian Lifesaving Academy Queensland. Once again we combined the bronze award with a first aid certificate (HLTAID003) on our live in camp and October and February courses. Thanks to Grant Hutson who ran these courses.

It was good to see the club running a number of IRB courses this season with 21 new crewies and 14 new drivers. Thanks to our IRB team of Peter Aitken, Ross Hutton, Anna Jones, Ian Grant and John Palmer.

137 members who held the ATV award were automatically upgraded to the new SSV award. Only members who were active during this season were upgraded. Overall our members gained a total of 467 awards this season.

Our assessors are also undergoing some additional training, attending a 3 day Design and develop assessment tools (TAEASS502) course. This award is a mandatory requirement for our assessors to continue to assess after 1 July. I thank all of our assessors who have taken the time to complete this course to ensure the club can keep offering the courses we do.

At the beginning of the season we began the annual skills maintenance program where we saw a total of 692 individual awards maintained. This year we ran two formal skills maintenance days and a number of smaller sessions throughout December. It is our preference that our members attend the formal skills maintenance days in October and November as this does take a lot of the burden off of our trainers and assessors who do a remarkable job of not only attending their own skills maintenance but backing up to help all members through the process.

Thanks to our junior activities trainers and also to our Junior Activities Accreditation Officers (JAAO) for the effort they have put into Junior Activities. The JAAO’s assessed 550 preliminary evaluations at the beginning of the Nipper season and our nippers gained 177 new awards.

Peter Aitken held the branch position of IRB Training and Assessor Coordinator (TACO). Grant Hutson held the position of Emergency Care trainer, incorporating first aid into our bronze medallion courses as well as training throughout the branch.

The success of the club’s training section could not have been achieved without the dedication and expertise of our trainers and assessors. Thanks so much to the team: Ross Gibb, Mal Coyle, Grant Hutson, Peter Aitken, Ross Hutton, Teresa Hutton, Ian Grant, Anna Jones, John Palmer, Dave Stanley, Gavin Mahon, Lindsay Smith, Joanne Aitken, Bryon Box, Ian Roberts and Cardiah Stanley.

I would like to congratulate all of the award recipients for the year and encourage our members to continue to upgrade their skills and improve the quality of our patrols.

17 Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

Season 2018/19 was another full year for all of us involved in Surf Sports. The one thing that I did notice this year over past seasons was our coaching ranks.

We now have some of the most experienced and dedicated coaches involved within our club. This has not just happened over night as it has been a work in progress from early last year and is still ongoing.

Many people have been involved in setting our club up to be a very professional Surf Sports club. I thank all our coaches for the season past and look forward to rolling along into 2020.

I would also like to thank the members of our Sports Committee. We have all worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep things on the go for all of our competitors.

Our club officials have been some of the best in the state with many carnivals over run with DB officials. Peter Thomas has looked after all our officials this year and they all need to be very proud for all the work they have done over the season.

For a small club we have had success across many disciplines. On top of some great results the highlight for me is the participation rate from our small band of athletes/competitors.

Many of our club sporting members are giving up their time to be involved in a variety of sporting disciplines on offer. We have to remember that our sporting members are not only competing and representing our club in the variety of disciplines, but they are also training numerous times per week and also patrolling the beach. I admire them for this and thank them for remaining fit and active so ultimately, they can confidentally perform any form of duty that is required of them whilst on patrol looking after the public.

We have way too many great results to mention so once again I thank everyone involved in our surf sports program, not forgetting the parents and partners of all involved.

Everyone involved in IRB; Boat; March Past; Swimming; Board Paddle; Surfing; Beach; Surf Rescue; Pool Rescue; Ski competitions from our nippers right through to our master members should be proud to wear the Dicky Beach Greens and here is hoping we are all looking forward to 2020.

Thankyou

The club’s Accredited Officials list has increased this current season, particularly with the parents within Junior Activities. As I was the Referee for the Queensland State Youth Championships held at Burleigh Heads in March, I was more than pleased with the number of Dicky Beach Officials who made themselves available. Dicky Beach was also well represented at local and Branch Championships. Thank you to all who made themselves available to officiate at both Senior and Junior Carnivals either on the Beach or in IRBs.

Dicky Beach Officials were well represented at this year’s State Championships:

Peter Thomas – Referee of State Youth Championships John Palmer – Referee of State Surf Rescue Championships

Alan Seeney – Sectional Referee of both Senior and Youth Marchpast Championships Graham Johnson – Sectional Referee Beach Sprints Youth Championships

Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

Dicky Beach surfboat crews enjoyed a history-making season, breaking all club records for achievement.

The section grew from two crews the previous season to five, and became one of the strongest in the state.

Our five 2018/19 crews - the Tooshies, Gerbils, Dandelions, Prime Beef and Flashbacks - all performed admirably and did the club proud both in and out of the water. Officials at the State Championships commented we were the happiest and most supportive of each other club in Queensland.

The Tooshies built on their brilliant previous year to become the highest performing crew in the club’s history. They claimed two world gold medals in Adelaide in November, their wins in the u19 and u23 women’s finals a first for the sport. By winning their third consecutive state gold, the Tooshies surpassed a junior club record of two gold and a bronze set in the early 1980s.

They also powered home to take silver at the National Championships to cap an amazing season. They took a bronze in the reserve women’s state event and also combined with the Gerbils and Flashbacks Masters to claim another state bronze in the prestigious surfboat relay, seen as the ultimate showcase of a club’s rowing depth.

It was the first time our club had entered this event, which requires an u19 crew, women’s crew and open men’s crew. Other clubs fielded mainly open women and men plus u19s, so the opposition was formidable. It was a wonderful team effort.

The under 19 women’s state final was a thriller with our emerging younger crew, the Dandelions, stamping themselves as a crew to watch with an impressive fourth, just outside a medal. The Gerbils did everything right but had to be content with a bronze from a tricky alley.

The Flashbacks won the 160 masters division and notched their third carnival victory for the season, while the Prime Beef crew produced their best rowing of the season to make the state final in the 180 division. They are only in their first year and have worked hard to improve their skills. The 180 division contains rowers who have been in the sport for 30 years so is very competitive indeed.

In summary results were:

Tooshies: World Titles Gold in u19 and u23 women’s, Australian Silver, State Gold in u19 women, Bronze reserve women, Bronze surfboat relay, ASRL Open Bronze, 1st Qld Cup premiership, 1st Navy Series premiership, ASRL Qld State Team, winning U19 women’s final. Ranked no. 1 in Australia for 2nd year in a row.

Gerbils: State Bronze u19 men, State Bronze surfboat relay, ASRL Open finalists, 1st Qld Cup Series premiership.

Flashbacks: State Gold 160 masters, State Bronze in surfboat relay, Australian 160s finalists, ASRL Open finalists, 2nd Qld Cup premiership.

Dandelions: State finalists, ASRL Open finalists, 2nd Qld Cup premiership.

Prime Beef: 1st in the Qld cup Premiership and state 180s finalists.

Special thanks to our coaches and sweeps Rob Flood, Brett McCullagh and John Schwabe and all the parents and supporters who were there to cheer the crews on.

Also special thanks to our sponsors East Coast Frames and Trusses and Megabeam, as well as Natalie Bell and our Supporter’s Club.

Can’t wait for next season.

19 Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

2018-2019 was a great season with many great times. We started training around September 2018 with little to no turn out and as the season continued and the school year ended we had a great turn out making 15 competitors, 8 first aid teams, 3 patrol teams and 9 champion lifesaver competitors.

With an amazing result at Surf Rescue Branch titles, Dicky Beach placing 4th overall. Our under 14 boys taking Gold (Riley Usher) and Silver (Cooper Bessell) in our champion lifesaver and our U14 girls getting 4th (Samantha Hutton), 6th (Charlotte Blacker), 8th (Zara Morris), 9th (Madison Dale) and Erin taking 3rd in open champion lifesaver. Our newcomers Jack Eastwick and Rowan Cois taking 6th in both U19 and opens as well as 5th in U17 First aid Comp, and Erin Gibson and Tara Emery taking 5th in open first aid. Ella Blacker and Tara Emery took 5th in the U19 first aid comp and our U15 first aid making up the majority of their age group. A great effort from them, taking 3rd (Samantha Hutton and Grace Garland) 4th (Maddison Taylor and Aiden Nelson) 5th (Chloe Enever and Zara Morris) 6th (Maddison Dale and Anastasja Hughey) 7th (Cooper Bessell and Charlotte Blacker).

Another amazing job by our patrol comp competitors taking 4th (Charlotte Blacker, Madison Dale, Anastasja Hughey, Samantha Hutton), 6th (Oliver Barber, Chloe Enever, Aiden Nelson, Maddison Taylor) and 7th (Cooper Bessell, Grace Garland, Zara Morris and Riley Usher).

With 9 competitors qualifying for state, we came home with an amazing Gold in the U14 champion lifesaver Riley Usher and a great effort by all our teams walking away with great experiences and a few more notches in their belts. Our opens champion lifesaver Erin Gibson taking 6th overall, our U15 first aid team Samantha Hutton and Grace Garland taking 4th, our U15 patrol competition team Samantha Hutton, Anastasja Hughey, Charlotte Blacker and Maddison Dale with a 5th place and finally our U19 first aid team Ella Blacker and Tara Emery taking home an 8th place. Overall Dicky beach came 4th in the handicap point score.

A huge thank you to all that made this season possible. Our amazing parents for stepping up to the plate with all the behind the scenes and support they gave the team and coaches, and of course our amazing competitors who gave it their all and made their coaches and parents very proud.

Wow – another year gone doing what we love – it’s great to watch and see the awesomeness of all our Youth and the different pathways they take in Surf Life Saving – watching some Youth go from Board training to trying Surf Boats and IRB racing and achieving and giving it their all whilst having fun in what they apply themselves to. It is also great to see the mix of different age groups hanging out together – after all we are one big family, and want the best for everyone.

This year we’ve had a fantastic number of Youth attend the various Surf Life Saving Camps and Leadership Programs that are on offer. I congratulate you all and hope that you were able to take something positive from these.

This next Season both Sam and I will be continuing as Youth Development Officers – with a goal to increase the Youth Development attendance by forming a Youth Development

Leadership Group. We hope that you can all contribute and put your leadership skills into action. From there we plan to look at

alternative/effective fundraising to assist with all our Club provides for us. We would like to organise events that draw in the majority of our Youth, develop strategies and processes to better support transitions and all this has to INVOLVE FUN!!

Thanks Sam for a fantastic Season – you are a great Mentor and example to all our Youth, Big Hug to you. Look forward to more great times, challenges and experiences along way.

Thank you from myself to you all – for the great friendships I continue to make – and watching you all grow, and all my training buddies – I’ll look after you all – if you all look after me.

That’s all for now – See you on the Beach.

This season we were faced with multiple challenges including bad weather, on going issues with the rec centre, multiple injuries and a new group of athletes coming up into the squad who were very green and struggling to navigate the waters. But what an amazing group of resilient, hard working, dedicated kids they were and the achievements this team of young lifesavers managed to achieve was outstanding and as a coach I couldn’t be prouder!

This season we continue to benefit from the pool hire at the Currimundi Rec Centre. The pool offers the kids at Dicky Beach the opportunity to continue to develop both their fitness and their swimming skills, in a targeted environment. This program helps to ensure that we continue to be competitive in the competition arena and continue to develop the kids’ confidence both in the pool and in the ocean. As a club, we are not as strongly connected with external competitive swimming clubs as other surf lifesaving clubs on the coast, however, thanks to access to the current pool program, we are ensuring that we are still producing competent, confident and competitive kids within our own rights. I have to thank Gary Taylor and Janene Holland who have both been instrumental in the success of the pool program.

This season the improvements made within the squad far surpassed my expectations at the beginning of the year. Although it is great to achieve podium finishes within your arena, it is also just as important to celebrate the individual results and improvements made. For me this season the dedication

and hard work of every member of the Dicky Beach Iron Squad needs to acknowledged. It would have been easy for some of these kids to quit, but they turned up week after week and their hard work paid off by qualifying to represent their club at State titles. I have to thank Joel Yeo who always ensured we had adequate water safety and the parents who offered their assistance with water safety during the season, we couldn’t have facilitated the training sessions without you. I would also like to thank the Hutton family for assisting in the running of another successful camp at Harry’s Hut. This is always a fantastic team bonding activity and is now a tradition that I hope we can continue for years to come.

The best life lesson that I hope the kids who train at Dicky Beach get to take with them, is that it is not always about winning, but it is about the journey that you take in trying to achieve your goals. That in life, there will be waves that knock you off your board, or days when it is easier to stay in bed, but our team ethos of “Never Give Up” and “Who are we” will sit in the back of every kids mind, and they will take that with them, because when they get to look back and see how far they have come they will be reminded that it was all worth it.

Thank you for a great season.

Ronnie Bowtell

I would like to congratulate all of the Nippers in completing a fantastic 2018-19 Nippers season and acknowledge everyone’s contribution in making the season such a success.

The club now boasts 380 junior members and 25 cadet members (u14-15s), which is approximately 30 less than last season. This is due largely to the fact we want to ensure a quality product delivered to our Nippers. The JAC committee made a conscious decision this season to only allow U6 Nippers join us if they have a sibling within our program to reduce the burden on our volunteers.

This season Nippers participated in 18 of the scheduled 20 Nipper days, with 2 days cancelled due to sever weather and dangerous surf conditions and one other day finishing early due to a development storm with lightning concerns.

This season we are celebrating 50 years of Nippers being introduced to Surf Life Saving. To honour this celebration, our Nipper female captains Sam and Zara with Life Member Teresa Hutton, represented our club at the parliamentary annexe in Brisbane recognising the 50 years.

During the season we were fortunate to be sponsored by Breaka, providing us with weekly packs for the best boy and girl in each age group. The Breaka Packs were presented to very deserving Nippers at our Nipper Day Musters along with milk packs provided to share with their age group.

It was great to see all the Nippers participate in two very successful points days, providing usually non competing Nippers with the opportunity to race their mates. Unfortunately, the third scheduled points day was cancelled due to Cyclone Oma.

We held 4 Twilight Nipper days followed by Club BBQs throughout the season. This provided a terrific opportunity for parents to socialise, kick back with a beverage or two and enjoy the evening’s entertainment.

Unfortunately Rainbow Beach and U8-10 Branch Carnivals were cancelled due to severe weather conditions and safety concerns.

Eleven new Age Mangers were qualified this season, with a massive thanks to Jo Aitken and Michelle Doherty for providing the training and mentoring.

Joel Yeo (Water Safety Officer) has recruited numerous Nipper parents who achieved their SRC or BM this season and are now providing essential Water Safety and have also joined the Dicky Beach Patrol Roster. We have also increased our IRB Driver resilience with Dan Sanders, Mick Warner, Craig Blacker and Steve Chamberlain now qualified and providing essential Nipper Carnival IRB shift duties.

Ross Hutton has excelled in his role as Gear Steward this year. He coordinated the Nipper gear shed renovations with new board racks constructed and new cupboards installed. The gear shed has a new sign erected – Developing Lives to Save Lives. Fibreglass Mals and Nipper boards were repaired and fees introduced for season allocation. Nipper Foam Boards renewals of 42 boards has been completed, with old boards sold. Ross has procured Foam Mals for use in Water Safety, he has facilitated new sponsor marquee tops and now has a 9 Can String. A fantastic achievement throughout the year.

Apparel Officer Kerri Chamberlain has introduced new shirts for Age Managers, Coaches and Team Managers, making them easy to identify on the Beach on Nipper days and at Carnivals.

Fundraising Officers Janene Holland and Briony Taylor introduced the SingUpGenius app to allow parents to nominate for Nipper Raffles and other club fundraising events. The app has proven to be useful in scheduling and reminders of our activities.

Once again, I would like to sincerely thank all JAC members, Volunteers, Parents and Nippers for their participation in this year’s Nipper Season and look forward to a bigger and better 2019-20 season.

I wish to thank my committee members, who have assisted in providing direction and support to the Supporters Club for 2018 – 19 and our General Manager Natalie Bell and valuable employees for working with our committee and the members to ensure we remain a strongly supported profitable club.

Thanks

David MolesSupporters Club President

Dicky Beach Supporters Club has had a very prosperous year experiencing a lot of growth in our income, by developing and strengthening our organisational culture and structure.

A significant factor in the success of our Club is our investment in our employees through the introduction of our Customer Experience Programme. In March 2018 we commenced changing the direction and culture of our Club to ensure our customers were at the heart of everything we do. Our employees have been actively involved and have driven this process in which we developed our own Customer Charter.

Our Customer Charter is our commitment to our customers and will help in future proofing our Club.

Due to the achievements of our Club, in the last three years we have been able to fund over 2 million dollars in building projects to ensure the future prosperity of our Club, these projects include:

• November 2016 - $1.5 Million renovation to kitchen, bistro, deck and external building

• December 2018 - $100,000 Solar installation resulting in a 25% reduction in energy costs

• February 2019 - $400,000 Renovation to offices, reception, gaming entrance and stairway

I would like to sincerely thank all of our dedicated employees that enable our Club to achieve our goals. This year has been a very transformative year in the evolution of our employees and they have really stepped up and taken responsibility in driving the future direction of the Club.

The results of our employees are reflective in these key achievements:

• Highest Income for the Club -$5.19 Million• 2nd Best Club Sunshine Coast• 3rd Best Club – QLD – Gaming (Large 50-300 EGMS’s)• 2nd Best Supporters Surf Lifesaving Club• Top 5 Finalist Employer of the Year• Top 5 Finalist Trainee of the Year

This year was also a sad year for us losing a valuable life member and Supporters Committee member Bobbie Flynn; who through over his 50 years with our Club brought so much through his passion and commitment, he is greatly missed.

In particular I would also like to thank our volunteers Rick Blackburn, Peter Thomas and Sean who continue to do an amazing job in upgrading and maintaining our gardens and premises. We continually receive extremely positive feedback by our guests upon their arrival at our Club.

I would like to thank the Supporters Club Committee members for their efforts and valuable contribution over the year. It makes my role of General Manager very rewarding when working with such a committed team.

Thank you to our regulars who support us every day and our loyal members that enable us to achieve such great results. I am looking forward to an exciting year ahead and achieving all the results and outcomes we have planned.

Cash and Cash Equivalents

Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with banks, and other short-term highly liquid investments

with original maturities of three months or less.

Provision is made for the association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees to the end of the

reporting period. Employee provisions have been measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liability is settled.

Leasehold improvements are amortised over the shorter of either the unexpired period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of

the improvements.

The depreciable amount of all PPE is depreciated over the useful lives of the assets to the association commencing from the time

the asset is held ready for use.

Impairment of Assets

Leasehold improvements and office equipment are carried at cost less, where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.

Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE)

Employee Provisions

Provisions

Provisions are recognised when the association has a legal or constructive obligation, as a result of past events, for which it is

probable that an outflow of economic benefits will result and that outflow can be reliably measured. Provisions are measured at the

best estimate of the amounts required to settle the obligation at the end of the reporting period.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 APRIL 2019

Summary of Significant Accounting Policies

The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the

Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Queensland). The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accrual basis and are based on historical costs. They do not take into account

changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non-current assets.

Note 1

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in

the preparation of these financial statements.

Income Tax

Financial Reporting Framework

Statement of Compliance

Basis of Preparation

The financial report has been prepared in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Queensland), the basis of accounting

specified by all Australian Accounting Standards and Interpretations, and the disclosure requirements of Accounting Standards AASB 101:

Presentation of Financial Statements , AASB 108: Accounting Policies , Changes in Accounting Estimates and Errors and AASB 1054:

Australian Additional Disclosures .

Accounts Receivable and Other Debtors

Accounts receivable and other debtors include amounts due from members as well as amounts receivable from donors.

Receivables expected to be collected within 12 months of the end of the reporting period are classified as current assets. All other

receivables are classified as non-current assets.

Pursuant to Section 50-10 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, the Club is exempt from paying income tax to the Australian

Taxation Office.

Class of Fixed Asset Depreciation Rate

5%

25%

25%

At the end of each reporting period, the committee reviews the carrying amounts of its tangible assets to determine whether there is

any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, an impairment test is carried out on the asset by

comparing the recoverable amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs of disposal and value in use, to

the asset’s carrying amount. Any excess of the asset’s carrying amount over its recoverable amount is recognised in the income

and expenditure statement.

The depreciation rates used for each class of depreciable assets are:

Interest revenue is recognised using the effective interest method, which for floating rate financial assets is the rate inherent in the

instrument.

Leases

Leased assets are depreciated on a straight-line basis over the shorter of their estimated useful lives or the lease term. Lease

payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are charged as expenses in the

periods in which they are incurred.

Leases of PPE, where substantially all the risks and benefits incidental to the ownership of the asset (but not the legal ownership)

are transferred to the association, are classified as finance leases.

Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Accounts payable and other payables represent the liability outstanding at the end of the reporting period for goods and services

received by the association during the reporting period that remain unpaid. The balance is recognised as a current liability with the

amounts normally paid within 30 days of recognition of the liability.

Finance leases are capitalised by recording an asset and a liability at the lower of the amounts equal to the fair value of the leased

property or the present value of the minimum lease payments, including any guaranteed residual values. Lease payments are

allocated between the reduction of the lease liability and the lease interest expense for that period.

Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST incurred is not

recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Receivables and payables are stated inclusive of the amount of GST

receivable or payable. The net amount of GST recoverable from, or payable to, the ATO is included with other receivables or

payables in the assets and liabilities statement.

If conditions are attached to the grant that must be satisfied before the association is eligible to receive the contribution, recognition

of the grant as revenue will be deferred until those conditions are satisfied.

All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax.

Grant and donation income is recognised when the entity obtains control over the funds, which is generally at the time of receipt.

Revenue and Other Income

Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable after taking into account any trade discounts and

volume rebates allowed. For this purpose, deferred consideration is not discounted to present values when recognising revenue.

Dicky Beach SLSC Annual Report - 2018/2019

financialREPORT

Emphasis of Matter – Basis of Accounting

We draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has

been prepared to assist the association to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1981

(Queensland). As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose. Our opinion is not modified in

respect of this matter.

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report as a whole is free from material

misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor’s report that includes our opinion. Reasonable

assurance is a high level of assurance, but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with the Australian

Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error

and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the

economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.

As part of an audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain

professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also:

Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design

and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and

appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from

fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions,

misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.

Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are

appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the

association’s internal control.

Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates and

related disclosures made by the committee.

Responsibilities of the Committee for the Financial Report

The committee is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the

financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1981 (Queensland) and for such internal control as

the committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free

from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial report, the committee is responsible for assessing the association’s ability to continue as a

going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of

accounting unless the committee either intends to liquidate the association or to cease operations, or has no realistic

alternative but to do so.

Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report

Basis for Opinion

We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are

further described in the Auditor’s Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report section of our report. We are

independent of the association in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical

Standards Board’s APES 110: Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of

the financial report in Australia. We have also fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code. We

believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion.

Conclude on the appropriateness of the committee’s use of the going concern basis of accounting and, based on

the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast

significant doubt on the association’s ability to continue as a going concern. If we conclude that a material

uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor’s report to the related disclosures in the

financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the

audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor’s report. However, future events or conditions may cause the

association to cease to continue as a going concern.

Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including the disclosures, and

whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair

presentation.

We communicate with the committee regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and

significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.

Obtain sufficient appropriate audit evidence regarding the financial information of the entities or business activities

within the association to express an opinion on the financial report. We are responsible for the direction,

supervision and performance of the audit. We remain solely responsible for our audit opinion.
