What is Diabetes?
• Metabolic disease
• Impaired Glucose management
• Caused by:
• Inadequate insulin production
• Body’s cells do not respond to insulin
• Main symptoms: lethargy, blurred vision, weight loss, nausea, vomiting, glycosuria

Major Complications of Diabetes
• Between 2005-2008, 67% of diabetics had blood pressure greater than 140/90 mmHg
• Diabetes is leading cause of kidney failure
• More than 60% of lower limb amputations occur in people with diabetes
• About 60% to 70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe form of nervous system damage
