BRIDGES other A S E A N c o u n t r i e s to b u i l d f u r t h e r b r i d g e s towards peace and i n t e r n a t i o n a l u n d e r s t a n d i n g by expanding its program to stimulate the i n t e l l e c t u a l , s c i e n t i f i c a n d cultural exchange i n t he region. The next A S E A N " B r i d g e s " series will therefore continu- ously take place mainly in Indonesia as well as i n the Philip- pines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam from January to March 2017, c o m p r i s i n g e v e n t s with Nobel Laureates from all fields. The Nobel Laureates will visit the region n o t a l l at once, but separately to conduct public lectures, seminars, workshops a n d d i a l o g u e s hosted by l o c a l i n s t i t u t i o n s d u r i n g a c o n t i n u e d p e r i o d of three months. The topics of the ongoing events will deal with the overall theme of "building a culture of peace and development in a globalized world" and with a w i d e r a n g e of issues i n t h e fields of politics, economy, science, c u l t u r e a n d t h e m e d i a . T h e y will especially highlight the challenges of both globalization and regionalism and its im- pact on development and international cooperation. The aim of "Bridges" is to facilitate and strengthen dialogue and communication between societies i n S o u t h e a s t Asia with their multiple cul- t u r e s a n d faiths as well as with peoples in other parts of the world to pro- mote understanding and trust. The events aim at building bridges t h r o u g h N o b e l Laureates with l o c a l u n i v e r s i - ties and other institutions in Southeast Asia to establish long- term relationships resulting in common research programs and other forms of collaboration. By enhancing science, tech- nology a n d e d u c a t i o n as a basis for peace a n d d e v e l o p t n e n t the e v e n t s m a y l e a d to a b e t t e r c o o p e r a t i o n f o r t h e a d v a n c e m e n t of peace, freedom and security i n t h e region with the active in- volvement o f t h e y o u t i g g e n e r a t i o n , A S E A N s key to t h e f u t u r e .
