Wilson Broadcasting will flip XSUR-AM/San Diego to Country on Oct. 28. XSUR – 540 AM and licensed to Tijuana, Mexico – currently simulcasts Adult Standards with the company’s KKGO-AM// Los Angeles. The station will also be streaming on the web at www.540Country.com and will soon be available on HD radio. Programming will be a mix of live & local and the Mainstream Country format of Dial Global, which already features a number of personalities who were on KZLA including Brian Douglas, Whitney Allen and Paul Freeman. They’ll do mornings, afternoons and evenings, respectively, and will also offer customized local segments for XSUR. Mt. Wilson’s GSM Kane Biscaya told Country Aircheck that plans are for the station to be live & local on the weekends, with other dayparts going live as advertiser and listener support warrants. Biscaya described XSUR’s coverage as serving much of LA, saying it puts “a phenomenal signal” up the California coast and into Orange and Los Angeles counties. He added that Arbitron diary research of KZLA listeners showed large amounts of listening came from southern LA County and Orange County. Emmis dropped Country from KZLA in mid-August for Rhythmic AC. Mt. Wilson’s KKGO – 1260 AM ƒ will not be joining XSUR in a Country simulcast – at least not right away. Biscaya notes the company has about six months of client and talent commitments that preclude its immediate conversion to Country. While it’s Hot Air at this point, don’t be too surprised if KKGO – which covers the north part of LA including the Valley – joins XSUR in Country at some point in the future. Calling all stars: XSUR is looking for artists to go on the air welcoming Country back to LA. Dial Global’s Country MD Bob Blackburn is coordinating these efforts.
