The basic program or ‘A’ disc, is common to all packages and is required for the program to run and also includes parts information. Other modules are then added to enhance the capabilities of the program. For the purposes of diagnostics, the two most popular packages are known as SD/SIS and Diagnostic Master Package. Both are available on one year or three year subscription packages.

SD/SIS Comprises ECU Diagnosis (SD) and Trouble Shooting Instructions (SIS)

SD - Covers fault code readout, erase error memory, actual values, actuators, service interval resetting etc.

SIS - Has additional troubleshooting information, to enable the user to determine faults with troubleshooting tabs showing instructions for a specific fault code, electrical terminal diagrams, detailed component information, test procedures etc.

In addition to this, the Diagnostic Master Package also includes Mechanical Service Information (M), Body Electrical Wiring Diagrams (P) and Technical Service Bulletins (TSB)

M - Provides cross manufacturer vehicle information for data such as inspection and maintenance plans, technical vehicle data, wheel alignment, tyre pressure tables, removal and installation of toothed belts and service interval resets.

P - Contains manufacturer circuit diagrams for vehicle electrical systems and comfort and convenience electrics represented in a standardised format with zoom and printout functions.

TSB - Technical Service Bulletins give quick access to known vehicle faults, showing a clear description of cause, assignment of symptoms and tested repair tips.

TURN ON YOUR EXHAUST ANALYSER – IT’S A GAS! Diagnostic Scan tools report the data they are provided with, but there are still occasions when the best tool for the job is an exhaust gas analyser.

We deal with lots of technical phone calls in a week, most of them driveability issues of some sort. In some cases technicians have an equipment problem: They need access to a PID (Parameter ID) their scanner doesn’t report or they want to do a bidirectional test but don’t have the right software interface to command it. Sometimes we can help them find a viable work-around, sometimes we can’t.

Ultimately, what we do on a daily basis, what these phone calls are all about is science. We gather data, formulate ideas and seek to verify or disprove our theory. In pursuing this endeavour we use many scientific tools, ranging from multimeters and scopes to vacuum gauges and scanners. A good exhaust gas analyser should have a place in your diagnostic line-up as well. If you have one and aren’t using it, you may want to dust it off and perhaps your skills with it as well. If you don’t have one, this article will give you a taste of how it could make life easier. Here are a few helpful things to remember: • Not all driveability complaints result in a ‘MIL On’ condition, a code or even a pending code.

• Not all DTCs or illuminated MIL’s are accompanied by noticeable driveability symptoms.

• The information in data stream is only as good as the sensors supplying it and the software interpreting it.

So does that mean you should ignore MIL status, DTCs and data stream? Of course not! These are certainly all front-line tools in our daily work, and we wouldn’t want to be without them if we could avoid it.

All five exhaust gasses usually measured, especially O2 and CO2, are excellent troubleshooting tools. Use of an exhaust gas analyser will allow you to narrow down the potential cause of driveability and emissions concerns, focus your troubleshooting tests in the area(s) most likely to be causing the concern and save diagnostic time. In addition to this, gas analysis also gives you the ability to measure the effectiveness of repairs by comparing before and after exhaust readings. In troubleshooting, always remember the combustion chemistry equation: Fuel (hydrogen, carbon, sulphur) + Air (nitrogen, oxygen) = Carbon dioxide + water vapour + oxygen + carbon monoxide + hydrocarbon + oxides of nitrogen + sulphur oxides.

1. The amount of oxygen present determines what emissions the fuel will produce when burned

2. As we approach perfect combustion the increased temperature causes additional pollutants to start forming

3. We can never achieve perfect combustion inside the engine

4. An air/fuel mixture of 14.64.1 is the best compromise, but it does not provide perfect combustion

5. A 14:64.1 mixture gives the lowest Co and HC levels but it produces very high NOx levels

6. A 14:64.1 mixture also results in low oxygen levels

For those of you looking to upgrade your MOT bay to ‘One Person’ testing we can supply our new ‘Quadra Compact’ One Person Test Lane lift (Part Number SF/9259). This lift can be installed into most existing floor recesses. As part of the service we provide we will visit your garage, survey your existing MOT installation, give you the best advice on a replacement lift and can prepare drawings for DVSA submission if required – it’s all part of the service.

For anyone looking to replace an existing MOT lift (Tecalemit or any other make) we have now introduced a ‘retro-fit’ Quadra MOT lift (Part No: SF/9006). Once again this is a slightly narrower

and shallower lift which we’ve designed to fit into the majority of existing floor recesses.

It has some great features – such as blue tooth communication as standard and a patented diesel smoke meter (used by DVSA).
