The Leadership Program: Fulfilling Promises and

Exceeding Expectations

This term, the leadership program has worked hard to maintain a good vibe and strong community feel throughout the school. At the start of the term, Rockingham Senior High School officially partnered with Make a Wish Foundation. The leadership program took full advantage of this commitment and had their very first Heroes vs Villains Day on May 23. Each student was able to come to school dressed as their favourite superhero or villain. Gold coin donations were collected and over $600 was raised. After the success of the day, the student leaders are still trying come up with more fun and original ideas to help raise money for charities. A main aim for the Senior School Leaders this year is to fulfil their promise to the Year 12‘s and open up a Year 12 Common Room. Already a room has been allocated, a fridge, microwave, toaster and sandwich press have been donated and hopefully the space can be opened just before the end of term. We feel as if we are achieving our goals and exceeding expectations this year as the leadership group of the school and definitely fulfilling our other main aim: raising the responsibility and profile of a Rockingham Senior High School Student Leader. Ashlea Tunbridge and Heather Edmonds, Year 12 Student Leaders.

Rockingham Senior High School would like to introduce the newest member to our thriving Student Services team, our Chaplain Charmaine. My name is Charmaine and I have been appointed the role of Chaplain at Rockingham Senior High School. I work Monday through to Friday and I am located in the Student Services Office. I will at times be helping with some general duties like Breakfast Club. However, my role is mostly to provide individual pastoral care support and to conduct general group work activities. I am looking forward to working with the students and supporting them in their journey wherever possible. Buddy Zone At Rockingham Senior High School we value the development of positive relationships between all school community members and the ‗Buddy Zone‘ provides the perfect space to allow staff and students to connect outside the classroom. At recess and lunch, the ‗Buddy Zone‘ will be available for all students to access to have informal chats with a variety of staff members present in the area. The Buddy Bench is located outside of Student Services. All students are encouraged to use the Buddy Zone as an opportunity to touch base with staff for advice, guidance, or simply to just have a casual chat about how things are going.

Senior School ‘Winter Wonderland’

Ball

On Friday June 17, the Fremantle Sailing Club was transformed into a ‗Winter Wonderland‘ for the 2016 Senior School Ball. Students ascended the grand stairway and were almost unrecognisable in their glamorous attire. Our students really ‗let it go‘ and most of the night was spent on the dance floor. The same can be said for most of the teachers! The behaviour of students throughout the night was exemplary and they should be commended on the excellent way they represented their school. Students and teachers voted on different prize categories and the winners were as follows: King – Ashlea Tunbridge Queen – Heather Emonds Prince – Reni Rata Princess – Faith Moeke Best Couple – Shanaya Fairey & Brock Clark Best Dancer – Aniheta Te Rangi Best Dressed (male) – Cameron Perrett Best Dressed (female) – Bree Dickson

A huge thank you to the ball committee for helping to organise the night and to the staff who attended. Looking forward to next year!.

Term 1 is when the Student Services team holds our annual Friendship Week. The week focuses on up-skilling students about all aspects of bullying. We enjoyed teambuilding activities including a day of Minute To Win It Games, a powerful cyber safety presentation, writing Warm Fuzzies to our classmates, the spectacular feast of 1000 cupcakes provided by staff (as an act of kindness) to our wonderful students as well as other in class activities and recess and lunch activities. This year our Year 12 Student Leaders were a visible presence throughout the week and also spoke over the PA every morning about what bullying is, how we should deal with it and importantly, how we must all be up-standers, not by-standers when we see this happening. The Student Leaders also organised a Clean Up RSHS day as a way of teaching students about the importance of giving back to our community.

During Term 2, the Student Services team facilitated a Careers Week. We focused on our Year 10‘s and Senior School students and invited them to attend a Careers Expo at the school. We were fortunate to have representatives from Murdoch Uni, Curtin Uni, Edith Cowan Uni, Challenger TAFE, AMA Apprenticeships and Traineeships and Strategix. We also had students complete a day of bricklaying as part of the Try a Trade initiative. Over 30 students also attended an interactive Disability Services workshop. All Year 10 students also attended a two hour workshop focusing on job hunting and interview techniques. Overall, it was a very successful week and we intend to build on this next year and provide further opportunities for students to explore various pathways.

Octagon

Congratulations to all the students involved in the Octagon performance. This was a part of the South of the Swan Dance Festival that was held at UWA at 7:30 pm on Wednesday June 22. The Year 9-12 Dance students showcased their hard work and performed choreography to over 200 people. For some, this was their first performance in front of a live audience. We have had lots of positive feedback from audience members who attended the event, commenting on the showmanship of the students. I would like to thank all students involved for their hard work and dedication over the term in preparation for this event. The performance was very entertaining and they should be proud of their achievements. A big thank you to the staff that helped on the night, you contributed to the overall success of the show. A huge thank you to Di Nicholls and Kim Kow for making the dance costumes look amazing.

We look forward to the Pulse performance in Term 4 this year . - Ms Kirsty Richards, Dance Teacher Sydney Dance Company visit Students were treated to a lesson led by Sydney Dance Company Members in Week 8. The lessons were run by two dancers from the Sydney company. It was a great learning opportunity for the students involved to learn from professional dance artists that are part of an Australian based company.

The Kwinana Industries Council (KIC), iMEN Project is a program that provides Year 10 male students with the opportunity to explore and understand the breadth of industry in the Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) and the broad range of career options available. It highlights the commitment Kwinana industry has to engaging students in the workforce and provides an opportunity for students to see what industry really looks like. As part of a group of 32 students, they identify the employment and career pathways in this significant industrial region of Western Australia. Over 6 days in Term 2 through a variety of off campus activities, students visit a range of industries in the KIA, meet current employees in a range of roles and have the opportunity to reflect on their possible future involvement in the local workforce. The program provides students with an opportunity to work together and share experiences. They participate in workshops including: Social Media; preparation of a resume; mock interviews; developing journals; group activities and presentations. For further information contact Debbie Hoey, KIC Education Development Officer. [email protected]

During Semester 1, three of our Yr 10 students, Catherine Saunders, Jasmine Hewat-Lawrence and Kyler Kissell participated in the Kwinana Industries Council iWomen Project. The project provided the girls with the opportunity to explore and understand the breadth of industry in the Kwinana industrial Area and the broad range of career options available. Over six days the girls visited several work sites, met current employees in a range of roles and explored different career pathways. Each year scholarships are awarded to three students to recognise their outstanding contribution to the program. This year one of Rockingham SHS‘s students, Jasmine Hewat-Lawrence, was awarded a KIC Leeuwin Scholarship. She will be enjoying a week long adventure on the SS Leeuwin around the West Australian coastline. Congratulations to all the girls on their participation.

On the 20 May Rockingham Senior High School held its very first Heroes vs Villains Day as a fundraiser for the Make a Wish Foundation. Students and teachers came to school dressed up as their favorite hero or villain. Costumes ranged from Where‘s Wally to Batman with everything in-between. The school raised over $600 for the cause. Miss Panikoula and her Ball Committee held a sausage sizzle on the day and raised over $500 going towards the Year 12 Ball. A huge thank you to the Student Leaders for organising the day and to the Business Course Students for collecting the gold coin donation and helping with the sausage sizzle. Another shout out must be made to Mr Grebert in the Library for setting up a huge display to help advertise the event. Overall the day was a massive success and hopefully acts as a kick starter for future events, which can continue to make school exciting and raise money for the Make a Wish Foundation. This poses exciting prospects for these young men‘s futures and potentially playing on the highest stage. Huge congratulations must also be extended to all of the students who not only made representative teams this term, but also the huge amount who trialled bravely for the range of teams. Getting a knock back now is not the end but will give you more focus on what to do next time if you set your goals right, and work towards them the way I know you can. Overall I couldn‘t be prouder of all of my Rugby boys this semester and hope they can keep up the amazing work after the holidays. Good luck guys, keep it up. -Isaac Thomas, Rugby Coach Along with the many students selected for a State team this year our Rugby League teacher Mr Isaac Thomas was selected for the Combined Affiliated States Australian Team (CAS) and is off to Fiji to represent his country in Term 3. A huge congratulations on this well deserved achievement.

Term 2 has been an exciting term for the Rugby League program with many successes and improvements shown across all year groups. The Year 7‘s are progressing really well, and even though their amount of competitive games has been limited, they remain undefeated in the Specialist Schools Cup so far. Given that so many of the boys have never played Rugby League before, this is an outstanding effort and is to be commended. Our Year 8‘s are in the middle of an exciting ―Technology in League‖ assignment where they analyse a skill, break down its parts and video how it is performed. We are all looking forward to the end product and hopefully being able to use these amazing resources to help teach incoming future Year 7‘s to the program. The Year 9‘s are training hard in preparation for their Term 3 and 4 Specialist Schools competition, honing their skills and learning finally how to play as a team. Many of these Year 9‘s have also been successfully stepping up to play for the Year 10 team and are not disappointing anyone with their outstanding efforts. Lastly, our Year 10‘s are sitting on top of the ladder in the Specialist Schools competition being played all over Perth, versing an arrangement of talented high schools. Showing improvement with every game, these boys are setting a standard of being tough defensively and scoring points from anywhere on the field. Most impressive for me is how they are conducting themselves in a competitive yet fair, humble manner, with many teachers and coaches from other schools commenting on how they carry themselves so professionally. 2016 has also thus far been a successful year with many of our students making state teams this term, including a few upper school and ex RSHS League graduates. To top it off Curtis Dansey-Smaller (Year 12) has been selected to play for the Combined Affiliated States Australian Team and Yuri Taipeti (Year 10) was selected in the Under 15‘s New Zealand Maori Rugby League team. That‘s amazing guys, well done!. We also have no fewer than 6 ex- Rugby League graduates playing in the Eastern States in NRL feeder teams in Under 18‘s and Under 20‘s for a range of clubs, including Burleigh Bears, Canberra Raiders, Cronulla Sharks and Newcastle Knights.

Stories from War at Sea the Navy in WW1

The experience of Australian sailors in World War I has

largely been overshadowed by the stories of soldiers on

the Western Front or at Gallipoli. This panel exhibition

located in the library draws on the personal accounts of

Navy servicemen through their diaries, mementoes,

ship‘s logs and letters home to tell their incredible

stories of bravery and sacrifice amidst the drudgery of

life at sea, patrolling, blockading and escorting

Year 11 Generals Metal Class

The students of the Year 11 General Metals class have been busy over the past term building a variety of structures using metalwork skills developed over the past and current year under the guidance of teacher Mr Thomas Adams. Some of these structures include a custom designed fire pit, a skateboard jump, garden and camping implements. Of particular interest to students, particularly those who are scooter mobile, is the fabrication of a helmet rack for placement in the student bike parking area. Initially this will have lock up hooks (with students using their own padlock) for at least 6 helmets, with provision for more if and when needed. The aim is to have a small roof cover to protect helmets from the elements. - Mr Phil Hays, HOLA Design and Technology.

The Year 9 and Year 10 classes in Media Studies have been getting involved in the Rockingham Act Belong Commit Program. Supported by The City of Rockingham, Heathway and local business Photocoffee, students have been completing workshops with Jessica Sankey (City of Rockingham), Stuart Shepherd (Director of Photography and Screen Writer at One Universe Studios), student Photographer Will Creed from Esperance Senior High School, Kinglsey Klau from Photocoffee and his dog Nikon. Focusing on the theme of staying mentally healthy, students have been working to produce competitive art works consisting of Short Films and Photography to enter into the competition. Finalists will have their work exhibited for three weeks at the Gary Holland Community Centre, on the Rockingham Waterfront Village. - Mrs Tegan Gough, Media Teacher Photos by Mr Kinglsey Klau
